Subject: Patrick Sky Information From: Peter T. Date: 29 Nov 03 - 03:03 PM There have been a number of threads about Patrick Sky songs, but none of them with much information about him (and nothing obvious on the Net). I have just picked up his old Vanguard album, but know nothing about him, except that he was a Phil Ochs kind of singer (I seemed to have missed him in the 60s.) yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Patrick Sky Information From: Peace Date: 29 Nov 03 - 04:39 PM Patrick is part Irish and part Native North American--or whatever the politically acceptable term is today. He still lives in NC, and he is still one of the better songwriters ever to come down the pipe. He is one of the most outrageous people I ever met in my life, and I like him very much. That man can tell jokes well, play guitar with the best of 'em, and write songs that get to the core of a person. I spoke with him about six months ago, and he still has a way with words. It was Pat who actually built a 'guitoilet' and hung it on the wall of his apartment in NYC in the sixties. Jaysus, what a guy. And Patrick, if you ever read what I have written here, please remit a minimum of $50 American, and I'll buy the beer. Bruce Murdoch. |
Subject: RE: Patrick Sky Information From: Peace Date: 29 Nov 03 - 04:49 PM PS You can google the name "Patrick Sky" and get to various web sites to do with him. |
Subject: RE: Patrick Sky Information From: GUEST,pdq Date: 29 Nov 03 - 07:05 PM Dec 2 appears to be Patrick Sky's birthday. Maybe we can declare it Patrick Sky Day and get him to participate in the Mudcat Forum. If he has as great a sense of humor like his ol' bud Murdoch, there is a place waiting for him. Big time. |

Subject: RE: Patrick Sky Information From: Amos Date: 01 Dec 03 - 08:25 AM b. 2 October 1940, Live Oak Gardens, nr. Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Sky's folksinging career flourished upon meeting fellow Native American Buffy Sainte-Marie. They toured together for three years, eventually arriving in New York's Greenwich Village during the early 60s. Sky's own recordings followed his appearance on Buffy's early work and one of his songs, "Many A Mile", became the title track to her second album. Sky's debut featured both original songs and traditional material, a feature continued on his second collection. Sky was also actively involved in assisting the recently "rediscovered" Mississippi John Hurt and his guitar work can be heard on several of the veteran bluesman's 60s sessions. It was not until 1968 that Sky released a third album, since when his recordings have been sporadic, partly through choice and partly because of the uncompromising nature of his later compositions. Unhappy with modern music, Sky has since restricted his performances to traditional and small-scale venues. Here is a picture of the gentleman. Discography: Private Sky (Vanguard 1965)***, A Harvest Of Gentle Clang (Vanguard 1966)***, Reality Is Bad Enough (1968)**, Photographs (1969)***, Songs That Made America Famous (1973)***, Two Steps Forward One Step Back (1976)***. Subject: RE: Patrick Sky Information From: PoppaGator Date: 01 Dec 03 - 04:48 PM Had no idea Patrick Sky was a founder of Green Linnet records, and learned this fact only by following the above link, and reading the text as well as checking out the picture. I'm posting this to make this interesting development more visible to all. |
Subject: RE: Patrick Sky Information From: Peace Date: 02 Dec 03 - 10:46 AM Story Pat told to me way back. He and Tom (last name left out on purpose) went out for a few beers. Well, maybe more than a few. They stumbled by chance into a gay bar (this was in the very early 70s), sat down and ordered. THEN, they noticed lotsa guys dancing with each other and realized where they were. At one point the music stopped and Tom said in a loud, clear voice, "Jesus, Pat, don't these f#####g fa###ts make ya sick?" The place went absolutely silent--we're talkin' hear a wee tiny, small pin drop. Pat, whose mind musta been goin' at close to warp speed drawled back, "Nah, Tom, not if ya don't eat too many!" The place cracked up and they left alive. |
Subject: RE: Patrick Sky Information From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 02 Dec 03 - 11:01 AM I saw him perform at the Philadelphia Folk Festival many, many years ago. He, Tom Paxton, and several others whose names I do not remember did several songs from Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. I've been a fan of Pat, Tom, and Gilbert & Sullivan ever since. |
Subject: RE: Patrick Sky Information From: Peace Date: 02 Dec 03 - 12:06 PM Reading GUEST,Arkie's post, I will state that the Tom in the story above was NOT Paxton. |
