I'd like to know the lyrics to the song "Chasing old satan through the door", heard from the Woodie Brothers, a hillbilly band from the 1930s.
If anybody can help me, I'll be very grateful.

"Chased old Satan through the Door,"
Hit him in the head with a two-by-four,

The song by the Woodie Brothers is on the cd, Music from the Lost Provinces, Old Hat cd1001, reissued 78s by several groups.
Available from a couple of sites listed on google.
Sorry, no other information.

CHASED OLD SATAN THROUGH THE DOOR

Well, I got no skillet and I got no lid
But ash cake tastes like shortening bread
And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there

Chorus:
Over there, over there
I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there
For I got no skillet and I got no lid
But ash cake tastes like shortening bread
And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there

Now I met old Satan down the lane
And I hit him in the head with a walking cane
And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there

Chorus

Now I chased old Satan around the stump
And I gave him a kick for every jump
And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there

Chorus

Now I run old Satan through the door
And I hit him in the head with a two-by-four
And I'm gonna wear that starry crown over there

Chorus

Source: transcription of Woodie Brothers (Ephraim and Lawton) 'Chased Old Satan Through the Door' recorded on 29 May 1931 in Charlotte, NC, and issued as Victor 23579 in August 1931. Evidently, it sold only 864 copies. Reissued on Various Artists 'Music From the Lost Provinces: Old-Time Stringbands from Ashe County, North Carolina & Vicinity, 1927-1931' Old Hat CD-1001 and also on Various Artists 'Black & White Hillbilly Music: Early Harmonica Recordings from the 1920s & 30s' Trikont CD US-0226'.

I wasn't able to decipher the 'ash cakes' line, but a message to the old-time music newsgroup clarified it for me. I subsequently found the following in Google's achives of the rec.food.cooking newsgroup:

Foods such as potatoes, corn, onions, and nuts could be roasted by burying them in hot ashes for insulation and placing live coals on top of the ashes. Ash cakes were baked by wrapping the dough in cloth, placing them in a cleaned out corner of the fireplace, and covering them with ashes and coals. They were supposed to have a delicious flavor when baked that way, but it was difficult to control the heat, or keep the bread clean.
From 'Don's Spicy Kitchen'.

The Woodie Brothers recording is available (remastered) on a Musical TRaditions CD called "Old Ships Sailing for the Promised Land". It's a compilation of white gospel music recorded from 1926-1938 (compiled by Keith Summers) and it's available from CAMSCO MUsic, 800/548-FOLK (3655)

Good CD.

The current thread about Pluto being demoted from planetary status, Pluto goes down,
got me thinking of Lucifer being thrown out of Heaven.

And that reminded me of a Maria Corelli book I read some time ago about Lucifer {otherwise known as Satan and The Devil} being a handsome man who goes on a cruise ship and tries to tempt people to do bad things. Lucifer really wants folks to resist his temptations because every time someone turns away from evil, he {Lucifer} gets one rung closer in his climb back up the ladder to heaven. Of course, people never knew that the hahdsome man was Lucifer, the Devil. Nor did they know that out of the blue {as it were} they were being tested.

That was an interesting concept.

I wondered if anyone had written a song about Lucifer {the Devil/Satan} using that some concept. And so off I went to the Mudcat Search engine to see what songs about Satan I could find.

I found this thread. And I found the same ole same ole traditional images of mean old Satan. But there may be some hope out there for Satan {aka Pluto, Lord of the Underworld}. Maybe there are songs that portray Satan as a prodigal son, a fallen angel trying to get back home.

Maybe there are those who 'get' that we are being tested but we are suppose to "yield not to temptation for yielding is sin".

So this morning I decided that I would do a good deed-to help ole Satan out-by refreshing this thread and asking this question:

What other songs about Satan or that mention Satan do you know?

I thank you and {though I can't speak for him,or her, or it},
I think that Lucifer also thanks you.

Try the collected works of the Louvin Brothers; they had a whole LP called "Satan Is Real"
