Just to say that I'll be running the first section of singaround starting at 12 noon in Trefusis - get there early ! For anyone not familiar with CSH, there is an excellent bar serving a good pint of Greene King at a very reasonable price.

I'm OK, I've got a free ticket, but Linda was hoping to buy one on the door. Oh well at least it's going to be well supported. I must admit that I'm not sure about how suitable the room Trefusis is going to be for a singaround - It's rather large and the accoustics aren't the best - Storrow is a much better room for singing in - the bar's even better !

Have just spoken to CSH - all the advance tickets are sold, but they are holding back a stock for sale at the door on Saturday - so get there early for the singarounds which start at 11am. There is a full programme on the EFDSS Website.

I think that one of the tracks on the record came from a recording that I made of Fred at the club that (the late) Isobel Sutherland used to run at "The Junction Inn" Groombridge in the late 70s. I'd sorted out a series of gigs for him and he was staying with myself and Sheila Finn. On the way to the gig, we passed a field full of un-shorn sheep which worried Fred greatly. "Oooh they should've bin sheared by now, 'specially down 'ere - they'll git the maggits". He wanted us to stop the car so that he could tell the owner - and I think he would have been prepared to shear them himself.

While he was staying with us, we told him that he could use the bath anytime he wanted. "Ooh", he said, "I don't hold with baths - reckons they weakens yer - but I have a good strip wash once a week if I need it or not".

Hi Guest, I'm glad somebody listens to Resonance 104.4, Just enjoyed Reg's show myself.

For those who may have missed it. It is repeated on Sunday at 15.30 GMT, according to their web site, although last Sunday they rang me at 15.20 trying to find a copy of my last Thursday's show (it seems the engineer may have forgotten to make a copy, hopefully Reg has sorted it today). One of the problems of Live Radio.

Dave B

If I get there early enough for a daytime ticket. I've delayed buying since we have friends coming from the Lakes and I wasn't sure if I'd make the whole day or just day or evening. Anyway I intend to arrive at door opening 10.30 so hopefully see you in the singaround.

Otherwise I'll have to be the Posh Band's roadie ;-)

The day turned out to be a truly fitting tribute to Fred, every minute filled with excellent music and fond, hilarious reminiscing.

As always with these sort of gatherings, it was not without pleasant surprises. Somehow I had missed out until yesterday on the wondrous solo voice of Graham O'Callaghan, knowing of him only as a member of Jinks Stack.

This amazing revelation alone was worth the entrance price - that and rediscovering Carole Pegg, fiddlesinging as well as ever after all this time.

What did the many other Mudcatters there enjoy?

What a wonderful day.
For both of the concerts I felt that I didn't dare leave myseat in case I missed something.
Dad to see Waterson Carthy without Eliza - I hope she recovers soon, but on the other hand it was great to hear Mike singing again.
The Wilsons were just stunning. When they sang Big Steamers, I thought "it just can't get any better than this".
If only I hadn't managed to spill a cup of coffee over my hand it would have been perfect. Oh, and the train journey home was a nightmare, but somehow it didn't matter.

Linda and I had a great day - the singarounds were great as were the concerts. Saw a lot of old friends and met both Countess Richard and Watson. Also found out that they've used no less than four of my recordings on the second one of the CDs - I think they're tracks 4-7 - looking forward to hearing them when the CD becomes available.

Hi to those lucky people,

I wish I had gone - but - Carols come first.

A Fred story.

Many years ago we in Hull organised a "do" to raise money for the families of the three trawlers which went down in rapid succession and about which Frankie Armstrong wrote so eloquently.

Top of the bill was Bob Roberts and second was Fred. We had bought some beer for the singers who had given their services the remnants of which got taken back to Rita (R.I.P) Jewitt's house where Fred and Bob were staying. We didn't have enough for everyone and so the botles were being passed around. Gradually Fred fell asleep. As the next bottle came around Bob passed it to Fred and Fred took a drink and passed it on.

All without waking up I swear!!

(And Rita was the only person I ever met who persuaded Fred to take his boots off).

Regards,

Dave

Sounds like it was a brilliant day from all that I have heard; unfortunately some of us couldn't get out of working. However, a Fred story that I should have sent of when they were being requested last April.
It was at the National Festival in 1991 and at the end of the Family Barn Dance people were asking where was Fred to sing the final song. The question was answered as we went from the main hall into the bar where Fred was seated underneath the dart board singing "Rose Of Allendale". As we congregated around the door in silence our youngest one who was three at that time wandered off and stood directly in front of Fred. As we froze with embarrassment, expecting to be banished from the National for life, Fred simply took both of his hands in his own and carried on singing. There was then a flurry of activity as many of the crowd attempted to get out their cameras for this shot only for our daughter, some six years older and sensing our initial plight rushed across to retrieve him to the collective groans of the aspiring photographers. I often wonder if anyone actually got a photograph them both, since it was neither posed or contrived, just a natural occurance; as well as a wonderful memory of a great singer and great character.

It was a most enjoyable day. The Wilsons were my highlight, oh and Paul Burgess's song about the Rugby cup final that he'd written on the tube on the way there. It was to the tune of Dido bendigo!

The words to 'that song' were passed to me by Richard Arrowsmith on Sunday night and in the spirit of reconcilliation (and to stop you lot whinging on about your best victory in 30 odd years) I sang it last night and then passed the words on to the landlord of Fagans, Tom Boulding a confirmed Rugby fan and ex player.

Hallo to anyone out there
This is my first mudcat missive. It was great to see so many old friends at the do and an honour to be part of the Shropshire party ,since we moved up here last year we seem to have been adopted.
My thanks to all our Shropshire friends for their company on the coach and at CSH.
I am sure you will be pleased to know that Packie Manus Byrne is now out of hospital and feeling much better.
For me The Wilsons were definitely the highlight, plus the bar sessions.

Dear Anne,
Yes, Elsie is still in harness although she has had a deal of trouble with her knees and circulation and now has bar staff to do the music nights and any other occasions that call for dashing around between the two bars. We shall be celebrating her 30th year as the licencee this Dec. and I expect to see Dennis there as per usual. Should you be doing any clubs around our neck of the woods check with David to see what our schedule for "Elsie`s" is like for the year (01732 762224). Sadly we lost Mike some years back but Iris Bishop now keeps us in order and her accompaniment and ideas are a revelation. Anyway I shall remember you to David and Tony and once they have pulled theirselves together I know they would want me to pass on their fondest wishes. As you recall, we shall be presenting the usual fun and frolics at the Christmas Night with "The Cowden Pounders" mumming play on Dec.20
                                     All Our Best To You,
                                             John

Sorry, not strictly on topic save to say that sadly we couldn't make it to Fred's 'do' but our thoughts were with you all...sounds like a great occasion.

No, John, what I wanted to find out is when exactly is Elsie's anniversary...I know Bob Copper would like to know but so would I, having spent a great deal of time around Markbeech, Horshoe Green and Cowden, for my mum's family come from there. Indeed, and it makes me feel very old to say this, 'Annie's' (as it was known then) is the first pub I was taken into as a babe in arms circa 1949. This clearly was instrumental in the formation of a habit which has proved remarkably difficult to break!
