I am looking for the words for this old (70's) song by the pianist Frank Mills. It's the story about a guy coming across an organ grinder who sang the chorus and returned a few years later to find he died "one cold November day".

The chorus goes "If you love me, love me, love why did you ever leave me girl" repeated 2 or 4 times. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you say 1970's, Ron? I'm afraid my clock stopped in 1970, when Uncle Sam got me and sent me over to preserve Berlin from Communism. By the time I got back, I was stuck listening to whatever music my children listened to. Now, if it was 1870's, you might have a chance.....

Thanks Joe. Actually I was trying to avoid buying the CD, but I guess I'll have to. When I get the lyrics, they will be posted.

Well Joe, I found the lyrics in a Frank Mills songbook, and as promised, here they are.

LOVE ME, LOVE ME, LOVE
(Frank Mills)

Standing on a corner, passing time away,
I thought I heard an organ grinder singing as he played.
He had a little monkey with a little cup of tin
And he danced for joy when someone put a penny in.

(CHORUS) He sang, "Love me, love me, love, why did you ever leave me, girl?
If you love me, love me, love, why did you ever go?
If you love me, love me, love, why did you ever leave me, girl?
If you love me, love me, love, why did you ever go?

I couldn't help but wonder how the old man got his song,
What a tragic tale of loneliness, how fate had done him wrong,
Whatever made the old man want to brave the cold and rain,
And tell the world his story till death could ease the pain. (CHORUS)

I went back to the corner just to hear the old man play.
A policeman said the old man died one cold November day.
I waited for a minute, then sadly walked away.
Though I couldn't see the old man, I'm sure I heard him play. (CHORUS)
