Subject: Opendoor Folk Club-on the move again
From: flatcap

Hi! everyone.
We're on the move again, and will inform you of where we are as soon as we know ourselves.
Last night was going well until the interval when the 'landlord' allegedly (as his wife's name is above the door) told us to go. This was done in an aggressive manner with a lot of F words, pointing fingers and squaring up to people present.Apparently he was blaming a person who was rude to his wife. Knowing this person for over 10 years, I know this was his overreaction as this person is always polite. He then said It was my fault that there was a problem with the food at the Extravaganza ( those that were present will remember that he couldn't cope with the demand and that he accused someone of being rude to his wife and staff then). The Extravaganza was in October so he was just raking anything up. I had gone down earlier to see why the heating had gone off at 9.20, I was greeted with a cold stare then as if I had no right to ask for heating, though we pay for this weekly.
Anyway to cut a long story short he told everyone to leave his F... pub immediately, to leave our drinks. He had timed this just as everyone had bought another drink.
I apologise again for all of you that were present and I hope this pillock, and I'm being polite, won't put you off coming again.

Well, I copped a sight of him at the Extravaganza, and I have to say I din't like him much then. Perhaps it's for the best, Pauline.
And I, for one, will be with you on Sunday the 28th, even if we hold the evening on the street.
Just name the crossroads - I'll be there with Vanessa.

Sorry to hear what's happened. On my few visits I've always felt welcome by the barstaff but something's obviously rattled somebody's cage. I can't honestly believe that anybody that I've met at the club would do what's been alleged - you're all so friendly. Not a lot you can do really. I hope you find somewhere else - I know it's not easy finding a decent pub these days with friendly management, good beer and a private room. Let us know and I'll try and come along - not easy for me if it's on a Sunday as you know with commitments at my own club - that's why the Wooden Horse folk club is so called - they kept going from pub to pub for various reasons - landlords murdering the barstaff, locals fighting with the club organiser, Landlords having events without licences and being fined a fortune. You're not alone!! Good luck with new premises wherever they may be.
Cheers
Mark

Hi! Everyone. I'm back again. We've had a night of looking around for a new venue.
Here goes - We're back at the Star Inn Failsworth. It's under new management who are taking out a tenancy this week after running the pub for 13 weeks. They've said, and I've been told by another source that they have got rid of the riff raff.
NEXT WEEK THEN, THE STAR INN, CHURCH LANE, FAILSWORTH. It's one hell of a room and on the level. If you're not sure where it is then find the big church (St John's)on Oldham Road, (turn left from Oldham and right from Manchester)down Church Lane and there it is complete with carpark. If you're coming from Ashton way, then through Daisy Nook, continue along Ashton Rd East, past the shops and there it is to the left of the small round-a-bout.
Look forward to seeing you flatcap.

Good luck!

Multimap reference is HERE

Great that you've found somewhere else so quickly.

Cheers
Mark

I'll send out a Stop Press to the Folkal Point mailing list shortly. Well done (I'm echoing Mark) for finding another venue so quickly.

I still find it difficult to take in, though, that a whole bunch of well-behaved people have been banned from a pub because of the alleged misbehaviour of one person. If that landlord continues with that attitude, he soon won't have any customers left! Which will save us blacklisting his pub, I suppose...

Joan

Joan - Do you rember those great nights at The Castle on Gregson Lane. The landlord there, regurlary barred people for being drunk - which seemed strange for a man whose livelyhood depended on selling alcohol

Sorry to here about the Linnet - some landlords don't know when they're well off, don't deserve customers or should'nt be doing the bloody job, but there you go. Best of luck with the Star. Will try and make it at some point.

It sounds like the new venue is ideal I'm pleased to hear you are re-established so quickly. Most landlords appreciate the people who attend folk clubs.

Well done, Pauline for finding an alternative so quickly. I'd echo Mark's comments that I found the bar staff welcoming and friendly, and it is a shame that the landlord has taken the attitude he has. I'm tied up for the next few Sunday nights, but look forward to singing at the Open Door in its new home at the Star.

It was not the want of enjoyment at home,
That caused us poor exiles in sorrow to roam;
But the tyrannising landlord he would not let us stay,
So farewell unto ye bonny, bonny Linnet and Railway.

that makes two amendments for George Papavgeris web page, cos the comfort is no more, its the King Harry St Albans, Fridays.
It too boasts a car park, but even better, there's real ale.
All the best with the Star.

Cheers, breezy...and nice little ode there, Matthew.

Well done, Mark for getting the map sorted out so promptly - - can you sort out the relevant information on the Folk North-West site? (Bet you already have!!!)

So the Star it is then...quite appropriate for the time of year really...

All the Best.......Harry and Sara.

What a shame--the bar staff were indeed lovely and very welcoming.

Well done Pauline for sorting out another venue so quickly.

Will not be able to make The Star before Christmas but hope to be there for your Birthday Pauline on the 28th December.

Looking forward to seeing George and Vanessa as well.

Have a lovely Christams everyone.

Cheers

Well done Pauline it's a thankless task finding new venues at least now you can celabrate Christmas in style .It could have ended up with 'srooge' ruining it for you ,how much worse could that have been .What more does a bar person need but customers, money over the bar, music and friendly folkies Well theres no accounting for some folk is there Hope to come to see you in the new year. Happy Christmas & New Year Jill Fielding
