Subject: New Folk Club 9in Hull)
From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull
Date: 05 Aug 03 - 02:09 PM

I am opening a Folk Roots and Accoustic Club in Hull shortly.
It will be at The Marlborough Club, Chanterlands Avenue, Hull.
every Thursday evening, starting on the 4th of September.
Its a good venue, with a good concert room with stage.
I have spoken privately to a few people that have kindly volounteered to get involved they are=
Bassic-He organised a music festival a few years ago.
Linda Kelly-Ran the Folk Club at Beverley Festival
Ossonflags-Has been involved with various clubs over the years.

Due to work commitments etc these people will not be there every week
The idea I have is that ALL singers and musicians and listeners will be welcome.Admission will be free to encourage people to go, but we might have a raffle to raise money to book acts, perhaps starting off with cheap local acts.
Stuff like this will be sorted out at the first night, I hate meetings and commitees and stuff, and would like to keep things informal, but perhaps a quick ideas session would be an idea, for people to give their ideas?

The landlord [Chris] is easy going and supports live music and books acts, he has given us the room for free.
I have found the venue, and intend to promote it,
but the format and music depends really on who turns up,
though everyone will get a chance, and beginers wether singers or musiciasns will be encouraged.
Hopefully see you all there!
jOhn

John, you obviously find very good advice on mudcat. At quarter past five you started a thread asking advice on running a folk club, and here you are less than two hours later doing it.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

Great to hear of a new club. Will try to make it along the M62 one Thursday night (can't make it on the 4th due to gig commitments in Derbyshire). Would love to be able to persuade you to put on Julie Ellison as one of the guests! Contact me via John@Adaxia.com if you wish.

As regards advice on running a club, you could do worse than taking a look at the Rivelin Folk Club in Sheffield. You couldn't to meet a nicer bunch of people, very welcoming, great sense of humour, well attended singers nights. No door charge just a collection and they raise enough to have the occasional guest.

They have a website at http://www.dgbiz.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

Thanks everybody, JOhn and Murray etc-you would be very welcome, the bear is ok, and as its a social club the prices are slightly cheaper than the pubs.I work in the indian take-away opposite the place, so I will try to persaude my boss to give us a pot of curry at cost price or as near as possible to that, for our supper. I've been working there 9 years now so I might be able to persaude him to give us a free pan of curry as sponsorship/advertising! I'll see what I can do.
As I said earlier, I have found the venue, the rest of it is up to you ie if on a certain night they are all shanty singers or singer songwriters then thats what it will be for that night.
I would like it to be easy going and a similar format to the recent temporary Folk Club at the Beverely Folk Festival, that Linda and Mick and Roger did such a good job of organising, ie anyone that wants to have a go, be they singers, or musicians is given a chance and made welcome and encouraged.
I hate rules and don't intend having any, but would simply ask that any singer/musician that wants to do a spot is given the chance to do so.
So wether you sing, play or just listen, lets see you in there!

PS-Malcolm and Bill-you are obviously both welcome there, sorry I can't pay you for going, at least for the time been, but as I said earlier=the landlord is keen on music, and does his paying gigs on Friday and Saturday, so if you go and do a spot and the landlord likes you, you might get a paying gig out of it, [not sure what he pays, or what you charge, discus it between yourselves], anyway = i think you live near each othrr? i know Bill lives near Selby, not sure about Malcom, maybe you could give each other a lift? anyway, be good to see you there.john

Sorry Geoff, I should have made it clear. It is The Marborough Club, 94-96 Newstead Street HU5 3NB. Tel 01482 342770.
From the Spring Bank West, junction it is the 2nd street on the right.
Anyone coming from outside of Hull, just follow the signs for "KC Stadium", go past the stadium, and onto Chanterlands Avenue.
If you go to multimap [www.multimap.com], type in your postcode, then the clubs postcode it will give you door to door directions.

It's bang in the middle of the Spanish Quarter. Just follow the "Latin Hull" signs and the AA yellow signs with the sombrero symbol on from the south. Or the north, come to that. Or the west, thinking about it. But not the east because that's the sea that is.

Yes, it's 9PM start Beardy.Though Les suggested to me that a beginers session/workshop from 8.30 till 9.00 could be a good idea, I agreed with his suggestion, so if anyone is intersted in this idea, you could go at 8.30pm.
I have recieved a few PM's about this from various people, asking about the format, who are we going to book? etc.
The format is whatever people prefer, there is a small stage there, but nobody is forced to use it, I'm not sure yet, who we are going to book, it depends on interest.I have decided that the first 4 weeks wil be singers/musicians nights and will be free admission to get people interested.
I would like to stress that this is not a Mudcat event, but an event where Mudcatters along with everyone else are welcome.
So if any non member is reading this, you will be as welcome as anyone else.
I would also like to stress that all singers/musicians regardless of age, ability or nationality are welcome. There is a large Kurdish community in Hull, many of whom are musicians, also my boss [Bangladeshi], plays the flute, I have told him he is welcome to come along and play a couple of tunes.
Also if anyone is just starting out in folk singing/ playing and wants an oppertunity to have a go at stuff in front of an appreciative audience then feel free, many of the folkies around here Les, Mick etc have got years of experience, and I'm sure they will pass on any tips/advice etc.
I would like to publicly thank everybody that has offered their support, a couple of people have refered to this as my new folk club, it isn't, it's everybodys! All I did was book the room!
There will be no rules as such, but I would like to politely request that the tables on the left as you walk in be reserved for non-smokers, [the tables on the right have windows above them that we can open].
Hopefully see you all in there!

jOhn

I'll try to be there at 8.30 so if anybody fancies a few tunes, a chat or a bit if a muck about - see you there.

I have to agree with jOhn (no relation!). This venue will be what we all want, or rather what each of us wants, as far as is possible so that it fits in with what others want. So please be as 'vocal' as possible about what you like so that you can be 'instumental' in providing the local folk community with a venue that fits all needs. Don't just go once, dislike it and then not go again without telling others what you disliked.

Les

I will try and get there round about 9.30ish but all depends on shift. We had a long discussion about your venture at the Whitby fest and you know I, along with others, will give you all the support and encouragement you need.I put the word around both at Whitby and the Shanty fest. so expect to see a few.

Cheers Mick. 9Mick is not a folkie!, but I know he is a good singer, lead singer with Punch the Horse, [best band down our street], and he is keen to see traditional singing encouraged, and I know he will pass on any relavent tips to beginners]
i'm sure Les will do the same for any musicians.
I saw Maggie this morning, 9Mrs Les), and she is taking her friend called Karen, and telling other people about this.
I realised today why Maggie is called The Fragrant One, 9 She is an aromatherapissed, and is an Indian Head Massager as well)

I agre with Les, ie if anybody goes and doesn't like it, they should say why, and give their ideas.
This is a new thing, and we are open to ideas/suggestions.
