Subject: Obit : Winter's Wages From: Dave Swan Date: 11 Dec 03 - 09:36 PM I have received a personal message from LuLuBell informing me of the death of Lloyd Jones, known on the 'cat as Winter's Wages. Lloyd could squeeze a box, play guitar, sing a song, and make you smile. He played with the Black Irish Band, The Starboard Watch, and his own boys in a band. Lloyd was a deputy sheriff, and we used to joke (both of us public servants) that the point was to draw more years retirement pay than years of service. Cancer put paid to that. Shakespeare: Fear no more the heat of the sun, nor the furious winter's wages. He had a hell of a hug and a handshake. Rest well pal. D&P |

Subject: RE: Obit : Winter's Wages From: Dave Swan Date: 12 Dec 03 - 05:30 PM A clarification of my first post. The line from Shakespeare is correctly "the furious winter's rages". I sang it once the other way to crack Llyod up. It worked. We were having a conversation about folkies doing tough guy public service jobs. |
Subject: RE: Obit : Winter's Wages From: Amos Date: 12 Dec 03 - 06:08 PM Fear no more the heat o' the sun, Nor the furious winter's rages; Thou thy worldly task hast done, Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages; Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust. Fear no more the frown o' the great; Thou art past the tyrant's stroke: Care no more to clothe and eat; To thee the reed is as the oak: The sceptre, learning, physic, must All follow this, and come to dust. Fear no more the lightning-flash, Nor the all-dreaded thunder-stone; Fear not slander, censure rash; Thou hast finished joy and moan; All lovers young, all lovers must Consign to thee, and come to dust. No exorciser harm thee! Nor no witchcraft charm thee! Ghost unlaid forbear thee! Nothing ill come near thee! Quiet consummation have; And renownéd be thy grave! Will S |

Subject: RE: Obit : Winter's Wages From: GUEST,Gary from Dogwatch Date: 13 Dec 03 - 02:04 PM Hello, I've known Lloyd for I don't know how long. I seem to recall he was coming to the Chanty Sings at Hyde St Pier when I worked there as a Ranger in the early 80s. He's one of those people without a mean cell in his body. It was always a surprise on the rare occasion he was angry about something. I know his disease was one of thse things that made him angry, he fought it as hard as a body could. Claire informed me of this (I don't know how she posts here as I've never been on this forum before)and I passed Daves post on to all who would want to know, Kai, Skip, Dave and others in the Bay Area maritime music crowd. Dogwatch will be playing for the Christmas at Sea Event Sunday 12/12 at Hyde St Pier. Though we tend toward chanties and forebitters with a silly storyline or holiday bent, Fiddlers Green is now in the setbag. Anyone from the Bay Area who might be in SF Sunday is more than welcome to come help us sing. Its a song Lloyd often led at the Chanty sings and over the years when we performed together in pickup groups or when I was filling in for someone in Starboard Watch. Having ever been on the forum its a pleasure to see how many good friends he had here, those who have met him and those who havn't. For those who havn't he was really as sweet and good natured a soul as you could ever meet. Take care all, Gary |

Subject: RE: Obit : Winter's Wages From: katlaughing Date: 16 Dec 03 - 08:56 PM I am really sad to hear that Lloyd lost this battle. Over the past year or so we'd written a little bit to one another, as I sent him cards and tapes of music he said he'd enjoy. He was also very generous with his own music and very, very kind. May you rest in peace, friend, love, kat |
