....Is it just my computer or is someone else having this problem? :: The words of the person orginating the thread are obscured by the Mudcat Logo, making it difficult, sometimes impossible to read. When I click on the thread topic the logo comes up on the right hand side of the message.... It wouldn't be the first time I've done something wrong, so would appreciate some help. ??? Z.

Strange, but true- this happens to me on my computer at work, but not at home. Home is a pc, work is a G-3. Why does it happen?

Dunno. My computer is an apple mac, one of the old wind up types. I'm anxious to see if anyone else is having the problem, and more importantly, what, if anything, I can do to avoid / correct it.

When there is a short list of people posting to a thread, the logo gets in the way of the first piece of text. As the list gets longer, they push the text down further and the logo fits into the section to the right.

At least, that's how it is on my computer.

G'day,
This happens on one of the computers at work (not mine). I've never bothered to find out but I suspect it's related to screen resolution. The machines I mostly use are set to 1024 by 768.

Cheers,
Alan

Mudcatting at work is a great stress reliever - makes me ever so much more productive.....and besides, I work at home and my boss is a hundred miles away.

Because we can't work at Mudcat?
Because a few of us were born bad, and the rest of us have to work at it to catch up...
Say, Earl, how come you are *NOT* Mudcatting at work? Is it scruples, or accessability? I want you all to know I *NEVER* Mudcat at work...not once.. but that's because I'm a massage therapist (grin).
Blessings,
Barbara

I didn't say I didn't, I was just wondering about everyone else. Like Joe I work at home so I am not always sure when I'm at work and when I'm not. But yes, I confess, I Mudcat at work.

I have the lofty goal as a music teacher of "utilizing technology to enhance the educational process"- so the Mudcat is my favorite resource at work!!!

I've noticed that the "Help Support Mudcat" logo will appear on the right side of my Netscape window (Mac environment) and will obscure text to its left UNLESS my window is wide enough. If I made my window the width of my screen (and I've got a fairly large screen!), then the logo shows only to the right of the text.
My guess is that it's probably got to do with the html coding of the page set-up. Max has probably created a space for the logo using x,y values and tables coding that won't work for people who view Mudcat using narrow windows in thier browsers. Max?

G'day,
Charlie, I think your observation is closely related to mine re screen resolution.

As for mudcatting at work, If the taxpayers of this state don't mind me spending weekends as well as weekdays after midnight marking exams etc., I suppose they won't mind me mudcatting at work occasionally.

Cheers,
Alan

Another thing that happens on the G-3 at work but not at home is if I want to read only the latest entries from a long list on a thread, I click on it but it returns to the top of the list, rather than going to the entry I've clicked. Weird.

Animaterra, that jump to the top is because the file has not finished loading. Watch the numbers at the bottom (how many K shipped) and wait till it says Done before clicking on the last messages.
Possibly your computer at work is slower than home? Or the internet connection takes longer?
Blessings,
Barbara

I work at the Mudcat and I mudcat it when i work. I am nearly certain that mudcating it at work is more valuable to the world and to oneself than the work you are supposed to be doing.

I will look into the problem that originally sparked this thread. I am aware of it and it is not you, it's us.

It would appear the answer to most of your problems is clear.. Put the Mac where it belongs ... the trash can and get IBM compatible.. apart from standing for "It's Being Mended" all seems to work okay with regard to the ole Cat here.
As for should you Mudcat at work or not.. I'm with Max.. the world would be a far better place if we invested more time and effort into music.

I reckon I have the best of all worlds; I Mudcat at work, but I am a folklorist, and the university at which I teach expects me to use the computer for such things. I sit at a terminal with banjo, guitar, and mandolin within arm's reach, and I don't even have to blank the screen if I'm on Mudcat when someone enters my office!

BBJ...sure..:-), you get a bunch of old logs, you chop them into managable size pieces, you mount them on a lathe , spin them at 1200 or so RPM, attack them with chisels & gouges, and TRY to make something pretty and/or useful enough that people will buy it...so you can continue working at home...(and try to stay away from them pictures...*grin*..they DO distract one from the logs...!!)

Well, Max, it's interesting to watch the transition of changes as the evening rolls along. Your changes have been quite subtle, so it's kind of like a "guess what's missing in this picture" game.
I didn't have any problems before, and don't have any problems now, so maybe I'm not the one to ask. Somebody said he had trouble reading his own typing in the "reply to thread" box and wondered how to make that more legible. I can do that for myself with Netscape, but not with MS Internet Explorer. Is that something you can fix on your end? I think that a wider "reply to thread" box and larger typeface within the box would be a boon to us aging males with faltering vision (and maybe others with faltering vision, too????).

I'm beginning to believe that someone could ask for the lyrics to Amazing Grace, and it would end up being a discussion about the Kennedy assassination. I'm pickled tink that my thread afforded folks the opportunity to talk about Mudcatting at work / or not.. but I still have the same problem and apparently the solution is another computer. Now, having said that, I'm going to go watch Law & Order. bye...

Hey, Zorro, turn off the TV and look up! Isn't the fish jumping somewhere else where it doesn't obscure the thread? Max heard, and he's moved stuff. At least it fixes the problem on my screen.
Thanks, Max. By and large I like the changes, tho I had a slight preference for the old search box format. (probably just because it was familiar. Did you grease the machinery too? Feels like maybe threads are loading faster?
Thanks again for moving the fish. It did get in my way, probably because I cut costs by buying small (14") monitors.
Blessings,
Barbara

Hey Barbara,

I didn't mean my question as criticism. I just read it again and it doesn't sound like criticism to me!! It sounded like a question concerning a problem that I was trying to solve.

Zorro, your original post when you started this thread was regarding the location of the Mudcat Logo; how it kept you from reading the thread. Didn't the location of the logo change on your screen last night, Tuesday?
That's all I meant when I said look up. Look at the top of this thread. On my screen, anyway, where the jumping fish logo used to obscure the first lines of text, it no longer does.
So we've been running off on tangents, but while that was happening, Max fixed the problem, at least for me. Did the fish move for you, too?(grin) Blessings,
Barbara

Well at least this thread has solved one problem for me, I now know what the wierd blob above the banjo is supposed to be! When it originally appeared I spent a few minutes trying to imagine it as a badly rendered hand but gave up and I've ignored it since.

Is may be obvious to you US types, but what is the significance of a fish on a banjo?

That particular type of fish is called a catfish, and, in slang, a mudcat.

Actually, Pete, the deepest, darkest meaning of the catfish and the banjo may be evident only to Max. Since he's our host, I guess we'd better humor (humour?) him....
I've hinted a few times that it would be nice if somebody could come up with a symbol that would be suitable for use as an icon. I tried this one, but there's too much detail and it turned out as a green blob when shrunk to icon size - so I went back to using the guitar I stole from Cowpie.
