Subject: Looking for God Bless the USA parodies From: Blackcatter Date: 21 Oct 03 - 12:29 AM Hi all, A conversation occured this weekend about issues with Lee Greenwood's song and we got to thinking someone must have parodied it. Any ideas? - Or - Anyone want to start writing now? Especially since Greenwood says he'd glady stand up to defend the USA, but during Vietnam he was a musician in Reno, Nevada. Thanks in advance. Subject: RE: Looking for God Bless the USA parodies From: Willie-O Date: 21 Oct 03 - 09:43 AM No doubt he was boosting morale, consoling lonely showgirls, you know...few are chosen. He sort of parodied it himself, wrote a parallel effort for the Canadian country music market called "God Bless You Canada". I believe that even in the sycophantic Canadian country music radio world it went nowhere. Not really our style. W-O |
Subject: RE: Looking for God Bless the USA parodies From: Blackcatter Date: 21 Oct 03 - 09:56 AM Thanks guest - here's the lyrics from the link above: God(s) Bless the USA Parody by John Harvey If tomorrow all our troops had gone To go and bomb Iraq Our only hope for peace Is a Dick Cheney heart attack I don't like stupid wars It's not hard to explain Conservatives say it's moral But it's really just insane I'm still proud to be an American Though Bush oppresses me I don't want any men to die so very needlessly The Right tells me to shut up Cover ears and block out what I say But there ain't now doubt I love this land God(s) bless the USA After that it's North Korea And I really cannot see Why AWOL boy from Texas Dictates to you and me I'm still proud to be an American Though Bush oppresses me I don't want any men to die so very needlessly The Right tells me to shut up Cover ears and block out what I say But there ain't now doubt I love this land God(s) bless the USA I'm still proud to be an American Though Bush oppresses me I don't want any men to die so very needlessly The Right tells me to shut up Cover ears and block out what I say But there ain't now doubt I love this land God(s) bless the USA |
Subject: RE: Looking for God Bless the USA parodies From: InOBU Date: 21 Oct 03 - 10:20 AM I hope this is not a very great drift, however, I think you may appreciate it, I was giving a concernt in an old folks home, avoiding the more radical of my songs, doing traditional ballads and such, and an old dear asked me to finish with God Bless America. Well, being a plain Quaker, I had the advantage to be able to say, I am sorry that is an oath, and we Quakers don't hold with oaths. She replied, with a note of threat... Well you better learn to! Subject: RE: Looking for God Bless the USA parodies From: Edmund Date: 21 Oct 03 - 06:36 PM These may not be quite on target, but this is the first chance I've ever had to broadcast them except to my secular humanist group when we were lookinmg for a theme song. Godless America (Sorry about that, Irving Berlin) Godless America, land that I love In this season use your reason Do not pray for a light from above. Don't be weary. Test each theory. From the hard facts never roam. Godless America, my home sweet home Godless America, my home sweet home. -------------------------------------------------------------- It's Not Just Your Land (Woody Guthrie might have approved) It's not just your land, it's also my land From the California to the New York Island From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf Stream waters – This land was made for you and me. While you were praying, I heard you saying That you were claiming the whole dang nation. By stick or carrot, you'll have to share it -- This land belong to you and me. As I went walking, I heard you talking. You said the godless they just weren't welcome Yet here there's room in, for the secular human This land was made for you and me. We've forsworn Islam and Shintoism Escaped dominion by the Church of England It is not treason to live by reason. This land was made for you and me. The Declaration of Independence Was signed by many a godless patriot So don't ignore us, join in the chorus – This land was made for you and me. It's not just your land, it's also my land From the California to the New York Island From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf Stream waters – This land was made for you and me. |
Subject: RE: Looking for God Bless the USA parodies From: Blackcatter Date: 21 Oct 03 - 07:16 PM I know how you feel Larry, I'm a Unitarian have have the problem of having an issue of God blessing anything. I was really dismayed at the singing of that song at major league baseball games. |
Subject: RE: Looking for God Bless the USA parodies From: InOBU Date: 21 Oct 03 - 09:17 PM I suppose I should write a version, something like Allah smiles on the USA for events like these... Cheers Larry |
