Subject: Obit: The death of Tony McCauley From: ard mhacha Date: 17 Jun 03 - 07:51 AM Tony McCauley folk singer and broadcaster passed away on June 7th, Tony`s contribution to Irish folk musuc was legend, his BBC programmes in the early 1970s introduced numerous young performers. Enya, Paul Brady and a host of other figures in the Irish folk scene took their first steps to stardom on Tony`s BBC NI Programme "As I roved out" . I heard Tony sing "General Munro" some thirty years ago in a folk club in Portadown, he also sang his favourite song that night "Slieve Gallon Braes" and rarely have I ever heard those two great songs sung with the same feeling. A few weeks before his death Tony was given a Lfe Time award for his contribution to folk music, presented by Seamus Heaney with a host of folk musicans including David Hammond and Tommy Sands. A sad loss to all in the folk music scene. Ard Mhacha. |
