Subject: RE: Obit: Tony McCauley From: Little Robyn Date: 10 Jun 03 - 07:15 PM Found this in the Folk DJ: Many references today to Tony McAuley, singer, broadcaster and BBC TV = producer of many seminal Folk and Traditional programmes since the late = 60s. Tony sadly succumbed to cancer yesterday (Saturday) but the BBC = last night decided to transmit his final "Folk Club" radio programme, = pre-recorded just a few days ago. Tony played a very big part in the = early career development of Clannad, Enya, Paul Brady, Mary Black, The = Sands Family, de Dannan and countless others. A huge loss to the Irish = music scene. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Tony McCauley From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 11 Jun 03 - 01:35 AM Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. I knew Tony when I first got into folk music in Belfast in the '60's. A wonderful singer, collector and teacher. I was in Rostrevor Festival last year when Tommy Sands honored him with a "Hall of Fame" sort of award. It was a truly great night with Seamus Heaney (who went to Queen's University with Tony) and the legendary David Hammond participating in the craic. Tony sang and played a few songs himself, and a fine night was had by all. He'll be sorely missed. Thanks, Tony for starting me off, and my sincerest condolences to his family. Seamus Kennedy |
Subject: RE: Obit: Tony McCauley From: Aidan Crossey Date: 11 Jun 03 - 05:19 AM The debt owed by the folk and trad community to Tony is incalculable. My da had the honour of being personally acquainted with Tony back in the 60s/70s and he always spoke very highly of Tony's warmth and generosity (not to mention his unerring musical radar). A keeper of the flame, if ever there was one! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Tony McCauley From: Big Tim Date: 12 Jun 03 - 01:46 AM I had never heard of Tony until recently, but was scheduled to meet him at the West Belfast Festival in August, of which he was,I understand, one of the organisers. Sadly that won't happen now. I believe that his funeral was in Cushendall, in the Green Glens of Antrim. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Tony McCauley From: GUEST,Frank Kennedy Date: 12 Jun 03 - 12:33 PM Tony was a genuine source of great encouragement for all musicians who were fortunate enough to cross his path. Since living "abroad" in the US I only rarely had the opportunity to meet him but my visits to Belfast and the Glens will be the poorer knowing that he is gone. I hope the BBC and Sands brothers will continue the Folk Club show in his memory. As my old school chum Seamus says in this thread, he will be sorely missed indeed. Condolences to the McCauley family Frank Kennedy |
