Can't believe this Carter classic is not posted. I hear it differently from other transcriptions of it found in online Carter lyric compilations.

Hear it at RECORD LADY, using the song index there to find it.

============================================================

WE WILL MARCH THROUGH THE STREETS OF THE CITY
As recorded by the Carter Family

1. We will march through the streets of the city
With our loved ones gone before.
We will sit on the banks of the river,
Where we'll meet to part no more.

2. Jesus called me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
And transported by His blood.

3. From thy fount of *every blessing,
Do now hark to sing God's praise;
Dreams of mercy never ceasing,
**Calls for songs of loudest praise.

Repeat Verse 1

4. Hark the voice of Jesus calling,
"Who will go and work today?
Fields are white and the harvest is waiting;
Who will bear the sheaves away?"

Reprise of Verse 1:
5. Yes we'll march through the streets of the city
With our loved ones gone before.
We will sit on the banks of the river,
Where we'll meet to part no more.

* The lead singer sings this as "everah" but you can hear the harmony clearly singing "every."

** This is the only word I cannot swear to.

@ gospel

I'm not sure which is correct, but there's a different transcription in the book accompanying The Carter Family: In the Shadow of Clinch Mountain (Bear Family's 12-CD set) is:

2. Jesus saw me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He to rescue me from all danger
And transported by His blood.

3. From that fount of every blessing
You know how to sing God's praise
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Calls for songs of loudest praise.

However, according to Jerry Dallal (Click here),

v1 [Susan's 2]: Jesus sought NOT Jesus saw
v2 [Susan's 3]: you now are NOT you know how

Charles Wolfe says "We Will March Through The Streets Of The City is page from what gospel expert Harlan Daniels calls 'the Metropolitan Hymnal'."

Some lines are shared with COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING (at The Cyber Hymnal).
