Subject: Audlem Bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy day.
From: maldenny
Date: 07 Oct 03 - 06:11 AM

We're holding the 5th (or is it 6th?) annual Audlem Bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy day on Saturday 8th November this year.

The day starts in the Shroppie Fly (one of Audlem's three pubs) at 12.30 p.m. til 5.30 p.m., and continues in the evening at the Lord Combermere from around 6.00 p.m. onwards. Food is available in all three pubs, and there's a good choice of beers.

It's a smallish event, around 30 musicians came last year, but all are welcome (we'd like to see your nyckelharpa this year, Sarah!).

If you want any further info, you can contact Mal at mal_denny@yahoo.co.uk

Is it restricted strictly to Bagpipes and Hurdy Gurdies only?

No, last year we had guitars, fiddles, crumhorns, whistles, recorders of various sizes, dulcimers and an English guitar (can't remember what else). We didn't have a nyckelharpa though!

Also, this year there should be a guest appearance of at least one Bulbul Tarang, playing "Quem Omagen da Virgen"!

I'll be there. It's a great day, on a small friendly scale. Of course it can be irritating, as there are likely to be a lot of people playing bagpipes and hurdy-gurdies: but there is always another pub to go to, and boats to look at(Shropshire Union Canal, if anyone else is thinking of boating there).

Maldenny,
KB and myself are comeing to Audlem the weekend before to see some friends who live in the village, is there anything on there 30th, 31st October or 1st Nov. I believe it is firework night in the village on the saturday night and there was talk of a disco on the Friday is there any traditional stuff on in the area? we did think of going to Wrexham on Friday night, as a friend runs a folk club there. We would love to have been there the following weekend, but kids are back at school!
Cheers, Lucy

Hawker,

'is there any traditional stuff on in the area? we did think of going to Wrexham on Friday night, as a friend runs a folk club there.'

You'd best check before going to Wrexham on the Friday night, as the FC which was on at the Wess Club/The Venue is now defunct. Is your friend Tamsin or Brenda?

This session is now replaced by a 3rd Sunday monthly event at Bwlchgwyn, just outside Wrexham.

To find out whats happening in the rest of the area, have a look at Folk Orbit, here:

http://www25.brinkster.com/folkorbit/

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Mr H

Camping available in John's field, Mr Happy - loads of room, no facilities! He'll sort you out with a field if you see him on arrival. Best of luck.

Lucy, I believe there's a firework display in the village on Saturday 1st November. The local music session is on Monday night in the Lord Combermere - apart from Folk Orbit, don't know of anything on over that weekend. Sorry we won't be seeing you.

Perhaps we will make it to your event another year.
Mr Happy,
our friend is Tamsin, it was still happening at the end of August, we shall have to get in touch with her!
Oh well, we'll find somewhere to entertain ourselves! I will have a look at Folk Orbit, thanks for your help.
Cheers, Lucy

Are all kinds of bagpipes represented? And are those who turn up from far and wide, or mainly local?

I shall be travelling from Newark if the weather's reasonable (along with a photographer who does pictures of "traditional Englang" for photo libraries). I assume that Greg, at least, will be travellng by narrowboat.

I have a previous engagement at the Heald Green Village Hall (NW Critics Group).

It would have been fun to join in with the Northumbrian Small Pipes, even if they might be drowned out by the GHB!

Many thanks to one & all who organised this great event.

Mr Happy & fiends had fabulous time & will certainly come again next time.

Also hearty thanks to 'Farmer John' for allowing us to camp in his field & also for the impromptu 'Hurdy Gurdy Workshop' in his barn on Sunday morning- most interesting & enlightening!

There was a chap in the Shoppy Fly playing what I was told was a 'Bulbul Taranga'.

I've an instrument very similar to this & would be interested in learning how to tune & play it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Here are low-resolution versions of Guy Erwood's pictures from the Shroppie Fly. As Greg noted, we had to leave in mid-afternoon, before the festivities were in full swing. By that time there was a good turnout of hurdy gurdies, but I think only one set of bagpipes.

Maybe Greg can put names to some of the faces. I can't, except that I myself feature (nearest camera) in DSCF3449.jpg.

3439 is Preston melodeon and Uillean pipes player Tom Walsh. 3442 is Audlem farmer, fiddler, hurdy-gurdy player and organiser of the event John Hardy (a desperate little man, if you know your Leadbelly). I got too bored to download the rest, they were taking a long time. And i realised there weren't going to be any of me: I saw the photographer leave before I got the mighty instrument out.

It was the thought of a banjo sacreligiously intruding on a pipes and hurdy gurdy day that drove us away, Greg! Or perhaps you were referring to an even more offending instrument....

It's that time of year again. We're holding the 7th (or is it 8th?) annual Audlem Bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy day on Saturday 12th November this year (so it won't clash with Bonfire Night).

The event is in the Shroppie Fly (one of Audlem's two pubs) at 12.30 p.m. til 5.30 p.m. Food is available in both pubs, and there's a good choice of beers.

It's a smallish event, with around 30 musicians each year. All are welcome, even non-drone instruments, and we might see the first public appearance of Ian's Talharpa, a fitting companion to his Bulbul Tarang and Ostrich Egg ocarina!!

There will be camping available as usual - no facilities, but plenty of space in the maize field! The only problem is the distance (approx 1 mile) between the field and the pub. Hope to see you all there.

Malcolm

Noted thanks Mal, hope to be there, complete with drones. In future - I hope there's going to be a future for this event - maybe better to start a new thread each year. Especially as this one got scrambled by Mudcat's recent techno traumas!

Guest: beginners are all welcome, especially if armed with HGs and pipes. I'd bring a tape recorder too, at least next year you could play all the tunes we played this year!

Fionn: I thought about a new thread this year, but thought the thread police would shout at me! Point taken, though.

Mr Happy, the camping's in one of Farmer John's fields, don't know which one. He said the previous one is full of maize this year! Wonder if it tastes OK?

Congratulations on your eighth year. I wish I could be there, but a couple thousand miles and (even more kilometers) intervene.

An observation - once I took a harp workshop, and the teacher had a medieval-style harp that had brays, little devices that popped in and out and made the harp buzz, if desired. Apparently medieval people preferred instruments that buzz. Such a harp would be right at home at your festival.

Hi Mal,
Please can you suggest 2 or 3 tunes that are "standards" at your event so I can at least have a couple ready?

Mr Happy: You've realised our dastardly plot!

Eleanor C: Someone's bound to play these:-

1. Les Filles de mon Pays.
2. Sciarazzula Marazzula/The Bear Dance (unsure about the spelling).
3. Horse's Bransle
4. Bourree de la Grande Poterie/Bourree a huit

Hope this helps

Malcolm

I was in Audlem on Monday morning - they've won the title of "Cheshire's Vibrant Village 2005". How about that then! One elderly lady said that all this vibrating was getting too much for her.

Mr Happy, thanks for the links. Hope you get out of the maize maze.

GUEST,leeneia: There seemed to be a vogue for raspy/flatulent-sounding instruments at that time. In addition to the gurdies we sometimes have a rackett, crumhornes etc. One enthusist in the village has made a couple of tromba marinas.

Dave cello : Don't worry, we often have a cello in our Monday session.
