Subject: Spiers & Bowden in Salop
From: Trevor
Date: 21 Jul 03 - 12:26 PM

John Spiers and Jon Bowden are keeping the standard high by being the next guests at Hope Village Hall. September 6th is the date AND you also get to see up and coming accordionist and singer Harriett Bartlett, who is supporting (and as anybody who has seen and heard her will tell you Harriett is one talented young lady!).

Ale and wine bar, a great atmosphere in deepest and most beautiful South Shropshire and it's only going to set you back £8.00!

P-mail me for more details.

We saw them at Bridgnorth. If you think they're good on CD, they're twice as good live.

I'm glad people like this duo, who I saw in Sidmouth live. They would appeal to young listeners, and have a lot of rock type energy. However I cant help thinking that its a shame Cutting and Wood arent doing their thing at present. I dont think B&S would stand the scrutiny. Maybe thats just an old conservative mindset?

They appeal to older listeners too, fogie!

Excellent musicians with a great choice of material and the rapport between them is great fun- they obviously enjoy what they're doing, and that enjoyment comes over to the audience.

I saw them at Warwick and twice at Bridgnorth and I look forward to seeing them again soon!

Fogie, I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. Yes, Cutting and Wood are superb musicians, perhaps better than John and Jon, I don't know. If there is some sort of league table you could make up your own mind where to place this fiddler or that box player, but Spiers and Boden seem to have caught the attention at the moment, and deservedly so. I'm sure you are right, they would appeal to young listeners, but they appeal to me as well, and it's been many a year since anyone has described me as young.
Anyway, the point is, Hope Village Hall ought to be full to bursting point with people who will be able to decide for themselves whether Spiers and Boden are worth the praise they are attracting.

I can smugly say that I think we were the first North West club to book them - - for Extravaganza 2 at the Open Door in June 2002. Since then we've had them back for Extravaganza 4 and they'll be back again for Extravaganza 6 next March....safe to say, we rather like 'em!

Cheers...........Harry.

Well, if you weren't there you missed a great night. John and Jon were superb - well worth the praise they've been getting in this forum and other places. The energy they put into their music gave a real buzz to the set and, as mentioned above, they seem to really enjoy what they're doing. Their arrangements are pretty impressive as well.

Harriet Bartlett also did her stuff to the usual high standard - more of that on her thread.

The next big night at Hope will be November 29th when Bob Pegg is visiting - more of that later.
