I have obtained this CD and Lutz' earlier collaboration with Dickie Bishop (The July Sessions) from Ray Smith International in the Netherlands. Great stuff for old 1960s dinosaurs like me. Lutz also sent me a very interesting e-mail on the background to the records and the skiffle and trad scene in Germany which I could reprint here if there is any interest.

Yes, Charlie, I've got that version as well, nearer to Dickie's original than the Vipers too-fast version, but "electric" and bass-heavy of course!

I hvae been looking for details of the original Dickie Bishop release of this for a year or so.

Any ideas? I think 1957 and got to no.7 (UK), but internet searches do not support this, nor a very knowledgeable friend who has even emailed Paul Gambaccini to no avail.

I think was by "Dickie Bishop and the Sidekicks".

Can the mudcat confirm where others fail, and does anyone know does that recording still gets significant radio play anywhere in the world?

Richard,

I don't know if you have access to Billy Bragg's recent book "Roots, Radicals and Rockers". He includes Bishop in there.

There is also "Skiffle" by Chas McDevitt which states "Bob Watson & Dickie co-wrote the song it was released in the USA but covered by Bobby Helms where it got into the country charts in 1957. Issued in the UK the following year it peaked at number 30 in the hit parade pushing Dickie's fine re-recording out of the ratings".

Hope this is of some help
