Even the people you have not heard of are superb singers.

The atmosphere in the singarounds has been electric the previous two years.

You can also talk about singing all weekend if you wish. There will always be a listener :0)

What a great idea ! Have similar events been held before ? What would be the timetable of events ? I don't think I can make it but I would like to know for future reference.

Hi Karen,

Yes, this is the third annual event.

Originally, the Salford Working Men's Library invited Kirsty MacColl to unveil a plaque to the memory of Ewan's work. Tragically, she was killed in a boating accident before this could be fulfilled.

The event was postponed, and later Peggy Seeger agreed to perform the unveiling.

The workshops explore the singers techniques to improve their performance and explore how the traditional material influenced Ewan's, and others' work in the 'Critics Group'.

I will leave to others to relate their impressions and experiences ...

It should be Donal Maguire. I'm not being picky but Donal hates being misspeled. Check out his site at www.donalmaguire.co.uk/. Great singer and loves a good discussion.
       cheers

It should be Dónal Maguire, if you were being picky.

Dónal and all those other wonderful singers gathered together in one place in one weekend- amazing singing, stimulating discussion of the songs, their history, singing styles- and above all, lovely, friendly people!

Yes, I will definitely be there.

(Another thread mentions Dónal at the moment; Dónal Maguire in Wash DC area- good man yerself!)

Auldtimer, I think that you'd really enjoy this event provided you are prepared to overlook some orthographic irregularities!

Last year's event was a revelation to me. There I found a few dedicated singers who love to sing old ballads and songs in a powerful and direct style that makes them fresh and immediate. What is more the people who attend are great company as well, and the whole weekend, as Noreen says, is stimulating and inspiring.
Ewan's memory was respected, not because people remembered him as a "saint" (in fact there were a few quite critical things said about him - which he may well have deserved) but because those of us who gathered there relished the sheer power of the singing voice to communicate intense emotions. There isn't a much greater tribute any of us can pay to his memory than to say "He made me want to sing."

Be there, or else...

Thanks Auldtimer for the correction.

The fault was purely mine in transcribing Dónal Maguire's name from the programme.

Guest Matthew Edwards. I will be in the company of Donal Maguire (sorry I don't know how to do the thingy),Bob Blair, Alison McMorland, Geordie McIntyre and a hatfull of other fine singers and players at Common Ground Scotland Festival at Auchincruive Colledge in Ayrshire the first week in August. www.commongroundscotland.com/ As to Ewan MacColl, I still treasure the memories of two nights in The Kilmarnock Folk club. He was spellbinding. Shure, some smoke and mirrors was involved but, big songs, big performance.
Cheers

I'd love to go but unfortunately I will be working - it's Heritage Open Days 12th - 15th September and I've got a load of guided walks, property openings and early music groups to look after. Why is it always Feast or Famine when it comes to finding events I want to go to...

It is meant to be an annual event, so perhaps you can start organising your commitments for next year! :0)

I'd love to, 8 Pints, unfortunately my commitments, well some of them anyway, are decided by others...in this case the Civic Trust (it's a national thing...) And I'm one of those few fortunates whose work is also their hobby so I guess I can't complain too much!

Mary - There were less people than expected but the extra intimacy created produced extended spells of absolutely superb singing.

We had a Rusholme Curry for ten early Sunday evening and discussed 2004!!

I did 4 long paras which were deleted in cyberspace - Will recreate tomorrow.

I have not been able to get to this weekend for some years and always like to know how things are going. If I lived locally I would have been there!

My head is hurting Mary :0)

When I did the original it just poured out. Head now nearly empty.

Will chat with a few of the attendees who will be at Otley and try again. I missed most of Saturday because of uncancellable prior arrangement so will get comments to incorporate for Saturday section. As if I haven't done enough report writing in my life!!
