After 38 years in the same pub the Bothy Folk Club is to move.
From Sunday 4th January 2004 the Bothy will be meeting at the Shelbourne Hotel, Lord St West, Southport. The move was necessitated by an unco-oprative managment regime and the gradual deteriation of the pub into grotsville. The final straw,was being asked to pay for the use of the room and not garunteeing regular tenure.
The new venue is easy to find near the center of Southport and offers cask beer and pleasant surroundings. For details of guests for 2004 and how to find The Shelbourne, see our website Bothy Folk Club

Good luck -we moved after the same thing and found a great venue although it took us a while to settle. We had been at the King Billy for 19 years and a change of management saw an end to us and the jazz club. The spiritualist meetings are still held at the club, because apparently they are heavy drinkers - spirits mostly I guess!

Thanks Linda, drinkers heavy or otherwise will be well catered for at the Shelbourne. Cask Landlord & Adnams are usually on offer and the managment has said they will try to get a couple of guest beers regularly.

Ooh, it's all getting rather exciting now isn't it?! Will a shirt and tie be neccessary dress for a two star hotel, and will Clive's famous jackets be looked on askance? (nothing to do with with baked potatoes either before some wag suggests he's a spud-u-like franchisee!

This sort of thing is becoming an increasing problem... the Falcon, Littleborough, has moved across the road to the Royal Oak, and the Open Door was evicted from the Railway and Linnet halfway through a guest night! We're now at the Star Inn, Failsworth.

The problem with us 'folkies' is that we don't tend to drink the fashionable, profitable drinks - we like real beer!

We are also very antisocial, because we don't like the constant thump of the jukebox...!!

Ho hum!!

I'll make sure we give you the appropriate publicity on 'Sounds of Folk' (Monday 8:00pm - 9:00pm on BBC GMR, 95.1/104.6 FM), though I'm sure Ali has already received the info from Joan Blackburn.

Erm... you have told Joan, haven't you?!

Anyway, here's to another 38 years, or more, in your new home!

Am I right in thinking that the Bothy have been temporarily at the Shelbourne Hotel before when the Blundell Arms was being decorated. What sort of prices are they charging for their beer? Is it reasonable or is it hotel prices?
I only ask because since the Broken Token got chucked out of a decent real ale pub at the Eagle and Child at Bispham Green (The manageress got threatened with jail and a large fine for us being there - PEL, etc) and found refuge at Mawdsleys Hotel down the road in Mawdesley (note different spellings), we have to suffer the unholy price of £2-20 (cheap for you Southerners I'm sure) for a pint of nitrofizz Boddingtons or John Smiths shite and having asked them to get some bottled beers in, they got London Pride and Timothy Taylor's Landlord in and charge £2-50 for the honour of drinking it. I'm quite happy to drink tap water for nothing as I have to drive anyway but I do appreciate the odd reasonably priced pint!

Yes, thats the same place, & very welcoming they are too. I think the beer prices are O.K. but i'll do some research on the beer for you Mark (it's a tough job but someones got to do it).

On my last visit Adnams was £1.80 and I think Taylors Landlord went for £2. There have been many and varied Bothy events at the Shelly over the years. I went to a few of the 35th birthday functions there and there's been everything from Summer break bar sessions to formal dinners and rock and roll nights with a band called the "Lunchtime Legends" which is a sort of Bothy spin-off, tending to raise money for local charities.
The family owns the Italian restaurant over the road too, so pre-Bothy meal deals could be on the the cards I suppose! It's a long way from that 'Songs-Of-The-People' concept - what would the early collectors think? You're right - they'd love it! "More lasagne Mr Sharp or shall we ask that old boy shivering in the cold outside if he knows any 'proper' songs apart from that Music Hall nonsense he's bawling?!"

Is the saturday lunchtime session still going? Is it on THIS saturday? I know it was at the falstaff but where is that ? Good luck in the new venue. The Bothy is very very special club and I hope the new venue sees it going from strength to strength.

Hi, Yes the Falstaff session is on this Sat,lunchtime until teatime. The Falstaff is in King St, just by it's junction with Portland St (that's beside the Prince of Wales Hotel, Lord St).
The Sat sessions at the Falstaff are usually on the 1st Sat in the month & the Monday night sessions at the Guest House, Union St, are usually on the 3rd Mon in the month. Check the diary page on the Bothy website for any changes.

I think I'll give my fullest support to the club at its new home. The plus points that have been mentioned sound very enticing. Are there any plans yet for a 40th Birthday celebration?

Hi, Just got back from the first night at the new venue. It was a good night, good turn out, plenty of good floor singers from far and wide, the acoustics in the new room weren't bad at all, and there was cask beer at a reasonable price. Next week guests Karen & Colin Thompson, in three weeks Steve Tilston.

I agree with you LesB, it was a really good evening and I thought the accoustics were good. Actually probably better from the back of the room where some people were talking while singers were on. Their voices carried very well! I really enjoyed singing my favourite songs with my favourite man!

What's going to happen to that famous stage? Has it moved too? Will it get a refurb? Who built it anyway and how long have they had it? Didn't the original one used to be a fixed, high thing at the back of the room - sort of like a "Band On The Wall" affair?

Just like to say how much I enjoyed Steve Tilston's performance last night. I'm so glad he did 'Salty Dog', and 'Slip Jigs and Reels'. Good songs those. Thanks Bothy, another jolly evening.
