The death has occurred of the musician, singer and songwriter Redd Stewart. Born in 1921, he was christened Henry Ellis but changed to "Redd" because of his colouring. He will always be remembered for the number which became an international smash - "The Tennessee Waltz" which has been recorded and sung times without number. Others include "You Belong to Me" and a marvellous reworking of an old fiddle tune "Bonaparte's Retreat." Always remembered.

When I was a kid of 5 or so, I went to my first "concert." Playing at the football stadium in the little town where I grew up was PeeWee King. I got a songbook and had it autographed by King and the band including Redd Stewart. They had several collaborations that played frequently on jukeboxes and radios, an early crossover you might say. Besides "Tennessee Waltz" they had done "Bonaparte's Retreat" and a song my Mom loved to sing, "Slowpoke." But I was a PeeWee King fan because they flew into the little airport on their own plane, put on a show in my town, and dressed in well fringed "Western" attire including cowboy boots! To me at 5, they might as well have been gods.

Many years later I realized the music was still good and Redd Stewart was a big part of it. Kinda' like Buck Owens and Don Rich, I don't think King would have been quite so successful without Redd Stewart.

Stewart was the Tommy Duncan to King's Bob Wills. I believe Redd's brother Bill is still working the bluegrass gospel circuits. Patti Page looted the Redd Stewart songbook for "Change Partners" as well as Tennessee Waltz. Bill Monroe took this song as a challenge, and wrote "Kentucky Waltz" in response.

Gern, I think it was the other way around........The way I heard the story was that Redd and PeeWee were listening to "Kentucky Waltz" and Stewart wondered if there was something similar for Tennessee....and if not, there should be. Stewart's lyrics were put to a no-name waltz tune King had around under the name "No Name Waltz." I think this was about 1950 or thereabouts as Patti Page recorded it and had a #1 in early '51. Ky Waltz is dated both at '42 and '46 depending on the source.

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU BELONG TO ME (King/Price/Stewart)

My favorite from Stewart and King was "You Belong To Me" which was also recorded by Patti Page although I preferred Jo Staffords' rendering and my favorite version of all is by Vonda Shepard.

See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle
Just remember, darling all the while
You belong to me

See the market place in old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
Just remember when a dream appears
You belong to me

I'll be so lonesome without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too
And blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til you're home again
You belong to me

Maybe you'll be lonesome too
And blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til you're home again
You belong to me

Maybe you'll be lonesome too
And blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til you're home again
You belong to me

We have a session tonight, as usual, at the Manners pub in Bakewell, Derbyshire.

I'll make sure we play the Tennessee Waltz and Bonaparte's Retreat in memory of Redd.
