If you have midi keyboard or external synthesiser module, then send the midi signal out to your keyboard and then record the audio output of your keyboard either using your computer or using an external sound recorder such as an Edirol or Zoom recorder. To get a wav file, you need to set your recording device up accordingly.

I use this method. I have a usb midi interface to a Yamaha synth module and record the audio output using an Edirol R09 sound recorder set to record in 16 bit wav. I find the results entirely satisfactory.

I haven't tried recording via the computer this way because I find recording via the audio input of my computer results in somewhat noisy recordings, but it should work providing you do not overload the computer and midi isn't particularly heavy on resources unless you are using a software synth to create the sounds - which you would not be in this case.

Yes, one computer to another would work, though you have to be careful not to overload the input. If you go 'Line Out' from one machine to 'Line In' on the other, all should be well.

If, for example, the output of one is at loudspeaker level and the input of the other is at microphone level, it will distort horribly.

I'm sure you will get the results you want, though - you seem to have it all sussed!

Thanks I will have to try out recording at the same time as I play. Maybe it would work laptop to desktop if I can not do it all on one computer. I checked out some sites with downloads also. We have a piece that we want to make a sound track for and use as background music for singing to.

It depends upon whether your sound card is 'full duplex' or not.

In simple terms, 'full duplex' means that the card can play back and record simultaneously - you can play a MIDI file (with Media Player, for example) at the same time as using recording software (Sound Recorder, for example) to record the sound as it is being produced.

If your card is full duplex, then Windows already has the tools you need. If not, you will have problems with practically any software you try, and your only sure way is to record the sound card output on an external analogue recorder, then play it back in again to record a WAV file. Messy, and not always acceptable quality.

The linux command line version of 'timidity' will do it. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to do it and preserve the original voicing. Several people have suggested playing the midi file and recording it as a .wav. My experience with that has been very bad. If you find a good free method, please PM me with the information or post it here.

Depending on your soundcard, you can use any wave file editor to record the output of the soundcard through noteworthy or whatever.

WaveMaker is one that will do it entirely as a software process and in batch mode if desired. Although a bit slower, I use Total Recorder to do the job. Since TR is a software recorder, it won't process the files in batch mode, but it will make wave files and is quite a bit less expensive.

Jeger, besides those I had posted earlier, have a look at the tutorials and the forum at Computer Music. There was at least one message thread about converting a MIDI file into an Audio/Wav file.

I am going the other way from the links I found in the above post. I need to wave the midi goodbye and make a wav file from a midi file. By the way, some spelled it wav and some spelled it wave :-) but whatever does the job is what I am interested in.

There are some good links in George Seto's posting of 17 Jan 03 at 8:59p in this thread. Generally, "wav" is spelled without the "e" so that might be why it didn't show up in a search.:-)

How do you create wave files from midi files. I am sure this has been brought up here before but I could not find a thread. I know there is software available for this.Which is the best and easiest? And is there shareware available for this?   I checked out a few sites but am sure someone here can direct me before I jump into something.
I have a midi recording and also have the file saved in a couple of music programs, including Noteworthy composer.
