as she recorded the definitive versions of Eric Bogle's masterpieces, long before the Irish murdered them, it is assumed that every self respecting 'f-song' enthusiast would possess a June Tabor' 'Anthology' album

To be ignorant of her work means there is serios research work ahead

I very much like her rendition of 'A Place Called England' by Maggie Holland.
It stands as out as THE patriotic song of our times

Bill Caddick was aware of her policy of titling all her albums until recently with a song beginning with the letter 'A', so he wrote 'Aqaba' for her.
'
'The Writing of Tipparary' is a great song by Bill that also appears on 'Anthology' plus 'King of Rome'

Her interpretation of Richard Thompson deserves mention

I have really enjoyed her collaborations with Maddy Prior.

And I think "A Proper Sort of Gardener" one of her best. (Also a Maggie Holland song.) Though I have a number of favorites, as a group I like her early unaccompanied songs the best.

I don't much care for some of the more jazzy stuff she does, but I will occasionally buy a CD for the several really fine songs that she does well, and that no one else I have access to has recorded.

Speaking of which, is anyone familiar with Maggie Holland's recordings, and could give a "review"? I tried some time back to get one but the imports were so expensive I gave it up. Tried to look for them when in England (Kent) last summer and had no luck.

(Looks like we may be coming back to the UK in Sept of 2004. Where is there a good record shop near Tenterden, or near Glastonbury/Wells? We will probably be spending most of our time in those two areas. We try to avoid the big city!)

Its not shops for records its labels like Fellside and Topic
Most artistes tout their own wares
Very little in the shops
Maggie Holland's own version of 'A place called England' is earthy with banjo, raw and pungent, tabor's is rather 'refined' in comparison

Her breathtaking version of Mike and Lal Waterson's "Scarecrow," with Richard Thompson's "Pharaoh," her recording of "Bonnie Susie Clelland" with Oysterband, and Les Barker's aforementioned "January June" tying for a close second -- followed by pretty much everything else she's ever put her voice to in third place. In fourth -- well, I didn't much care for her version of "Mayn Ruhre Platz" (spelled wrong, maybe), which I found a bit over-emoted. But then I'm more used to hearing this performed in kelzmer style, which is pretty much guaranteed to sound less maudlin than Saint June, isn't it?

Anyway she's a treasure and never to be missed. And I must add that her voice is every bit as spectacular in person as it is on record. Prior to my first live June Tabor experience I assumed that the perfection of her recordings was the result of electronic wizardry, but it ain't so. Her capabilities are simply far beyond those of mere mortals.

A long, long time ago June Tabor and Barry Dransfield tried out some arrangements. That wasn't a bit maudlin.

Yes, she does The Scarecrow really well. Though even more breathtaking is The Witches of Elswick version.

Plains of Waterloo is still my favourite June Tabor track..

Just surfing through this forum as i usually do but couldn't resist voting for my favourite June Tabor song performance: "King of Rome" written by someone whose last name is Salsbury. Lyrics are on the site here. I believe this is on the album "Aqaba" but I have also seen her do it on a Ken Russell short film entitled "In Search of the English Folk Song" (recommended for its very quirky look at British folk music)
I never understood the British working class fascination with racing pigeons until I heard this song. Stunning!

Featured on a television programme of June Tabor with a truly stunning video.
Pigeon fanciers are like catters, therefore we can empathise.

I just love her to bits. I reckon there is no finer female English trad singer (maybe forget the female bit - the finest) and she could cross the divide to jazz too. I saw her at the Holywell Rooms just over a yeat ago. She hadn't finished the first line and I realised something special was going to happen. Favourite track - hard, but the song that alerted me was Bonny Boy from the compilation Voices which I thought was the outstanding song on the CD.

Speaking of Maggie Holland, we had her at our club a couple of years ago and she was superb. One of our most underrated writers and performers. And she almost ate the guy whose mobile went off (twice) for breakfast! Go Girl!

I heard her on he radio, many yonks ago (Folkweave-Tony Capstick),singing Dave Goulders "Easter Tree" and it was stunning.

I remember June singing 'Africa's Burning Sand' at, possibly, the Enterprise one hot and extremely close summer evening way back in the mid '70s. She'd just finished a very melodramatic line when there was a room-shaking crash of thunder and lightning outside that must have lasted ten seconds or so. There was a stunned silence for several seconds more, at which point she took a deep bow before continuing with the song.

So, because I remember that one the best, it's my choice.

And June was, indeed, a librarian back then.

If you were referring to 'Africa's Burning Sand', I'm sorry but don't know whether or not she recorded it. The song is something of a melodrama if I remember correctly, and there's a strong likelihood that it wasn't an entirely serious rendition; June has a very dry sense of humour I recall. But, 35 years is a long time and I can't even be absolutely certain about what beer we we drank that evening.
