THE BOLD GENDARMES
(Offenbach)

We're public guardians, bold but wary,
And of ourselves, we take good care,
To risk our precious lives, we're chary,
When danger looms, we're never there
But when we meet some helpless woman,
Or little boys that do no harm

Chorus:
We run them in, We run them in,
We run them in, We run them in,
We show them, we're the bold gendarmes,
We run them in, We run them in,
We run them in, We run them in,
We show them, we're the bold gendarmes!

Sometimes our duty's extra mural,
And butterflies we love to chase
We like to gambol in things rural,
Commune with nature, face to face,
But to our beats then back returning,
Refreshed by nature's holy charms,
(Chorus)

If gentlemen will make a riot
And punch each other's heads at night
We're quite disposed to keep it quiet,
Provided that they make it right,
But if they do not see it
And give us our proper terms,
(Chorus)

These are the words I sing (from memory). No idea what the source was, as I learned it over thirty years ago!!

From: Kenny B (inactive)

I would agree the words above are more complete than my previous posting.

From memory the verses and chorus below are from the "Levy" site music

The Bold Gens d'Armes
From Genevieve by Jaques Offenbach

We watch while all the city's sleeping
To chase the rogues that prowl at night
Always an eye wide open keeping
This is our duty and delight
Within these shades how calm, tis charming
That's true for you, 'tis quiet here,

Chorus....
How gay the life, how gay the life ,
Of men of arms, of men of arms,
We like good cheer
How gay the life, how gay the life,
Of men of arms, of men of arms
We laugh, at all alarms,

Our iron coats, we always wear them
Not quite the silk they are in truth
For march and rest we always hear them
Fear no thief or furtive youth
Always we dream our dreams with pleasure,
That's right there nothing like good rest

The title, if you search at Levy, is "Duet of the Two Men-At-Arms," or "Couplets des Hommes D'Armes" (see link by Kenny B.). 'Bold' does not appear in the title. No indication of the man who provided the English translation in the 1868 sheet music. More than one translation was used in presentations, which is the reason for disparity in the English texts so far presented. Gimpel and Barnett are two listed in the link by Kenny B.

The words of the 1868 sheet music at Levy still need some TLC.
1st verse, Line 1- To watch all the city's sleeping,
1st verse, line 3- Always an eye wide open,

Cho. line 2- We laugh at all, at all alarms,

and a few more minor corrections needed. The full title of the popular offering is Geneviève de Brabant."

this song has slightly different words when sung by the late Josef Locke, but it is sung to the Aerican tune-song "The Marines Hymn.

From memory John Philip Sousa was a violin player with Jacques Offenbach, who wrote the melody of the Bold Gendarmes which latterly became melody of the Marines Hymn, after he toured the USA in 1876
