King Herod's cock was dead?

I've always enjoyed "The Body In the Bag", perhaps because the cat isn't really dead.
"The Boar's Head Carol" would work for Christmas. So, I suppose would, "King Herod and the Cock".

The Wolfhound (DT or Mudcat Songbook)

Dead Dog Cider from Charley Noble-- maybe someone has a link to this sound file to offer?

Puff the Magic Dragon, if you add a verse. :~) Go ahead. You know you want to.

Subject: Lyr Add: TOWSER JENKINS
From: Bill D
Date: 04 Jul 03 - 04:39 PM

"...Once I had a yaller dog, his name was Towser Jenkins.
The butcher cut his tail off with a cleaver...
Towser had his trademark on every cat in town,
And when he spotted one, he'd never leave her.

He wore his legs off stumpy, chasin' milk carts 'round the country.
Had bunions on his knees from jumpin' ditches.
Had all the hair wore off his ribs
From chasin' cats around the corn cribs...
But empty is the doghouse, Towsers poisoned.

No more he'll look for liver down beside the Suwanee River,
No more will boys baptize him in the sewer..
No more homeward will he wail, with ten cans tied to his tail..
For empty is the doghouse...Towser's poisoned."

...from a Folk Legacy album by Harry Tufts. (I hope that right!)

There's an old country song called "Old Shep" that's about a faithful hunting dog going off to its final reward. I'm not sure of the original author, but it was covered by a lot of Nashville stars in the 50s and 60s.

I'm Looking Over My Dead Dog Rover.
The Unicorn Song (Shel Silverstein)
Puff The Magic Dragon (can be interpreted that way)

There's more too - I know there was a thread about this sometime.

Oh, hey, there are a number of dead animal songs on the "D" page of the Digital Tradition. Dead Dog Scrumpy is particularly inspiring. Emma, do you happen to have the lyrics to "I Put My Dog in the Microwave"?

Subject: Lyr Add: DEAD PUPPIES
From: JennyO
Date: 04 Jul 03 - 12:33 PM

Here you go, from the Digitrad + a verse that my friend Rhymin' Simon sings - I think there are other verses around too:

DEAD PUPPIES

D....A........Bm....F#m
////-////-----////-////
Dead puppies, dead puppies

G....A.......Bm....F#m
////-////----////-////
Dead puppies aren't much fun.

Verses: They don't come, when you call
They don't chase no squirrels at all
Dead puppies aren't much fun

Mom said puppies' days are through
Then she chunked him in the stew
Dead puppies aren't much fun

Puppy died late last fall
He's still rotting in the hall
Dead puppies aren't much fun

////=one measure in 4/4...again, the verse and chorus
are the same (musically)

Here's Simon's verse, which he sings first:

When you pick them up they sag
When you go for walks they drag
Dead puppies aren't much fun.

Jenny

It's been an awful long time since I heard a dead animal sing; must be why I can't remember any titles! :~)

A friend of mine, Jim Jarratt, wrote one called Squashed Hedgehogs, about trips out in the car with young children.

He also is responsible for one of ghost stories: Brigantian Whispers

Quack!

Any other goodies to add? (With where I can find them?)
