I played a show last week with a singer songwriter I had never met before named Kimmie Rhodes. I had heard some of her songs before, and knew of her, but never seen her perform before - but really enjoyed her music very much.

She performs with her husband and producer, Joe Gracey on bass and her son Gabe Rhodes on guitar. They played a wide range of songs, mostly her own - and mixed a few favorties from Waylon, Willie, Townes, Tom Waits - others. They had a nice simple folksie presentation and layed back but polished musical style - nothing to get in the way of pure enjoyment of the song. No theatrics, no practiced presentation - just good music, carefully performed from the heart.

Great show. Surprisingly folkie. I heard Kimmie joke with a fan that she was just an old hippie chick. Not true; she ain't old!

Yes, I know Kimmie and have all five of her CDs.

Her best album is the excellent "West Texas Heaven." It includes duets with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Townes Van Zandt and features some of the best Texas songwriting (and that's saying a lot) that I've ever heard. "Picture in a Frame," which is all duets with Willie Nelson, some of them taken from other albums, is also very good.

"Jackalopes, Moons & Angels," a compilation drawn from her early LPs is pretty good, particularly the duet with Joe Ely.

"Love Me Like A Song," is OK.

I'm less enraptured with "Rich from the Journey," which has a new agey feel to too many of the songs, although there are several very good ones.

Watched in-process construction pictures of her new guitar by luthier Vince Pawless.

Yep. You'll find she has a number of fans here.

If I had to put a label on her, I'd just say she is a really GOOD country singer, as opposed to all the popular ones that are painful to listen to.

West Texas Heaven was getting heavy play at my house last year, but lately it has just been a couple of mp3s taken from it. I need to get the CD out again.
