Subject: Alexandria, VA Chantey Sing & Sail From: Wincing Devil Date: 11 Sep 03 - 12:55 AM For the past few months, Ship's Company has been hosting a Chantey Sing and Sail in Alexandria. We go out in the two masted dory "Potomac", cruising the Potomac River under sail and sing chanties.
I had time to wander around Alexandria before the most recent sail/sing, and got some rather weird pictures. Apparently Hyatt Regency Hotels sent their managerial folks on one of those "Team Building" scavenger hunts. I also ran into a group from the Red Hat Society (Not Linux fans, ladies that like to wear red hats!). It was beautiful night for a sail, albeit shortened by the earlier sunset, but we got to see a great Moonrise! The pix are at: http://www.WincingDevil.com/Alex030910/ The gallery of past Sings may be seen at http://www.WincingDevil.com/gallery.html If you want more info on the Sail/Sing, let me know |
Subject: RE: Alexandria, VA Chantey Sing & Sail From: Wincing Devil Date: 12 Sep 03 - 08:20 PM I've just been informed that the last Chantey Sail & Sing for this year will be Wednesday, September 24th. It's getting dark so early that we get little sailing time, leaving at 6:30pm. If you'd like to be on the Final Sail & Sing for 2003, drop an email to Myron Peterson. Hurry, only room for 23 folks! Watch this space for the announcement of the 2004 Sail/Sing! |
Subject: RE: Alexandria, VA Chantey Sing & Sail From: Stewart Date: 12 Sep 03 - 10:54 PM Is the "Potomac" the dory I witnessed being launched by the Alexandria Seaport Foundation in 1995? I think that was a year before the three-masted schooner Alexandria was sold and then sank. I lived in Arlington for a year back then, but am now on that other coast. Wish I could sail and sing with you, but will have to be content to sing chanties on the Wawona here in Seattle. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Alexandria, VA Chantey Sing & Sail From: Bill D Date: 12 Sep 03 - 11:31 PM great pics! I see my good wife, Ferrara in several of the Maryland sets, and my son in one. Guess I'll have to get me old body out there more often! |
Subject: RE: Alexandria, VA Chantey Sing & Sail From: Wincing Devil Date: 14 Sep 03 - 11:36 PM Stewart: The one and the same! She's quite fun to sail. We try to engage the "D sail" (deisel) as little as possible, usually for manuvering around dock and squeezing through the Woodrow Wilson bridge.
There's nothing like singing a hauling shanty whilst actually hauling on the sheets! Here's the website for the Alexandria Seaport Foundation |

Subject: RE: Alexandria, VA Chantey Sing & Sail From: Wincing Devil Date: 15 Sep 03 - 05:23 PM No, that's a street light/reflection of same. We had a beautiful view of a moonrise, but it didn't take to well with my camera. Mars was about 1 to 2 hands away. And, approprately, we sang "Shine on Harvest Moon", as it was the Harvest Moon. |
Subject: RE: Alexandria, VA Chantey Sing & Sail From: Wincing Devil Date: 24 Sep 03 - 12:42 AM Due to conditions in Alexandria, the final Chantey Sing & Sail will be NEXT Wednesday, October 1st. Still departing from the Alexandria Seaport Foundation dock between King and Prince Street at 6:30PM |
