Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: GUEST Date: 01 Nov 03 - 01:10 PM Now then Peter.. I remember the Crows but only in as much as I think they might have practised in The Broad Oak pub, somewhere in Ashton.Could one of them have been called Francis Delaney??? (Franny). This was about the time of the Hyde folk club at Ewen Fields footy club, which I followed for several years. Anyone remember The Pennine Folk? T'was a damn good club..!! Pennine Folk, I think were Pete Astle, Chris summat(bass), Ken Clark, another guy with a very deep voice and two lasses with brilliant harmonies. Any info on them? N idea re music, though...sorry Regards to all...Spot |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: Harry Basnett Date: 01 Nov 03 - 03:12 PM The Three Crows were residents at the Junction Inn, Mottram...as for Tickawinda - - Jim Schofield who was a member of that group of worthies runs the Cross Keys Folk Club in Uppermill as well as the Station Buffet Bar session at Stalybridge..and I think the Tickawinda album is available on CD. 'Coal Hole Cavalry' was written by Ted Edwards. All the Best...Harry. |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: Cattail Date: 01 Nov 03 - 08:28 PM Hi Peter, Guest, Harry and others out there. I have no information on the Crows, but have fond memories of the Pennines, as I was a member of their club when it was held at the Two Brewers pub on Regent Road in Salford. The band members, (Ash Lawrence, Peter Bowker, Bryan Down and Edward "Ted" Hardy), ran a wonderful club there, always teaching us new songs and encouraging us to sing, the last song of the evening was always "Dirty Old Town" softly sung by all in the room, you could almost have heard the proverbial pin drop, and it quite often almost made you cry it was so lovely. If you're out there lads, thanks so much for giving us so many good nights, good songs and wonderful memories. After such a lovely evening it was usually the six mile walk home to South Manchester as I had no transport at the time, and when they moved to Hyde it was more difficult to get to and I never went there. They did release an album on the Reality label (North Watford, Herts) (No: RY 1003) entitled "Hard Cases". The tracks were. Hard case Come all you fair and tender ladies The tin gee-gee Evening of roses Santianna Dirty old town The dodger The cruel war Carrion crow The gipsy rover The white buck of Epping The leaving of Liverpool I never saw Tickawinda live but have an album of theirs, on the Pennine records label (Pennine Sound Studio, Oldham. No: PSS 153LP) The band members according to the record sleeve are as follows. Kath Richmond, Alison Tulloch, David Birchwood, Jim Schofield, and Clive Gregson. The tracks were: John barleycorn Coalhole cavalry She moves through the fair Old Pendle Young Man Cold and raw The blackleg miner Rosemary Lane A lyke wake dirge The galtee farmer The weary cutters Go your way And the band played waltzing Matilda The "Galtee farmer" together with "young man" are also on a CD called "A Lot of Jolly Good Folk" issued by The National Trust and available from their shops. If anyone would like a track list of this CD I will put it on for you. Sorry for the long post and the waffle but you got the memory juices flowing, so it's all your fault. But thanks for bringing it all back! Cheers to you all. Cattail ! |

I don't know where you're based now but if you're ever in the vicinity you'd be more than welcome at the Open Door Folk club in Chadderton. I'm pretty sure Jim Schofield has his own website...if so a Google search should throw it up. All the Best... Harry Basnett. |

Do those names ring a bell at all...???It would be circa'67. Did they ever record anything?? Sorry Pete - not Crows info but ....its the juices again!!! Regards to all...... Spot |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: GUEST, Cattail (with lost cookie AGAIN!) Date: 02 Nov 03 - 02:50 PM Hi Harry, Peter, Spot, Guest Etc. Just logged on to post this, and yes, you beat me to it. Had to happen didn't it? Anyway I'll get it off quickly before anyone else berates me for my mistake. Thanks again to you all. *** DUFF INFORMATION ALERT *** May I bow my head in shame, and offer you my abject apologies for my last post, (I can only blame it on the fireworks which rattled my two brain cells around for about three hours last night). The band who ran the club at "the Two Brewers" in Salford, and who then went on to run the club at Hyde United football club were NOT the Pennine folk but the FOUR FOLK. All other information is still correct. (I think, *BG*) It's times like these that make you realise that you're not as young as you thought you were, and incidentally, my memories are going back to 1968 - 1971 ish, so maybe the Pennines took over from the Four Folk. after then. Sorry once again for confusing the issue. Cheers to you all Cattail ! P.S. Thanks for your kind offer Harry, but I'm now even further away from your area than I was before, not a terrific distance away, but I'm not a great traveller, (I hate driving these days), and my wife and I were never social animals at the best of times, so we don't tend to get out too much, this may change if we move to a different area of course, but we'll see about that in the next year or so. Cheers Cattail ! |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: Cattail Date: 08 Nov 03 - 08:35 PM Hi to you all, again. I *knew* I had it *somewhere*! I DO have a Pennines disk. (I just couldn't FIND the d%%n thing) Came across it today stuck to another one, (Flamin' labels) Anyway, the sleeve notes say that the band line-up was as follows:- Margaret Whitehead (Lead vocals) Ken Campbell (Vocals + songwriter) Chris Swann (Lead guitar) Frank Clapton (Bass vocals) Pete Astles (Rhythm guitar + tenor vocals) It is on Pennyfarthing records. (Are they still going? Have phone No and address if they are) Album No: PELS 514. Date: 1971 The album was called "Manchester Morning", (all the tracks were written by the pennines), and were as follows:- Side 1 Manchester morning Danny McCann Arrabella Humpty Dan Time was The king comes riding Side 2 Phoenix Don't cry (Don't bow your head) Esmerelda Highland song Eleanor Cavannaugh Gentlemen of fortune Manchester morning (Reprise) This is certainly a fine album, it doesn't say on the sleeve notes if they have made any others, shame if they didn't. Hope this helps, (or just brings back a few more memories). Sorry once again for the previous mistake. Cheers Cattail ! |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: Cattail Date: 09 Nov 03 - 01:45 PM Hi Spot, know exactly what you mean about your last post, been there, done that! I am not set up to do any recording of anything at the moment I'm sorry to say, I badly need to get some of my vinyl on to cd, (if only so I can have a listen myself), but given the size of my house I'm finding it difficult to gather everything into one place so that I can do it, (plus getting my head round the vinyl to cd question). I will have a furthur look at what can be done, and if I can do something for you I will. Leave it with me, and yes, I will keep you informed. Cheers for now. Cattail ! |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: Cattail Date: 09 Nov 03 - 02:09 PM By the way Spot, do you happen to know if Malcome Price was a local lad? (I.E. Manchester, Stockport.) I seem to remember somebody telling me that he and his brother ran the music shop which was in the market place at Stockport, near the church, circa 1972 - 1975 ish. I can't remember it being there for long though. I have a couple of albums, one by Malcome Price and one by The Malcome Price Trio, both nice albums, and seeing them got my curiosity going. Cheers again. Cattail ! |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: mccann Date: 15 Oct 04 - 09:11 AM I was a member of the Malcolm Price Trio foir several years after replacing mandolinist Mick North. By an incredible coincidence I had already bought Mick's pre-war Gibson A50 mandolin from Clifford Essex in Earlham Street London. I still play in a band with banjo and fiddle player John Field who played on the Malcolm Price Trio +one album Way Down Town. Although I never recorded with Malcolm, I was involved in numerous BBC broadcasts with him from the late sixties to the early eighties. He was born, I think, in Sidcup and he now lives in Norway. Roger Churchyard, who also played in the trio, and with whom I played in the bluegrass band Orange Blossom Sound, is still in regular contact with. |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: Bernard Date: 15 Oct 04 - 05:44 PM Please would anyone mentioned above contact me via email, where possible - I've been working on 'Where are they now' ideas for BBC GMR Sounds of Folk, and have so far managed to organise interviews with Ted Edwards and Rosie Hardman - both of which have already been broadcast. I also managed to track down some recordings of a friend who died many years ago, which was really wonderful. We're only concerned with performers who originated (or were based) in the GMR catchment area, though. Where necessary, I can arrange to interview people who knew the performers if they are no longer around. It is better if we have a recording to play, too - as long as it is suitable for broadcast. Click here if you'd like to be involved - live in the studio, via telephone link, or a pre-recorded interview. Alio (Ali O'Brien) is the programme's presenter, and I'm the producer. Laura Hockenhull and Jenny McCormick complete the team. We broadcast on Mondays between 8 and 9 p.m., and you can now listen on DAB or the Internet if you can't receive us on 95.1/104.6 FM. Please get in touch! |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: GUEST,cattail Date: 18 Jan 06 - 01:10 PM Hi Marion and Spot, I went back over the threads the other day and found that this one had reared it's head again, it must have disappeared before I managed to get on the 'cat, which is why I didn't see it at the time I saw your transcript Spot, (Thanks so much for that), and thought I'd have a listen again and see if I could fill in the gaps, (it's so much easier when someone has already had a go at it). So here's my try, I think it's very close, see what you think. THE KING COMES RIDING By THE PENNINES From "Manchester Morning" The former earl of Acquitaine swings and dances in the rain Between the heather and the sky, suspended on a gallows high Above his head the raven cries, descends to peck his royal eyes A bold wind turns him for a while- a broken heart, a rigor mortis smile And when the King comes riding see the hawks rise Sunlight catches the standard he flies Silver of eagles, blood of the rose Now on the shoreline his cavalry jingles into the rivermouth And over the shingle he goes. The widow weeps the castle burns and then the royal army turns Racing the shadows of the dawn to the Holy Isle of Lindisfarne The lord high abbott by his shrine, prepares his treacherous design But in a while he will have been from glories rose to crucifixion seen And when the King etc The mountain wizard casts his spell to summon riders out of Hell But even these will turn and fly and vanish when the King rides by And then across Northumberland, an iron mace swings in his hand With blood to satisfy his need..Plantagenet - a very restless breed. And when the King etc Cheers for now Cattail ! |

Glad you like the corrections, and yes, you had better pull yourself together (imagine you're a pair of curtains:-} SORREEE)and hope your good lady doesn't see this thread. I know what you mean though. Everytime I pull a record out to look at it I see the date on it and think to myself it only seems like a couple of years since I bought it, it usually has 1965 or '70 on it by the way. Don't time fly when your having fun? I don't post a great deal, but I lurk a lot and soak up the great amount of knowledge that abounds on the 'cat, and I try to help where possible with the paltry bits of information that I posess. THANKS TO MAX FOR GIVING US ALL THIS, IT'S APPRECIATED Once again, cheers for now. Cattail ! |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: GUEST,sbroome@tiscali.co.uk Date: 20 Jan 06 - 01:29 PM The Three Crows performed in a number of schools in the evening. They were teachers themselves. Arthur Howard was the lead singer and tamborine, Fran Delaney sang and played mandolin and guitar, John Vale also sang now and again and played a twelve string guitar. They did an LP called "THE THREE CROWS AT THE JUNCTION", I believe they also did "THE THREE CROWS LIVE AT THE JUNCTION" as well but cannot confirm the title. They also produced a tape called "THE THREE CROWS - 25 YEARS ON". I would like to know if they recorded anything else, perhaps someone out there might know. I saw them quite a number of times, and only wish there was some film or video of their performaces which as well as good songs were filled with Lancashire humour. Fran Delaney died a couple of years ago, and I have heard though not confirmed, that Arthur has since died fairly recently. I would be interested to hear from anyone with more up to date info. Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: GUEST,Ray Date: 25 Jan 07 - 01:09 PM I remember the 3 Crows but didn't know them. Of Tickawinda, I knew Alison but didn't know that Clive Gregson was a member. The last I heard of Clive was that hed moved to Nashville. Chris Swann - demon designer of pinball and other gaming machines - joined Cheryl Gibbons and her then partner Rob ? to form Sunwheel. Shortly after a failed single about Red Rum, Rob and Cheryl moved away with Rob's job to Nottingham although they commuted back to run the Sat Night sessions at Stalybridge Station. Unfortunately they didn't survive the next move to London and then Epsom and they split up shortly afterwards. I heard that Cheryl was working at the Kings Head in Islington but that was years ago. Haven't seen any of them in years including Pete Astles and Ken Campbell - Ken used to book the acts for us back in the 70's when we ran a large Cheshire folk club in competition with the one at Poynton. I have a pile of "rare" folk records perhaps Chris could point me at a site which lists their values. Wasn't the "Berwers" run for a time by Tony and Arthur? Arthur lives in Bollington and still intends to be famous one day - he is currently the Mayor's Consort. Tony died in a climbing accidentnearly 30 years ago. Any more names?? |

Subject: RE: The Three Crows folk group From: GUEST,Tony Charnock Date: 29 Dec 07 - 04:14 PM Hi Peter, I've only just found this site. We, my wife, Mave and I, saw the Three Crows at a school in Stalybridge in the 70's, possibly St. Damian's and they were great. Their harmony, comedy and rapport with the audience was superb. We also saw them at the Park Bridge Visitor Centre at Bardsley in Ashton at a folk meeting. I have a tape called "The Three Crows Still Going". All songs arranged by the Crows, Bass & Key boards- Paul Kempster. It was engineered by Paul Kempster & Chris Birchenall. Mixed by Paul & the Crows. Side one:- Bread & Fishes. Three score & ten. Streets of London. Coalhole cavalry. Green fields of France. Dirty old town. Old triangle. Poor childhood, a monologue recited by Fran. Liverpool Lou. Side two:- Come landlord. Derby ram. Sweet 16. Cadgwith anthem. Seth Davy. Ali Bali. Murphy & the bricks. Now I'm easy. Nightingale. Leaving of Liverpool. Goodnight & God bless. We now live on Ellen Vannin, the Isle of Man, so don't get across to often to folk concerts, but we do join in the sing-a-rounds in our local pub. Should you want a copy of the tape, I can try & copy it for you onto another tape. Regards, T. C. |
