Subject: ADD: Chased Old Satan Through the Door From: Stewie Date: 18 Aug 03 - 11:12 PM CHASED OLD SATAN THROUGH THE DOOR Well, I got no skillet and I got no lid But ash cake tastes like shortening bread And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there Chorus: Over there, over there I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there For I got no skillet and I got no lid But ash cake tastes like shortening bread And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there Now I met old Satan down the lane And I hit him in the head with a walking cane And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there Chorus Now I chased old Satan around the stump And I gave him a kick for every jump And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there Chorus Now I run old Satan through the door And I hit him in the head with a two-by-four And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there Chorus Source: transcription of Woodie Brothers (Ephraim and Lawton) 'Chased Old Satan Through the Door' recorded on 29 May 1931 in Charlotte, NC, and issued as Victor 23579 in August 1931. Evidently, it sold only 864 copies. Reissued on Various Artists 'Music From the Lost Provinces: Old-Time Stringbands from Ashe County, North Carolina & Vicinity, 1927-1931' Old Hat CD-1001 and also on Various Artists 'Black & White Hillbilly Music: Early Harmonica Recordings from the 1920s & 30s' Trikont CD US-0226'. I wasn't able to decipher the 'ash cakes' line, but a message to the old-time music newsgroup clarified it for me. I subsequently found the following in Google's achives of the rec.food.cooking newsgroup:

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Chasing old satan through the door From: Azizi Date: 28 Aug 06 - 06:44 AM The current thread about Pluto being demoted from planetary status, Pluto goes down, got me thinking of Lucifer being thrown out of Heaven. And that reminded me of a Maria Corelli book I read some time ago about Lucifer {otherwise known as Satan and The Devil} being a handsome man who goes on a cruise ship and tries to tempt people to do bad things. Lucifer really wants folks to resist his temptations because every time someone turns away from evil, he {Lucifer} gets one rung closer in his climb back up the ladder to heaven. Of course, people never knew that the hahdsome man was Lucifer, the Devil. Nor did they know that out of the blue {as it were} they were being tested. That was an interesting concept. I wondered if anyone had written a song about Lucifer {the Devil/Satan} using that some concept. And so off I went to the Mudcat Search engine to see what songs about Satan I could find. I found this thread. And I found the same ole same ole traditional images of mean old Satan. But there may be some hope out there for Satan {aka Pluto, Lord of the Underworld}. Maybe there are songs that portray Satan as a prodigal son, a fallen angel trying to get back home. Maybe there are those who 'get' that we are being tested but we are suppose to "yield not to temptation for yielding is sin". So this morning I decided that I would do a good deed-to help ole Satan out-by refreshing this thread and asking this question: What other songs about Satan or that mention Satan do you know? I thank you and {though I can't speak for him,or her, or it}, I think that Lucifer also thanks you. |
