Strup, here are a few tips for paltalk:

1. If you are going to be there often, the fee (under $30 a year) is well worth it if for no other reason than to get rid of the popups.

2. When you open the groups window, be sure to check the "SHow Adult Rooms" (provided you are over 18!) Among the obvious things, being an "adult" rooms means that those in ENgland can sing about what we call roosters in the US.

3. Look at the list of music rooms, and try a bunch. The live rooms are just that, and while there is certainly a wide range, there is some wonderful music that happens there. I like the blues rooms occasionally, and, while they like live music, they mostly play what I call "testosterone" blues...loud, long guitar solos, etc. There is an acoustic blues room that opens around 9 mudcat time on Sunday eves that I really enjoy....lots of recordings of delta and other country blues. They are very welcoming to those playing live in this genre as well....one of my favorites. Do you like accordian music...there is often a room called Accordians of the world where some really nice people gather. How about native american music....beautiful flute and drum music...very relaxing. The point is, poke around. You will likely wind up with some new friends.

4. Do you have a CD? Let them know when you play in the rooms. Most will like to visit your site if you post the url after you sing. I have sold CD's in England, Germany, Australia, NZ, and all over the US and Canada from playing on pal.

5. Should you decide to open and run a room, decide what you want it to be, set the tone, and stick to it. If you want it to be acoustic or Celtic or however you describe it, set that up in the room greeting. If someone plays a song that is out of place, politely tell them and they will find another place with no hard feelings. If someone jumps the mic, you can "red dot" them so they cannot do so. If anyone behaves contrary to your wishes, simply bounce them from the room. You will usually be cheered by the others as they will likely be just as offended as you. Just think - poof and a heckler is gone...

6. If you find anything in the music rooms that is distasteful (and there is some to be sure), simply ignore it or find another room. I see more incidents where one person tries to change how another thinks. Not much different than on mudcat occasionally.

7. You can add pals to your list so that when you go on you can see if any of them are on. Feel free to add dwditty and I will show you around. Maybe we enjoy the same kind of music, maybe not. You can message people....block people from messaging you....and lots in between. Right click somebody's name and you will see the options.

I enjoy paltalk...not everyone does. I suggest that people give it a try, but almost no one I tell about it does.

see you on pal.

I was in one room there and someone had posted that they didn't wish folks who posted to their room to use a certain color script. I think pink or red was their dislike. I inocently asked why there was an issue over the color of someone's text post to their room. At first, no one within the room would answer my question. It was like I was being ignored. I thought that because all of the folks there seemed to be familiar with one another and I was a stranger/visitor. So I posted the question again and I was bounced out on my ear by the moderator/tyrant without so much as an explaination.

Is there some secret meaning behing text color that is offensive to people? Have people adopted prejudicial attitudes about others based upon the color of the text they use? Mind you, I used no such prohibited colors when I posted there but was simply curious about why such a restriction might have been neccessary to inact. Is this the internet equivilent to being prejudice over someone's skin color or sexual preferences? If it is then I'm certain I wouldn't wish to be associated with that bunch anyway. What is this world wide web coming to?

Hi reggie,

I have often wondered about that as well. I believe it has something to do with folks who have a certain eye disorder and neon colors cause them problems...not sure just what...makes them dizzy I think. I too have been bounced from rooms - once just for being there. There are definitely some strange cats there. It does not take long to separate the wheat from the chaff, though. As far as feeling like a stranger, well, people tend to visit the same or a group of rooms and get to know each other. Join in and that feeling will go right away. Just say hello, be polite, and the good ones generally respond.

Okay, I guess I can understand that there might be some obscure medical condition where a certain kind of epilepsy can be triggered by the color red or some variation. At least that was part of the plot to that classic 1971 sci-fi movie The Andromeda Strain. I didn't read the Michael Crichton book to know if that same twist was used there as well, but if this was in fact the case and the cause for their concern, what were they doing playing on the internet in the first place? Pop-up ads like those that pervade Paltalk and elsewhere all across the web use all manner of colors especially various shades of red to capture your attention at every conceivable turn and click. If this was the reason for their rule, why couldn't someone simply explain that to me when I asked, as you did, instead of bouncing me out? And wouldn't a text chat room with no color text available at all or even a phone chat be safer than tempting fate and a possible seizure?

Well, reggie, there is no accounting for some of the behavior I see on Paltalk....same applies to mudcat and the world at large, for that matter. If stuff that happens on Pal gets under your skin, the negative aspects will likely outweigh any enjoyment you may find there. I tend to view on-line stuff as stopping at my computer screen which gives me the power to simply judge such people as jerks and move on. But that is just me.

DW,

I don't mean to beat this point to death, but thinking further about this today, I also know that there are controls on most monitors that allows adjustment of the color guns to filter out any of the three primary colors like reds. So, it makes me wonder if this was indeed about a medical condition or as I previously suggested something more.

Anyhoot, those kinds of attitudes don't dampen my enthusiasm for performing. What has been my biggest drawback to getting more involved with Paltalk has been the quality of sound that I'm able to achieve when trying to play while connected there. Other folks I've heard there sound absolutely wonderful but there's something about my connection that does not allow me to the same results. I've tried counseling with the Paltalk gurus about it but their advice has not been able to solve this riddle. I guess it's as I've said all along, my web connection to this here inflamation stupid highway happens to fall just beyond the event horizon known universe and there tain't nuthin' I kin do about it.

I'll be listenin' for ya, saw ya later, Reg
