(apparently the song was not as ungrammatical as I recalled.)

I liked this song at age 4 because it was one of the few songs on the radio that I could understand.

Subject: Lyr Add: HOW DO YOU DO (Happiness Boys/Jones&Hare)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 01 Sep 11 - 05:05 PM

You can hear this version at The Internet Archive:

HOW DO YOU DO?
As sung by Billy Jones & Ernest Hare (The Happiness Boys)

1. How do you do, ev'rybody? How do you do?
How do you do, ev'rybody? How are you?
We are here, we must confess,
Just to bring you happiness.
Hope we'll please you, more or less.
How do you do?
How do you do?
How do you do?
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?
Billy Jones and Ernie Hare
Wish to sing to you out there:
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?

2. How do you do, Billy Jones? How do you do? (Oh, pretty good.)
How do you do, Ernie Hare? How do you do? (Pretty fair.)
Bill, I hope you like this song.
Well I hope it's not too long.
Am I right? No, you're wrong.
How do you do?
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?
Well, I'm glad you're nearly done.
Why, I've only just begun.
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?

3. How do you do, ev'rybody? How do you do?
How do you do, ev'rybody? How are you?
When the skies are kinda gray
And you're feeling just that way,
Ain't it great to hear folks say,
"How do you do?"
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?
So from Maine up to Alaska,
Here is what we want to ask ya:
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?

4. How do you do, old timers? How do you do? (Hello, old timers.)
How do you do, old timers? How are you? (How are ya? How are ya?)
You remember way back when
Girls were girls and men were men?
It's so different now from then.
How do you do?
How do you do?
How do you do?
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?
Even grandmas bob their hair.
They also smoke, and learn to swear.
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?

5. How do you do, John Chinaman? How do you do? (Hello, John.)
How do you do, John Chinaman? How are you? (Howee, Johnny.)
Runee laundry, eat chow mein,
Chopee, doee ev'rything.
Glad you like-ee hear us swing.
How do you do?
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?
[Rest of the verse is spoken in pseudo-Chinese gibberish.]*

6. How do you do, Mister Rooster? How do you do?
How do you do, Mister Tin(?)? How are you?
Can you tell us Mister Tin(?),
When will eggs come down again?
You haven't laid since Lord knows when.
How do you do?
How do you do?
How do you do?
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?
Though you think you're getting by,
Soon you'll be a chicken pie.
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?

7. Goodbye, Edison fans. Goodbye.
Goodbye, Edison fans. Goodbye.
Billy and Ernie are nearly through
Singin' this little song to you.
Now we'll say goodbye to you.
How do you do?
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?
Hope you liked this little song.
Now it's time to say, "So long."
So goodbye-dy, bye-dy, bye-dy, bye-dy, bye.
Goodbye!

[* In my opinion, verse 5—the "John Chinaman" verse—is irredeemably offensive and should be omitted from any future performance. I have provided it for historical reasons only.]

Chicago : Ted Browne Music Co. Inc., c1924.

1. How do you do, ev'rybody? How do you do?

And you're feeling just that way,
Ain't it great to hear folks say,
"How do you do?"

CHORUS 1: How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?
So from Maine up to Alaska,
Here is what we want to ask ya:
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?

2. How do you do, old timers? How do you do?
How do you do, old timers? How are you?
You remember way back when
Girls were girls and men were men.
It's so different now from then.
How do you do?

CHORUS 2: How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you do? (How do you do?)
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?
Now even grandmas bob their hair,
Smoke cigarettes, and learn to swear.
How do you doodle, doodle, doodle, doodle do?

EXTRA VERSES AND CHORUSES:

3. How do you do, Rudolph Valentino, etc.
Tho' they've never heard you speak,
All the girls go every week
Just to see their darling sheik.
How do you do?

How do you do, etc.
Now, it's not your face that's fair;
It's the way you comb your hair.
How do you do, etc.

4. How do you do, Mister Rooster, etc.
Can you tell me, Missus Hen,
When will eggs come down again?
You haven't laid eggs since Lord knows when.
How do you do?

How do you do, etc.
Though you think you're getting by,
You're going to be a chicken pie.
How do you do, etc.

5. How do you do, society folks, etc.
Every year you have a craze
That just lasts a few short days,
But here's one I'll bet that stays:
How do you do?

How do you do, etc.
So forget your old Mah Jong
And learn this crazy little song:
How do you do, etc.

6. How do you do, radio friends, etc.
Now you've heard us sing a lot
But you liked this "Tommy rot."
Some was good and some was not.
How do you do?

How do you do, etc.
Just who wrote it, we've forgotten,
But it's written rotten, rotten.
How do you do, etc.

7. How do you do, Mister Darrow, etc.
How do you do, Tennessee, etc.
"Monkey Trials" we cannot see,
But we read of them with glee,
And we care not what it be.
How do you do?

How do you do, etc.
We have not the slightest fear
For we all have brothers here.
How do you do, etc.

7. How do you do, old Broadway, etc.
I have been to all your shows,
Sat down in the baldhead rows.
The girls are pretty, I suppose.
How do you do?

How do you do, etc.
But I felt so out of place,
I couldn't look them in the face.
How do you do, etc.

8. A: How do you do, etc.
B: How do you do, etc.
A: Now, I hope you'll like this song.
B: Well, I hope it's not too long.
Am I right?
A: No, you are wrong.
How do you do?

Both: How do you do? How do you do?
How do you doodle, etc.
B: Well, I'm glad you're nearly done.
A: Why, I've only just begun.
Both: How do you doodle, etc.

9. How do you do, Andy Gump, etc.
How is Chester? How is Min?
How's the whiskers on your chin,
Growing out our growing in?
How do you do?

How do you do, etc.
In the papers you can bet,
You're the biggest laugh we get.
How do you do, etc.

The version I learned ack in the 1930s was like this

How do you do Andy Gump how do you do
How do you do Andy Gump How are you
How is Chester how is Min how's the whiskers on your chin
Growing out or growing in
How do you do Andy Gump How do you do

Of course then you could add your own versions and someone else add their version and the song would last for at leasy 30 minutes and each verse would be different

That is certainly a far more impressive tune than the major-key one my father used, but it does appear to be related. I was guessing that what he sang was from a radio show; much of his material was.

Thank you, Q!

Subject: Lyr. Add: How Do You Do, Ev'rybody? (spiritual)
From: Q (Frank Staplin)
Date: 08 Aug 07 - 03:31 PM

"How Do You Do" has been an opening, greeting song used by stage performers, gospel preachers and speakers for a long time; sheet music of the tune goes back to the Civil War period.

On radio during the 1930s, "The Happiness Boys," Billy Jones and Ernie Hare, used it to open their very popular broadcasts (a cd is available).

A version of "How Do You Do, Everybody, How Do You Do" was composed by Cal DeVoll (b. 1886) and used to open Shriner meets.

The song was used as an opening greeting shout at gospel meets, both Black and White. Harry Belafonte sang a spiritual version in his recording, "The Long Road to Freedom," Buddha Records (BMG).
As a spiritual, it was collected by Ballanta-Taylor, "St. Helena Island Spirituals," p. 75, as "How Yo' Do Believer, How yo' Do Today.
There are no records, but it is speculated that the song originated as a ring shout.

Lyr. Add: HOW DO YOU DO, EV'RYBODY
Greeting Shout

How do you do, ev'rybody, how do you do?
How do you do, ev'rybody, how do you do?
I don't come to worry your patience.
I just come to bring salvation.
How do you do, ev'rybody, how do you do?

How do you do' my dear brethren, how do you do?
How do you do, my dear brethren, how do you do?
I don't come to worry your patience.
I just come to bring salvation.
How do you do, ev'rybody, how do you do?

How do you do, my dear sistren, how do you do?
etc.

How do you do, my dear mother, how do you do?
etc.

How do you do, my dear father, how do you do?
etc.

How do you do, my good member, how do you do?

AMG - All Music Guide lists 3 Carter Family albums on the Arhoolie label called "On Border Radio" Vols. 1, 2, and 3. Each volume has several tracks designated "Theme." I have listened to sound samples of several of these (at Barnes&Noble) and it seems they are always using "Keep on the Sunny Side" as their theme.

Wilco48 was looking for the Guthrie song, which, if I recall correctly, was issued on a cassette of songs he wrote for his children, along with a book of lyrics with watercolor illustrations he had done, that was published posthumously.

However, I learned a version of the earlier song as a Mother Goose Rhyme, with which my grandmother would greet me (and all her grandchildren), shaking hands vigorously on the "How do you do?" part.

The Mother Goose version (as my grandmother sang it) went like this:

Misty, moisty morning, and cloudy was the weather
Along came an old man, all dressed in leather.
He began to compliment,
and I began to grin.
"How do you do, and how do you do, and how do you do again?"

I credit that ritual with two things: teaching me how to shake hands on greeting, and a love of misty moisty mornings.

Thanks, Josie, wherever you are!

Subject: Lyr Add: HOWJADOO (Woody Guthrie)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 13 Nov 03 - 09:48 AM

Here's Woody Guthrie's song, copied from John McCutcheon's website: (Obviously, it's a kids' song.)

HOWJADOO
(Woody Guthrie)

You stick out your little hand
To every woman, kid and man.
You say, "Hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo, howjadoo!"
You say, "Hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo!"

CHORUS: Howjee, hojee, heejee, hijee,
Howjee, dojee, doojee, dijee,
Howjee, hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo, howjadoo,
Howjee, hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo.

On my sidewalk, on my street,
To every person that you meet,
You say, "Hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo, howjadoo!"
You say, "Hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo!" CHORUS

I feel glad and you feel good.
We brighten up our neighborhood.
We say, "Hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo, howjadoo!"
We say, "Hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo!" CHORUS

[Extra verse by John McCutcheon:]
From right here in our town,
To the whole wide world around,
We say, "Hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo, howjadoo!"
We say, "Hojee, heejee, hijee, howjadoo!" CHORUS

From: vectis

Is this it?

ONE MISTY MOISTY MORNING

"How d' you do and how d' you do and how d' you do again"

One misty moisty morning, when cloudy was the weather,
I met a withered old man a-clothed all in leather,
He was clothed all in leather with a cap beneath his chin, singing

This rustic was a treasure as on his way he hide
And with a leather bottle fast buckled by his side
He wore no shirt upon his back with wool unto his skin, singing

He went a little further and there he met a maid
A-goin' a-milking, a-milking sir she said
Then he began to compliment and she began to sing, singing

This maid, her name was Dolly, dressed in a gown of grey
I being somewhat jolly, persuaded her to stay
And straight I fell a-courting her in hopes her love to win, singing

I having time and leisure, I spent a vacant hour
A-telling of my treasure while sitting in the bower
With many kind embraces I stroked her double chin, singing

I said that we should married be and she would be my bride
And along we should not tarry and twenty things beside
I'll plough and sow and reap and mow and you shall sit and spin, singing

Her parents then consented, all parties were agreed
Her portion thirty shillings, we married were with speed
Then Will, the piper, he did play, while others dance and sing, singing

Then lusty rovin' robin with many damsels gay
To drive and roam to dawning to celebrate the day
And when they met together, their caps they off did fling, singing

Last Saturday night, at the Carter Fold in Virginia, Joe Carter opened the show with a song that he said was very old. The crowd was so loud that I couldn't hear all of it. But, it repeated "How do you do?. Any ideas. It's not the same song as the Leadbelly "Good Morning Blues."

Thanks!!!!
