D
That big eight wheeler goin down the track

means your true lovin' Daddy aint comin back

          G                D
I'm movin on, I'm a- rolling on

          A7
You were flyin' too high for my little old sky

             D
So I'm movin' on

The title is, "I'M MOVIN' ON"

The original record by Hank Snow sold seven Million in 1948 and at least two hundred thousand every year since. It's one of those great records that was perfectly ballanced with the different parts fitting so well together that one listens to it over and over again.

By the way, there's no drum on this record.

There's a Homer and Jethro parody of it that is really quite funny.

Sorcha: the verse is,

THE OLD TOM CAT WAS FEELIN MEAN WHEN HE CAUGHT HIS TAIL IN THE SEWIN' MACHINE
HE'S MOVIN' ON, HE'S A-ROLLIN' ON
HE RIPPED A STITCH WHEN HE HIT THE DITCH
HE'S MOVIN' ON

(other verss)

OLD HOMER HE GOT MIGHTY CLEAN WHEN HE SLIPPED AND FELL IN THE WASHIN' MACHINE
HE'S MOVIN ON, HE'LL SOON BE GONE.
HE COULDN'T STRADDLE THAT DOGGONE PADDLE, HE'S MOVIN ON.

JODY GIBSON

I'm movin (G) on, I'm a rollin (D) on

You were (A7) flyin' too high for my little old sky so I'm movin (D) on

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BUG-OUT BALLAD (MOVING ON)
From: dick greenhaus
Date: 21 Sep 03 - 10:55 PM

and while we're at it:

THE BUG-OUT BALLAD (MOVING ON)

Hear the patter of running feet
It's the old First Cav in full retreat
They're moving on; they'll soon be gone
They're haulin' ass, not savin' gas
They'll soon be gone.

Over on that hill there's a Russian tank
A million Chinks are on my flank
I'm movin' on, I'll soon be gone
With my M-1 broke, it ain't no joke
I'll soon be gone.

Million Chinks comin' through the pass
Playin' burp-gun boogie all over my ass
I'm movin' on, I'll soon be gone
With my M-1 broke, it ain't no joke
I'll soon be gone.

Twenty thousand Chinks comin' through the pass
I'm tellin' you, baby, I'm haulin' ass
I'm moving on; I'll soon be gone
I'm haulin' ass, not savin' gas
I'll soon be gone.

Standin' in a rice paddy up to my belly
From then on, they called me "Smelly"
I'm moving on; I'll soon be gone
I'm haulin' ass, not savin' gas
I'll soon be gone.

Here's papa-san comin' down the track
Old A-frame strapped to his back
He's moving on; he'll soon be gone
he's haulin' ass, not savin' gas
He'll soon be gone.

Here's mama-san comin' down the track
Titty hangin' out, baby on her back
She's moving on; she'll soon be gone
From her tits to her toes, she's damn near froze
She'll soon be gone.

I sung this song for the very last time
Gonna get Korea off my mind
I'm moving on; I'll soon be gone
I done my time in the shit and slime
I'm movin' on.

From The Erotic Muse, Cray
Collected from Cray, 1953
Note: a parody of a country classic by Hank Snow

In Vietnam, they sang:
The McNamara Line is a hundred miles long
Completely surrounded by Viet Cong
I'm movin' on etc.

Can anyone confirm the chords for this, preferably in the key of D ("Born" is on F#)?

Confirm the chords for which song? If you mean Moving On by Snow, the chords are

D
That big eight-wheeler rollin' down the track
                                  D7
Means your true-lovin' daddy ain't comin' back
                  G               D
'Cause I'm movin' on I'll soon be gone
         A7
You were flyin' too high for my little old sky
             D
So I'm movin' on

They jibe with what I remember.

This is how I play it, based on the Christy Moore version. (I capo on the second fret.)

Am
Born in the middle of the afternoon

    D                           G    Am
In a horse drawn carriage on the old A5

    Am
The big twelve wheeler shook my bed,

    D          Am          D       Em
"You can't stay here" the policeman said.

      Am         G       D          Em
You'd better get born in some place else.

   Am          G          Am          G
So move along, get along, Move along, get along,

F   G    Am
Go! Move! Shift!

Great stuff. That's the melody as written, i.e. in the key of C with "Born..." on E. If I want to sing it in D, all I'm going to need to do is shunt everything up by a whole tone, so instead of Am, D, G, Em and F the chords will need to be Bm, E, A, F#m and G. No problem. Thanks, michaelr!

You're very welcome. It's a fun song to sing.

Do you work with an instrumentalist? My fiddler and I came up with a way to use a 4/4 version of "Far Away" as an instrumental part in this song. Works a treat.

Sounds interesting. Which "Far Away" is that?

I only know this one. It's a waltz originally, written by Pete Jung.
