Subject: The Carnal & The Crane From: Blowzabella Date: 03 Nov 03 - 07:59 PM The New Scorpion Band are touring their Christmas programme 'The Carnal and the Crane' from the end of November, at venues in the south west, one or two in the south east and four dates up north (North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire). It's an (as you'd imagine) amazing mix of midwinter music, from the reflective to the roistering, with seasonal readings and a Mummers Play! Details are at http://www.new-scorpion-band.com Christmas comes but once a year... |
Subject: RE: The Carnal & The Crane From: Noreen Date: 03 Nov 03 - 08:11 PM This newsletter page has tour dates on- or is there a more specific page that I missed? Sounds great, hope I can get to one. |
Subject: RE: The Carnal & The Crane From: Blowzabella Date: 05 Nov 03 - 05:57 PM Noreen - have a look at the recordings page as there is a CD by the same name, which gives a good indication of the material. The show combines music, interspersed with seasonal readings from the writings of Thomas Hardy, Laurie Lee, & c. - and a Christmas Mummers Play. They are incredibly versatile and you an expect to hear 25 instruments plus their five voices - woodwind, brass, stringed instruments (plucked and bowed), free reed and percussion - and have a good laugh into the bargain! Sounds fine by me! |

Subject: RE: The Carnal & The Crane From: GUEST Date: 25 Nov 03 - 07:42 AM What's a carnal? (Just thought I'd ask). |
Subject: RE: The Carnal & The Crane From: GUEST,Val Date: 25 Nov 03 - 08:48 AM It's another name for a crow, I think - the reference is to do with carnivore, cos crows eat carrion. The title song is a conversation between a crow and a crane about the birth of Jesus. |
