Josh White (Sr) did "Take a girl like you down to New Orleans / Dress you in a dress of red..." which I kind of remember but can't find the lyrics online. Anyone know them?

Here's a Josh White discography which might be useful.

I've got a slightly longer quote, from a sound sample:

Take a gal like you down to New Orleans,
Dress you in a dress of red,
Get you a house on the back of town, baby,
Get you a folding bed, yes,
Get you a folding bed.

[Josh White sings TAKE A GIRL LIKE YOU on "Best of Josh White," Tradition CD 1082, 1999. Authorship is credited to Jacques Wolfe.]

I recall most of the words I learned from a 78rpm record purchased in 1952 (sorry about the missing word in V2/L1).

Take a girl like you down to New Orleans,
Dress you in a dress of red,
Buy you a house at the back of town, Baby,
Buy you a folding bed, yes, buy you a folding bed.

Buy you an expensive diamond ring,
Buy you a dress of blue,
Buy you a pair of high heeled shoes, Baby,
I'll be true to you, yes, I'll be true to you.

Tell me where did you get that pretty little dress,
Shoes that you wear so fine?
Well I got that dress from a railroad man,
Shoes from a man down the line, yes, shoes from a man down the line.

Having worked on the little grey cells I have managed to recall the entire song (I think I have the whole of Josh White's lyric).
What an artist and musician he was! He reduced me to tears when I listened to his series of programs on the BBC radio in 1951/52.

TAKE A GIRL LIKE YOU by: Josh White

Take a girl like you down to New Orleans,
Dress you in a dress of red,
Buy you a house at the back of town, Baby,
Buy you a folding bed, yes, buy you a folding bed.

Buy you an great big diamond ring,
Buy you a dress of blue,
Buy you a pair of high heeled shoes, Baby,
I'll be true to you, yes, I'll be true to you.

Who's going to buy you a pretty little dress?
Who's going to glove your hand?
Who's going to kiss your rosy cheeks, baby?
Who's going to be your man? yes, who's going to be your man?

Well, mamma's going to by me a pretty little dress,
Papa's going to glove my hand,
Sister's going to kiss my rosy cheeks, baby,
And you can be my man, yes, you can be my man.

Tell me where did you get that pretty little dress,
Shoes that you wear so fine?
Well I got that dress from a railroad man,
Shoes from a man down the line, yes, shoes from a man down the line.

Finally: repeat first verse.

I have a 78 from the late 40's,whence I learned it.
Take a gal like you down to New Orleans
Dress you in a dress of red,
Get you a house on the back of town baby,
Get you a folding Ed
Yessir
Get you a folding bed

Tell me
Where did you get your pretty little dress?
Shoes that you wear so fine?
Well I got my dress from a railroad man, baby
Shoes from a man down the line,
Yessir
Shoes from a man down the line,

Tell me
Who's gonna shoe your pretty little feet?
Who is gonna glove your hand?
Who's gonna kiss your rosy cheek, baby?
Who's gonna be your man?
Tell me
Who's gonna be your man?

Well
Papa's gonna shoe my pretty little feet
Mamma's gonna glove my hand
Sister's gonna kiss my rosy cheek, baby,
And you can be my man,
Yessir
You can be my man.

Buy you a great big diamond ring,
Buy you a dress of blue,
Buy you a pair of high heeled shoes, baby
And I'll be true to you,
Yessir
I'll be true to you.

As remembered by David Moizer
