I remember singing this with a friend in 1973 but can only remember snatchs such as "we met at a garden fete somewhere near Harrogate, we fell in love at first sight". Can anybody help with the rest?

Thanks.

Gosh, that's a blast from the past. I don't have the words, but I think it was written by Rowe (Pr. Rowee according to the singer I heard sing it around 1975) & Clark. I heard it performed by 'Tim & Neil', a couple of lads from around Ashton-u-Lyne who used to 'do' the Manchester Folk Club circuit. Neil used to dance with Saddleworth Morris (as I used to), but I'm colpletely out of contact with them now.

Good luck with your search.

John

I have it on a CD by the Fraser sisters - I'll hunt it out and see what I can do. Keep reminding me!

Yorkshire Romance
C J Rowe

The postmans no letter
I thought I would get a reply cos ones long overdo
And I fondly remember a year last September
Our Yorkshire Romance for two

We met at a garden fete somewhere near Harrogate
I fell in love at first sight
A weekend Ripley and an evening in Shipley
And everything seemed to be right

The weather was dull when we visited Hull
Which perhaps put a damper on things
So we pushed on to Brid where we wasted ten quid
On the sunshine the sand and the swings

We visited briefly your Auntie in Keigthley
Where I didn't know what to say
And I laughed when you slipped on a banana skin in Skipton
Perhaps that's where things went astray

You handled me cleverly driving to Beverley
And you continued to act
Most wisely and shyly through Guisley and Filey
Declining suggestions with tact

Oh I feel such a fool for what happened in Goole
But believe me I did what I could
And I dare say your Mother feels that day in Huddersfield
I didn't act as I should

But you could not alas afford travelling to Castleford
Every weekend to me Mums
So now you are singly residing in Bingley
Just taking life as it comes

Thanks everyone.

Note to John J. It was with a friend called Neil from around Lancashire way that I sang it too during our University days - sounds like the same guy to me! I too have lost touch.

Neil did a degree in Biochemistry I think, but I don't know where. Last I heard he was married to a singer with a lovely voice, but I can't remember her name...I'm getting old!

Cheers,

John

Weird to see this posting.!!
Yes indeed, the song was recorded by The Fraser Sisters on their 2nd CD. (I'm the Sister playing guitar...!)
Nigel Chippindale came across the song in the early '80s and it quickly became part of our band's repertoire (ERIC)
Mind you, try singing it in Belgium...don't think they quite understand!

This song is a veritable travelogue. It's corny, but it brings back great memories of my time in Yorkshire last year. I wish my sweetie had been there with me. It's a lovely place.
Couldn't they fit Whitby into the song somehow?

How about this then Joe:

It wasn't too far for a day-trip to Scarborough
But it rained hard for most of the day.
It stopped for a bit by the harbour in Whitby
But we found we had nothing to say.
