Subject: an Old & In the Way song"Pig in
From: Jon (balts@what.on.ca)
Date: 29 Jan 97 - 11:08 AM

"Pig in a Pen" is a fantastic bluegrass tune on the fantastic album "Old & In the Way" by the band of the same name. Members were Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vasser Clements and John Khan. Some of the words are hard to make out. It is credited as a "traditional" song. Please send me the lyrics if you can find/make them out; I'd be eternaly in your debt! Thanks! Jon: balts@wchat.on.ca

PIG IN A PEN
Traditional, performed by The Stanley Brothers

I got a pig at home in a pen, corn to feed 'im on.
All I need is a pretty little girl to feed 'im when I'm gone.

Goin' on the mountain to sow a little cane,
Raise a barrel of sorghum to sweeten old Liza Jane.

*When she sees me comin', she wrings her hands and cries:
"Yonder comes the sweetest boy that ever lived or died."

*Now when she sees me leavin', she wrings her hands and cries:
"Yonder goes the meanest boy that ever lived or died."

Black cloud's a-risin', surest sign of rain.
Get the old grey bonnet on Little Liza Jane.

Yonder comes that gal of mine. How you think I know?
Can tell by that gingham gown hangin' down so low.

Bake them biscuits, lady. Bake 'em good 'n' brown.
When you get them biscuits baked, we're Alabamy bound.

*Not on original recording.

I need the third verse from Old and In the way. Garcia garbles the words so badly I can't make anything out except the last line of the third verse.

I seems like something to do with bisquits, Sorgum and Cane something something sweet little liza jane.

David Grisman Please help!

Here is the first thread we had on this song. You can't find it with the "filter" because it's more than 365 days old, but you can still find it with a forum search.

Thanks to Gene, I now have a much more enjoyable/logical lyrics for Pig in the Pen than the version done by Old and in the Way. My group will now perform it along those lines.

Thanks Gene for your time and effort!! Brian Pierce

The name "Old And In The Way" was also taken from a Stanley Brothers piece. It was a maudlin recitation number by Carter.

Subject: Lyr Add: SHADY GROVE (from Doc Watson)
From: Terry in San Diego
Date: 03 Sep 98 - 12:46 AM

Here's Doc Watson's version of Shady Grove:

Chorus:
Shady Grove, my true love
Shady Grove they say
Shady Grove, my true love
Bound to go away.

Cheeks as red as a bloomin' rose Eyes the prettiest brown
She's the darlin' of my life,
Sweetest girl in town.

Chorus

Wish I had a big, fine horse
And corn to feed him on.
And pretty little Shady Grove
To feed him when I'm gone

Chorus

When I was a little boy
I wanted a Barlow knife.
Now I want little Shady Grove
To say she'll be my wife.

Chorus

Last time I seen my Shady Grove
She was standin' in the door.
Shoes and stockings in her hand
And bare feet on the floor.

Chorus

Kiss from pretty little Shady Grove
Is sweet as brandy wine
And there's no girl in this whole world
Prettier than mine.

Chorus

Chords are Dm, C, Dm, F, C, Am, Dm

Sorry if my line breaks didn't work in HTML.

Terry

It works much better with line breaks at the end of every line, Terry. It's [br], but with angle brackets instead of the square ones. -Joe Offer-
