Subject: Lyr Add: RAMBLIN' SAILOR and TRIM RIG DOXIE
From: Roberto
Date: 20 Jul 03 - 03:26 PM

Here are two versions, the first by Martin Carthy, the second by A. L. Lloyd. Bye. Roberto

Ramblin' Sailor

a) Ramblin' Sailor, Martin Carthy, Second Album, Topic TSCD341 (1993), oroginal LP releases: Fontana STL 5362 (1966);
Topic 12TS341 (1977).

Oh, I am a sailor brisk and bold
Long time I've sailed the ocean,
Oh, I've fought for King and the Country too
Won honour and promotion

So now me brother shipmates I bid you all adieu
No more will I go to sea with you
But I'll ramble the country through and through
And I'll be a rambling sailor

Oh it's off to a village then I went
Where I saw lassies plenty
Oh I boldly stepped up to one of them
To court her for her beauty

Oh her cheeks they were like the rubies red
She'd a feathered bonnet a-covering her head
Oh, I put the hard word on her but she said she was a maid
The saucy little trim-rigged doxy

Oh I can't and I won't go along with you
You saucy rambling sailor
Oh me parents they would never agree
For I'm promised to a tailor

But I was hot shot eager to rifle her charms
A guinea says I for a roll in your arms
The deal was done and upstairs we went
Meself and the trim-rigged doxy

Oh it was haul on the bow and let your stays'ls fall
We was yardarm to yardarm bobbin'
Me shot all gone, to sleep I fell
And then she fell to robbin'

Oh, she robbed all me pockets of everything I had
She even stole me new boots from underneath the bed
And she even stole me gold watch from underneath me head
The saucy little trim-rigged doxy

And it's when I awoke in the morning bright
Oh I started to roar like thunder
Me gold watch and me money too
She bore away for plunder

Oh, but it wasn't for me watch nor me money too
For them I don't value but I tell you true
I think her little fire-bucket burned me bobstay through
That saucy little trim-rigged doxy

b) Trim Rig Doxie, A. L. Lloyd, A Sailor's Garland, Prestige / International INT 13043, from Transatlantic XTRA 5013, 1966

I am a sailor brisk and brave
Long time I've ploughed the ocean
And if you want to know me name
Me name it is Young Johnson

Says I, fellow shipmates, I bid you all adieu
No more to sea will I go with you
But I'll travel the country through and through
And I'll be a rambling sailor

As I was walking one fine day
Along the London river
A handsome girl I chanced to spy
We cruised along together

Her cheeks was like two rosies red
She'd a feathered bonnet on her head
I put the hard word on her but she said she was a maid
That pretty little trim-rig doxy

I can't and I shan't and I won't go with you
You saucy rambling sailor
Me parents they would not consent
I'm promised to a tailor

I was hot shot eager to rifle her charms
A guinea, she says, for a roll in me arms
The deal was done and we went upstairs
Meself and the trim-rig doxy

It was haul on the bow and let the stays'ls fall
And yardarm to yardarm bobbin'
Me shot all gone, asleep I fall
And she soon fell a-robbin'

She robbed me pockets of all I had
She stole me boots from the end of the bed
And she even took the watch from under me head
That saucy little trim-rig doxy

Now when I found that she was gone
I started to roar like thunder
Me gold watch and me money too
She bore away for plunder

But it ain't for me watch nor me money too
For them I don't value but I tell you true
I fear her little fire-bucket burned me bobstay through
That saucy little trim-rig doxy

Number 518 in the Roud Folk Song Index, where quite a lot of examples are listed; mostly from England, though it has also been found in Scotland, the USA and Australia. It was widely published on broadsides; a number of examples can be seen at  Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads:

The rambling sailor  and  The rambling soldier

The DT set was presumably taken from a Lou Killen record, and contains the comical mis-hearing "hardwood" for "hard word". I probably wouldn't call the Carthy and Lloyd sets separate "versions" (in the traditional sense) as they appear to be two recordings of the same single variant. I rather think that Martin learned the song from Bert.

Roberto: I think the first one in your message is the one Fogie wants, I've heard and have a recording of Pete Grassby (on his Malvern Hills CD) doing that version and he has a lovely rhythm to it.

Sal
