Subject: Live performances on the web?
From: Strupag

I often listen to web radio. I have often wondered are there any sites which cover live performances or concerts.
I did know of one such occasion when a concert on Skye was broadcast via Paltalk.
In order to listen,I had to subscribe to Paltalk and the sound quality was much inferior to the average streamed radio station. In addition, I found that Paltalk tried to take command of my computer. Anyone know of other live performances that use a less intrusive site?
I have always thought, for example if Eric Bogle were performing in a small Queensland venu, or if Vin Garbut was playing at his local, it would great to hear this type of thing live.

I'm interested: How did Paltalk attempt to take command of your computer?

Just popups? That I understand. I got tired of them, and now pay for the next higher grade service, to eliminate them.   Popups are a pain in the neck but wouldn't (in my experience) bother the sound.

Otherwise, I don't understand what you'd see as attempting to take command of the user's computer.

Kennedy Center Millenium Stage, audio and video. Do a search here.... filter for CONCERT and you will find an online concerts thread.

Dave, after loading Paltalk I did get a load more popups but worse that, the site configured my computer so that when I switched it on it went straight in to Paltalk. I know that I could get rid of that by removing it from startup but it was at a time when I was being besieged by popups from other sources and paranoia was setting in. Did you not do a show on paltalk a few months ago. I do seem to remember one mucatter thread about that but it was at the peak of my paranoia. In addition to all the popups( which Spybot now prevents)I was blasted by the blaster worm and then tricked into loading the SVEN worm so I did not listen
I might just try again if one was being broadcast.

Thanks artbrooks-- the old thread has extensive description of the Millenium resources. Their database is slow and finicky.

Strupag:

Now I understand (at least in part) what you meant by "take over". Yes, Paltalk wants to start itself up on mine, too, whenever I reboot. That's not normally a problem for me, though, because my computer is left on 24/7.

And yes, I did a full-hour concert back in the HearMe days, as part of a Mudcat concert series. Then more recently I was recruited to do a two-hour concert, on Paltalk this time. I thought I had arranged with another musician to share that one, but for some reason he didn't show up, so I sang for 45 minutes or so while the organizer scurried around, finally coming back with two other musicians, who took over and did their thing for a while, and then I resumed and sang for maybe another 25 minutes or half an hour.

All you have to do is right click the paltalk icon and check manual start, and paltalk will not start up when you start your computer. I use paltalk on a regular basis (and enjoy DaveO's peformances immensely). I have never seen a group complain about paltalk like mudcat does. It is simply not that difficult.

dwditty....that is me everywhere....   www.dwditty.com too. I am usually in the live rooms or the blues room. For those interested, there is a really nice acoustic blues room on Sunday nights - I would guess around 9PM mudcat time. Occasionally I open my room - DW's coffeehouse. BTW, it takes about 45 seconds to set up a room. Hint: if you say no to cams during the room set up, it seems to keep thinks focused more on the music,

Oh, boy, when WAS my HearMe concert? It was in October of whatever the last full year of HearMe was, or at least the last full year that the Mudcat crowd hung out there.   About four years ago, I think.

I just MIGHT have (somewhere in this mess) a tape of that concert. I know I made one, and sold a few to Mudcatters. I think I still have a copy around. I'll look, Laurel.

I'm about two-thirds done with recording for my CD, and hope to have it out by the end of the year. 23 songs, as I recall the count, about half with guitar, the rest unaccompanied or with banjo. The name of it will be Uncle DaveO Sings: The Real Story. I have the insert and the printed face for the CD designed already, at Mixonic. I expect to sell it for the same price I asked for the concert tape, $12 ppd. No way I'll ever sell enough to cover the costs at that rate, but that's all right; it's a labor of love (not to mention ego).

OK guys, it just looks like that I was going through a bad time in my relationship with my computer when I first tried. I have got most of my viral problems sorted out so I'll give Paltalk another go.
Thanks for your input and best luck with your new CD Dave.
Any Paltalk performances of it's content?

Laurel:
If you're asking about the concert that the organizer went out and got last-minute help, I guess it was two years ago now.

Strupag:

Thanx fer the good wishes on the CD.

Performances on Paltalk of its content? Well, all of the songs on the CD are among my current repertoire, and I sing them (or others) in the "live" rooms on Paltalk when I'm there. Most commonly when I'm on it will be in a room called "Live" with Lilfox and Friends, just because it is open almost every day and night, and it is likely to be near the top of the list because people come and stay. I'll be going to that room as soon as I finish this post. I'll probably be there most of the afternoon, it now being 12:25 p.m. my time.

If you're asking whether I have any concerts scheduled coming up, no, I don't.

In case you check here instead of the other thread.

Strup, here are a few tips for paltalk:

1. If you are going to be there often, the fee (under $30 a year) is well worth it if for no other reason than to get rid of the popups.

2. When you open the groups window, be sure to check the "SHow Adult Rooms" (provided you are over 18!) Among the obvious things, being an "adult" rooms means that those in ENgland can sing about what we call roosters in the US.

3. Look at the list of music rooms, and try a bunch. The live rooms are just that, and while there is certainly a wide range, there is some wonderful music that happens there. I like the blues rooms occasionally, and, while they like live music, they mostly play what I call "testosterone" blues...loud, long guitar solos, etc. There is an acoustic blues room that opens around 9 mudcat time on Sunday eves that I really enjoy....lots of recordings of delta and other country blues. They are very welcoming to those playing live in this genre as well....one of my favorites. Do you like accordian music...there is often a room called Accordians of the world where some really nice people gather. How about native american music....beautiful flute and drum music...very relaxing. The point is, poke around. You will likely wind up with some new friends.

4. Do you have a CD? Let them know when you play in the rooms. Most will like to visit your site if you post the url after you sing. I have sold CD's in England, Germany, Australia, NZ, and all over the US and Canada from playing on pal.

5. Should you decide to open and run a room, decide what you want it to be, set the tone, and stick to it. If you want it to be acoustic or Celtic or however you describe it, set that up in the room greeting. If someone plays a song that is out of place, politely tell them and they will find another place with no hard feelings. If someone jumps the mic, you can "red dot" them so they cannot do so. If anyone behaves contrary to your wishes, simply bounce them from the room. You will usually be cheered by the others as they will likely be just as offended as you. Just think - poof and a heckler is gone...

6. If you find anything in the music rooms that is distasteful (and there is some to be sure), simply ignore it or find another room. I see more incidents where one person tries to change how another thinks. Not much different than on mudcat occasionally.

7. You can add pals to your list so that when you go on you can see if any of them are on. Feel free to add dwditty and I will show you around. Maybe we enjoy the same kind of music, maybe not. You can message people....block people from messaging you....and lots in between. Right click somebody's name and you will see the options.

I enjoy paltalk...not everyone does. I suggest that people give it a try, but almost no one I tell about it does.

see you on pal.
