Subject: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 14 Jul 03 - 10:13 AM To anybody in striking distance of Hertford. We've arranged a folk singaround at The Woodman in Chapmore End for 22nd July, starting at about 8.30. Singers and musicians welcome. I'd love to meet some more mudcatters so, if you can, come along! If this one does well we're hoping to make it a regular event. Chapmore End is just off the B158 between Bengeo and Wadesmill and the pub is signposted from the B158. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 15 Jul 03 - 09:15 AM The Woodman is a timewarp old country pub, with a large garden and good Green King beer. Outside is a pretty Green and duck pond. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: IanC Date: 15 Jul 03 - 09:21 AM Been the venue for quite a few sessions etc. for quite a long time too. This is the last of a long series BTW Hilary, are you suggesting that instruments are banned? Is it just a singaround? :-) |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Dave Bryant Date: 15 Jul 03 - 09:33 AM Linda and I have sung in "The Woodman" on a couple of occasions. They used to have a mini Folk Festival there at one time. Linda and I will try and get there, next week. Perhaps McGrath and a few of the Harlow brigade will also be able to make it. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: IanC Date: 15 Jul 03 - 09:48 AM Sorry Jacqui ... don't know what made me think it was Hilary (My Guru...) who started the thread. :-( |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 15 Jul 03 - 10:36 AM Guitars are definitely welcome Ian, it might help me stay in tune when I sing!!!!! No probs with the mistake there - an easy one to make. It will be great to see you all - I'm really looking forward to it. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Lanfranc Date: 15 Jul 03 - 07:13 PM I remember the Woodman, Chapmore End mini festival(s). Even played there! Will try to get along Alan |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Dave Bryant Date: 16 Jul 03 - 10:25 AM The last time that Linda and I were at the Woodman, there was a rather amusing fracas between a lady and a young man, which culminated in her throwing a drink over him and he removing ALL his clothes. It was a good job that the pub was over the border in Herts, if it had been the other side of the River Stort in Essex, with all those Essex Girls (I kept Linda under control) it could have caused a riot ! |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 17 Jul 03 - 03:32 AM Well, if we get bored on Tuesday maybe we can find some volunteers to liven up the session! What is it with Essex girls, anyway? And why does Essex have that reputation? It almost seems like the Home Counties version of the Irish in some ways, but with slightly different behaviour. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Dave Bryant Date: 17 Jul 03 - 04:41 AM My partner Linda uses "Essex Girl" as her mudcat name, so perhaps I'm chancing my luck. What does an Essex Girl put behind her ears to attract men ? - her ankles. How does an Essex Girl turn on the light after sex ? - she opens the car door. How do you know when an Essex Girl has an orgasm ? - she drops her chips. An Essex Girl asks her boyfriend to kiss her in "that special place which is is all damp and smelly". "Sod that", he says, "I'm not going to drive all the way to Canvey Island at this time of night !" My favorite doesn't work so well written down, because it relies on a pun. What is an Essex Girl's usual w(h)ine ? - "I want to go shopping at Lakeside". |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 18 Jul 03 - 03:35 AM Dave Your lady must have one good sense of humour - or you've got a lot of bruises! |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: GUEST,Lanfranc at the orifice Date: 18 Jul 03 - 04:38 AM In the same way that Irish jokes are similar to Polish jokes are similar to Ostfriesland jokes etc, "Essex girl" jokes are almost indistinguishable from "blonde" jokes. As a denizen of Essex for most of my life, I protest that these so-called jokes are an unwarranted slur on the flower of East Saxon maidenhood. Essex is the second-largest county in England, and suffers from its proximity to London. It is at the London side of the county (Ilford, Romford, Chigwell and environs) that the fabled white stilettos, pink tracksuits and gold medallions are to be found, if at all. By the time you get to Brentwood, less than a third of the way across the county, they are very seldom seen. Even in Harlow, where Kevin McGrath and I have the honour to reside, the influence of the great wen is beginning to fade. Essex is a great County, and no Kentish Man or Man of Kent should be allowed to impugn it - especially not if his hame is Bryant!!! Watch your step if you come through Essex to Chapmore End, Dave!! I'd go round via Hatfield if I were you! (My wife and daughters said I had to write this) Alan |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Dave Bryant Date: 18 Jul 03 - 05:09 AM Alan, most "Blonde" jokes revolve around the idea that these ladies are rather dumb. In most "Essex Girl" jokes they are anything but dumb - just randy. In fact it is often the "Essex Lads" who are portrayed as being rather thick (or not very with it) as in the penultimate joke that I posted, or the one about the Essex Lads who were rather pissed off after driving all the way up the A12 to find that the Norfolk Broads were only a series of lakes and rivers. I have known (biblically) several lady from said county, including of course my current partner, none of whom has shown the slightest sign of prudery, frigidity, or lack of libido. Surely this is is a compliment (at least from the male point of view). |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 18 Jul 03 - 07:49 AM I must admit that, being North London born and bred (PLEASE don't hold that against me!) my early experiences of Essex were of Southend on Sea for the main part and that really did fit the bill. Who remembers the glory days of the Kursall? Once I had escaped from the Smoke and moved out to rural Hertford I was quite surprised to find out what beautiful places there were in Essex, in particular to the north of the county, and for an old fashioned seaside day what can beat Walton on the Naze? I've even met some very nice people who live in Essex. Mind you, Tescos in Harlow at a weekend can sometimes reinforce the legend! However, the Essex girl jokes are good, and do fit quite a number of non-Essex females I know, particularly the Lakeside one! |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: The Barden of England Date: 18 Jul 03 - 08:13 AM Dave Bryant - Man of Kent or Kentish Man? Whichever way Dave those guys in Essex are only jealous 'cause we have proper hills in Kent, although on saying that we lot from south of the North Downs reckon that North of the North Downs - say the Medway Towns etc, are almost honorary Essex!! And Kelly Brook is from Rochester - say no more!!! |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Snuffy Date: 18 Jul 03 - 08:31 AM Essex people are really strange - half East Anglian and half human |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Billy Suggers Date: 18 Jul 03 - 08:50 AM I resent that. O'm frum Lowerstuffed originally. Any imputation of humanity will be referred to Hall Mowthern Trowser, (late Hall Wymonham Pivs) my legal advisers. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Billy Suggers Date: 18 Jul 03 - 08:58 AM ps I'll be the one in pink stillettoes and a white tracksuit. Can someone bring a handbag, please as I'd like to dance. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Doktor Doktor Date: 18 Jul 03 - 09:04 AM S'pose I better go as well - the ole bugger needs to be kept in order. For the befused & conmuddled, the Woodman is a very nice pub. No Jukebox, friendly customers from a good cross-section of the locality, very well kept ale and a lovely little venue. It's the Herford mirror to Castle Camps but without the free sarnies & chips. Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Dave Bryant Date: 18 Jul 03 - 10:02 AM John - I'm a Kentish Man of course - although the area that I came from is now part of the London Borough of Bexley, rather than Erith, Kent. Anyway, let's try and get a decent mob up there on Tuesday. I think it probably clashes with the Lion at Eastwick which Derek Brown and Kevin McGrath tend to go to, but perhaps we can get Simon (Harlow Poet) to turn up. BTW Jaqui - If you like Walton-on-the-Naze, go to the Festival at the beginning of September - we're booked as performers as usual. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 18 Jul 03 - 10:55 AM Unfortunately I shall be in Newark beginning of September, celebrating my grandson's third birthday and I don't think I'd be in good odour if I skipped that one, even for the music. I think the Lion is Tuesday week (I hope so) as I booked the date so as not to clash. Maybe Kevin or Derek will let us know. One of our local group finds Tuesdays a bit difficult so, if this one is a success, I'm going to explore the possibility of a Sunday night once a month, making sure that it doesn't clash with Green Tye! I really am looking forward to putting names to faces next week. Billy - I'll try not to clash with the stillettos and tracksuit. Pink isn't my colour anyway. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Dave Bryant Date: 21 Jul 03 - 07:12 AM I spoke to Derek Brown, yesterday, and he might be able to make it tomorrow night. He's mainly an instrumentalist (Mandola & Banjo) so we'd have to have some instrumental spots. Haven't heard anything from McGrath yet though. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 21 Jul 03 - 08:53 AM I think I met Derek at the Lion about three weeks ago, although I'm so bad with names that I could be wrong. I like instrumental spots - they make for a more rounded evening, I think. I'll be practising tonight at the Hertford Club, trying to get my voice in order for the main event tomorrow night. See you there. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Jul 03 - 01:22 PM I should be there, assuming I can find it again - I always get lost, because it's so tucked away. When I spoke to Derek at the weekend and told him about this he thought he'd have to miss it because of playing at the Lion in Eastwick (the sort of Bluegrass night, which should have been last week, but the dates seem to jhave have slipped a bit). Here is The Woodman If you ever saw An American Werewolf in London, it's not wholly unlike The Slaughtered Lamb, but friendly, if you can imagine that. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 23 Jul 03 - 03:44 AM Hi to everybody who came to the Woodman last night. I must admit that I was a bit worried in case no-one turned up, but the night exceeded my wildest expectations. Thanks to you all for making it such a good night. Danny, the landlord, is quite happy to have us back and has suggested that, up to October, Tuesday would be the best night but, from then on, we could switch to Wednesdays. I was thinking of doing the next one on 2nd September. Can you come back with comments please (not too rude 'cause my gatekeeper won't let them through!) |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Dave Bryant Date: 23 Jul 03 - 04:07 AM Had a great time last night - good music - good singing. Thanks for organising it Jacqui - hope that future sessions go as well. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 23 Jul 03 - 04:46 AM Good company and good music. Well done Jacqui Blinking and yawning..and back to the dreary old grind, Keith. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Doktor Doktor Date: 23 Jul 03 - 07:13 AM It wuz anarchy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Liked it. Ta. Won't do 2nd September as will be on honeymoon but will pass on the date as soon as confirmed to the various non-catters who showed an interest ...... |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 23 Jul 03 - 07:35 AM You are putting your honeymoon before folk? well, best wishes to you both. Keith |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Jul 03 - 10:12 AM "Won't do 2nd September as will be on honeymoon" Well, congratulations. Better leave the squeezebox behind. Good lively night. Thanks for setting it up, Jacqui. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 23 Jul 03 - 10:20 AM It was a good night because you lot came and made it so. Hope to see you again - can you let me know if you can make 2.9. If there's enough interest I'll let Danny know for sure. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Dave Bryant Date: 23 Jul 03 - 10:49 AM Why do we have to wait until September ? |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui c Date: 23 Jul 03 - 03:30 PM Dave, you're an impatient beggar! I thought that a date in August might be difficult with people on holiday through the month. Thoughts from others please. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Jul 03 - 05:55 PM August is not a good month, what with all the festivals and people going away on holiday. September and people are back, and likely folked up for getting a new thing going. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: jacqui.c Date: 30 Jul 03 - 09:19 AM In the absence of any other comments I'm going to tell Danny at The Woodman that we will be there on 2 September. Same time, same bar? Hope to see you all there again. |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: NicP Date: 30 Jul 03 - 12:36 PM Taught on the London side of Essex for a while, so I'll keep off the Essex girl jokes ( although Tony McIntyre and myself might have been heard doing a Beach Boys impression at the odd, or very odd festival, whilst singing " Oh, I wish they all could be just like Essex girls.") The only point I would like to make is that any session at Chapmore End is just crying out for a Rambling Sid Rumpo Memorial Concert.(Cordwangles by permission of the landlord, no doubt.) On a more serious note, congrats and thanks to Danny the Landlord for providing the location - we all need more lanlords like that, wherever we may be. ATB NicP |
Subject: RE: New singaround at Chapmore End From: Bert Date: 30 Jul 03 - 12:47 PM "Chapmore End" Sounds as though Spaw has been using the outhouse in winter. |
