Subject: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: GUEST,Algenon Date: 19 Jul 03 - 12:09 PM The Mercury nominees are announced on Tuesday at 11.30am. There hasn't been a folk nominee for two or three years, and its surely about time for another 'serious contender' a la Norma Waterson a few years ago. Who do mudcatters think should be on the list this year? Albums released between aug '02 - jul '03 are eligable. Can we get some bets in before the announcement? |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Jon B Date: 21 Jul 03 - 05:07 AM While I understand that others may have reservations, I can't think of any album more appropriate or deserving than Jim Moray's Sweet England. It would also have a chance at the winning rather than being a token folk nomination. |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: The Borchester Echo Date: 21 Jul 03 - 06:02 AM Taking on board the perils and pitfalls of 'folk tokenism', Sweet England does it for me too. It ought to be up there, it really should. |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: sledge Date: 21 Jul 03 - 06:26 AM I know its already gathered a few awards but Eliza Carhty's Anglicana should be a good contender. Sledge |

Subject: Good luck tonight Eliza From: LesB Date: 09 Sep 03 - 01:50 PM Here's wishing Eliza Carthy good luck in the Mercury Music awards tonight. You never know what might happen, if England can win a test match, there always hope. Cheers Les I moved this message here from another thread on the same topic. |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: GUEST,Ed Date: 09 Sep 03 - 02:39 PM It's on tonight. Good luck Eliza! Coverage on Radio 1 tonight, and BBC 4 for digital TV viewers. It's on BBC 2 on Friday as well (See the BBC website for more details, plus a live real audio feed from Radio 1) |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 09 Sep 03 - 04:09 PM If Eliza Doesent win, it will be a rip off, as most of the other nominations are rubbish. |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 09 Sep 03 - 05:26 PM Waht a fucking rip off!, if that crap is the best brittish album, then i'm a chinaman, absolote crap, I listened to the this on radio 1, they had a selection of listeners in the studio, they dismissed Elizas Album without even playing it, because and i quote ="it does not meet the criteria", and this rap shit does then? I switched the radio off at that point in disgust, I don't know what idiots were on the judging panel, but it was a load of shit. I won't be watching next year, load of bollocks.john |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: The Borchester Echo Date: 09 Sep 03 - 05:47 PM I listened to the streaming from BBC Radio 6 whilst working. All nominations were played, discussed and analysed with knowledge and intelligence. From what I have heard of Dizzy Rascal, the CD seems a worthy winner, representing as it does contempoary issues of real life in an indigenous genre style. |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 09 Sep 03 - 05:58 PM Eh? its rubbish! PS, you any relation to McGrath of Harlow, [you sound like him], or are you a social werker? |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: GUEST,Ed Date: 09 Sep 03 - 06:02 PM Chill out John! (and apologies for not answering your messages on other forums - I'v'e been busy) |

Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Sep 03 - 07:00 PM If I got up your nose sometime, j0hn, let me know what I said to do that. I might want to do it again some time. |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Ralphie Date: 09 Sep 03 - 07:18 PM Well Of course Eliza didn't win (innit). The whole award ceremony is an "industry puff" (innit) Comparing such diverse musical styles will always be perfidious (innit). And what is more....the food is normally crap too....(Err.....INNIT!) No change there then ! Seriously, there's more chance of Lord Lucan winning the Mercurys than a traditional, sincere English singer. No point moaning, it's just a fact. Ralphie...Innit! |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Ralphie Date: 09 Sep 03 - 07:22 PM Having said that. It's very refreshing for English Music to be considered at all....Big Up (and "Bling"....whatever that means!) to Eliza and company for at least trying... R x |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: The Borchester Echo Date: 09 Sep 03 - 07:49 PM Boy in da Corner, Anglicana, McGrath of Harlow...you're all bling bling. Ralphie: you'll get there when you realise Dizzee Rascal does English music too. |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 09 Sep 03 - 08:03 PM It was a big rip off, eliza should haf won. mcgrath-plaese see my pm.john |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Gervase Date: 10 Sep 03 - 01:41 PM Call me a bluff old traditionalist, but I can't see Dizzy Rascal becoming a household name as a result of his win. But, hey, big up to EC for the nomination - good on yer, gal! |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Cllr Date: 10 Sep 03 - 02:47 PM Im with Gervase on this one Well done to EC for the nomination! Cllr |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Manitas_at_home Date: 10 Sep 03 - 03:02 PM I've heard Dizzy Rascal described as a rapper ( I haven't heard him at all). Since when was rap an indigenous genre? |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 10 Sep 03 - 03:05 PM If Eliza had won then I'm sure that everybody would be going on about her "selling out". |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: The Borchester Echo Date: 10 Sep 03 - 03:54 PM Manitas: rap/garage is certainly indigenous where I live (Notting Hill) and, according to Dylan Mills (aka Dizzee Rascal) it is on his East London estate where his observations on the dismal horrors of daily life inspire the core of his music. Peter from Essex: probably, |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Sep 03 - 04:08 PM Missed it, and I don't think I missed too much. I find talk of "criteria" here a bit odd - if they do have criteria laid down, and Eliza's record doesn't meet those criteria, how come she was in the shortlist of records being considered in the first place? It sounds like they believe in making up the rules as they go along. Moving the gaolposts. (I meant to write goalposts - but I think that typo should be allowed to stand; after all, what is involved here is the way the music/culture industry seeks to erect prison walls around us all.) |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Ralphie Date: 10 Sep 03 - 06:01 PM OK... Nuff Respect to Mr Mills for having won...having seen the shock on his face on TV (Bless!) The bigger question is, will the style of music that he represents become the tradition that future traditionalists bang on about on a future version of Mudcat in 200 years time? That's a question that (obviously) none of us can answer. My gripe is not wih Mr Mills, but with the whole ridiculous shenanigans that surrounds these so called award ceremonies...It's all to do with "The Industry"....and little to do with music, or the musicians. And the food at the Grosvener is still crap ! Ah Well...Big Up the Mudcat Posse. Love Ralphie xx |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: The Borchester Echo Date: 10 Sep 03 - 06:59 PM McGrath: Well, I only listened on the web You can hear the whole of 'Boy in da Corner' here Ralphie: Probably (innit). Could you bring me a doggy bag next time? |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: Manitas_at_home Date: 11 Sep 03 - 02:11 AM Indigenous : native, belonging naturally. |
Subject: RE: Mercury Music Prize 2003 From: mooman Date: 11 Sep 03 - 03:41 AM These "prizes" are all a big con and sham IMHO. Having said that, well done and all power to Mr Rascal/Mills...I certainly have nothing against his style of music which is as "real" on the streets of East London as any of the music we normally talk about here is real for us. Ralphie (innit?)...anything coming up in Ypres this year? Peace and Respect moo |
