Simply type the stone outside dan murphy's door into the very useful onsite search engine we have here. You will find it at the top of the main Forum page.

The stone outside Paddy Murphy's door wouldn't get you very far, of course. Always best to use a distinct phrase with less chance of mistakes in it; the stone outside, for example, works perfectly well.

The McNulty Family were I believe an Irish family based in the U.S.A. probably New York or Boston. LP's are still available but hard to come by. I may have one in my collection but it will take some time to locate it. I believe Delia Murphy recorded this song also. I only know little pieces of it. Give me a few more days.

I just copied the lyrics from the version I have by Foster and Allen,
hope they will do,

THE STONE OUTSIDE DAN MURPHY'S DOOR
As recorded by Foster & Allen

1. There's a sweet garden spot in our mem'ry.
It's the place we were born and reared.
'Tis long years ago since we left it,
But return there we will if we're spared.
Our friends and companions of childhood
Would assemble each night near the store.
Round Dan Murphy's shop, oh, how often we've sat
On the stone that stood outside his door!

CHORUS: Those days in our hearts we will cherish,
Contented although we were poor,
And the songs that were sung
In the days we were young
On the stone outside Dan Murphy's door.

2. When our day's work was over, we'd meet there,
In the winter or spring the same.
The boys and the girls all together
Would join in some innocent game.
Dan Murphy would bring down his fiddle
While his daughters looked after the store.
The music would ring and sweet songs we would sing
On the stone outside Dan Murphy's door. CHORUS

3. Back again will our thoughts often wander
To the scenes of our childhood's home,
The friends and companions we left there.
It was poverty caused us to roam.
Since then in this life we have prospered,
But now still in our hearts we feel sure,
For mem'ries will fly to the days gone by,
And the stone outside Dan Murphy's door. CHORUS

Have Fun

Wilby

I have a vague feeling that I've passed a house while driving from Dublin to Galway that has a plaque saying it's the original Dan Murphy's and the stone is still there.... can't be more help, though.

If you're desperate to know I'll ask around.

Fascinating stuff: thanks GUESTS. Johnny Patterson wrote some great old songs, didn't he? Going sideways: the name "Guerin", referred to in the link given in the previous post, came to Ireland from France with the (Protestant) Huguenots following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.

Looking at Big Tim's note above about "Guerin", I don't know about Gaelic, but the Welsh "Gwerin" means "Folk" (as one of its meanings)

Thanks for responding. Actually, I'm doing a bit of research for a relative of the McNulty's. That is the song that was best remembered.
