Best festival I ever played at. Fond memories of being sprayed on stage with "Off" to shift the carpet of mosquitos off my head and back. Mozzie bites gave me poisoned ankles and I went to the local doctor who examined me.
"I understand you're playing our festival" he said.
"Yes"
"Then you are our guest. There will be no charge for treatment"
Four days later we pranged our hire car and needed a door straightened. Garage refused payment.
Ah...Canada!

I did mpt know swallos tail had a fiddler, but the other members were brothers Jim and Jeff Bell. Both great singers and musicians. I am sorry they never formed another band.

Lovely festival, and I remember seeing and enjoing Starboard side.I sing Jim Pitmans "Sailing Today" when I get nostalgia on me. It ended many evenings at Poynton Folk Centre!

Guest 11:10. Swallowtail disbanded, but at least two of the musicians went on to excel in the business. Greg Simm is the well-known (in NS, anyway) guitar player. Am racking aging brain for name of the composer, most well known of the group. The fiddler, Colin Cameron, my very good friend, is also a stained glass artist (Cailean's Glassworks), and has mostly done that over the years. But he can still fiddle up a storm!

My vote for lovliest in Nova Scotia is Green Bay, not far from Lunenburg. But lets face it, there are only three ugly towna in NS, IMHO. But as for the festival . It is great and not to be missed by any lover of folk.

Puts me in mind of St Martins, St Andrews, North Head on Grand Manan, Baddeck AND Margaree, Sackville, Parrsboro, and the postcard towns of PEI too numerous to mention.

I'd want to go there right now if everything wasn't so friggin frozen. That, I can get right here in Ontario and the skiing is better.

Well now. It is a very beautiful town but the nicest spot in the Maritimes is Margaree. Everyone knows that. Heh heh!
Tanglefoot is one of the few groups to play that venue in consecutive years.

Terry Young, from the band Tanglefoot has written a beautiful song about the festival, called Lunenberg Skies. It's available on his solo album and also Tanglefoot's most recent release, Dances Like Flames. Both c.d.s are excellent, by the by.

I played that one in '98. Great people and one of the few Folk Festivals that's still "Folk".

Guest,meself: Thank you! So at least one of them came from Lueneburg near Hamburg and created the name Lunenburg. The original town is situated in region with absolutely no agriculture possible in those days. But the town itself became rich because of saltworks.

They came from Germany, anyway. The British wanted Protestant settlers who could handle the demands of life in Nova Scotia at the time, and I guess they didn't have enough suitable Brits willing and able to go ...

who knows about the origen of the name Lunenburg? Did early settlers come from Lueneburg, Germany? Please tell me, although this question has nothing to do with the festival in question.

As i was reading below, i noticed a lot of people where looking for Jim Pittman or mentioned something about him. Jim Pittman died of cancer in December of 1996. He played vocals, harmonica, & spoons in the band Starb'ard Side. He comes from Newfoundland, and so does the band name. Jim Pittman was an amazing person, for I have had the time to get to know him. He was also knows as the Singing Cook. Jim is missed very much now, & will be forever, for his legacey will live on. Rest in peace & if I may quote him..."May your cod end always be full".

Pittman is sadly missed. He was a victim of cancer. I remember a CBC radio interview he gave just before he passed away. It was incredible and I only hope I'm that ready to go when my time is up.

I never made it to this festival yet, but I do know tha Kevin Evans and Brian Doherty played there in it's early years. I'm sure that they could give you an answer.

I assume your talking about Jim Pittman "The Singing Cook" and the group Starb'ard Side.

If you are I'm sad to say Jim passed on in late 96. The group did record one self titled album with CBC Halifax,Nova Scotia.

The remaining four members of the group have been active but it has been off and on. Watch the program for Lunenburg 2004 when they start to post. I hear the lads may try and get a slot.
