Subject: LYR REQ: Today's Monday..Roast Beef, Is Every
From: John in Brisbane
Date: 13 Aug 98 - 10:12 PM

Today's Monday, Today we have Roast Beef, Is Everybody happy. You bet your life we are.

Today's Tuesday. Today is washing day. Is Everybody happy. You bet your life we are.

Apparently this song is of English background, and is delivered as an expressionless monotone.

Any clues please?

Regards John

A pretty accurate song for me at the time although the days the meals were served on were different. For us as kids Wednesday was stew, Friday was pay day and Saturday was shepherds pie. It meant my mum could keep us all fed on very limited income. Monday was indeed washing day and Sunday church. I liked the Scaffold, from memory they consisted of Mike McGear (who was actually Paul McCartney's brother, Roger McGough, one of the Liverpool poets and John Gorman. Some of the stuff on their albums was very funny. i remember John Gorman doing a garbled sermon as an Irish priest which was hilarious. The only bit I can remember was "So Jesus went first. Then Jesus went second. Then Jesus went third. Then Jesus went forth along the road to Galilee...

I know this song. Eric Carle does a version but they have to change one of the lyrics. Originally, it was "church on Sunday" but maybe because of "political correctness" they had to change it to "ice cream on Sunday."

Eric Carl's a fabulous illustrator. Took the "board book" edition to the little ones on the coast--they were then one and four. The book includes the music as well. Grandpa was tickled to hear the four-year-old read it … I are rather fond of songs that can be mnemonic, if you will. Fun to do them in second [3rd,4th] language(s) after kids have learnt the song. This wee rant, well, it's a song for KIDS, right? Music is insanely helpful to memory (preachin' @ the choir here). Since today IS Monday, I'll wish all you 'catters well, and

keep on pickin'

Methinks 'tis somewhat older than Scaffold! My father, and several of his contemporaries from different locations and different forces, and who had never met each other, all had the song. I think it was in general circulation in the forces (certainly Army and RAF) during WW2. Solid information/evidence on origins would be most welcome.
