Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: GUEST,Azoic Date: 12 Dec 12 - 04:09 AM I'd really like to see Maggie Holland write a follow up to her magnum opus "A Place Called England" that pertains to the 99 percent/Occupy movement here in the US.Maybe call it "A Place Called America"? |

Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: Max Johnson Date: 20 Sep 11 - 07:48 AM As I stated, I was referring not to the 'Rose of Allendale', but to 'Africa's Burning Sand'. It was nearly 40 years ago, but I clearly remember both the song and the incident. I'm very sorry to say that I don't recall whether or not she pronounced it 'Afric'. |

Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: Backwoodsman Date: 08 Jul 11 - 08:17 AM And I love June's version of Bill Caddick's "The Writing of Tipperary". But I love pretty much anything June sings, she's superb. |
Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: Backwoodsman Date: 08 Jul 11 - 08:10 AM Should say too that when we learned TRoA at school, we sang "Afric's", not "Africa's". Apologies for the outbreak of pedantry. |
Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: Backwoodsman Date: 08 Jul 11 - 08:08 AM "Africa's Burning Sand" If you're referring to the line from 'The Rose of Allendale', then it should be "Afric's", not "Africa's". Lyrics And interesting that, if the source is to be believed, it's not an Irish song at all. Unless, of course, anyone knows better?? |

Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: Max Johnson Date: 06 Apr 11 - 12:21 PM 'Rose of Allendale' is a lovely song, Azoic, but I will hazard, if I may, that it is unlikely I have confused it with 'Africa's Burning Sand'. |

Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: Max Johnson Date: 06 Apr 11 - 11:32 AM Azoic - I don't recognize that title... If you were referring to 'Africa's Burning Sand', I'm sorry but don't know whether or not she recorded it. The song is something of a melodrama if I remember correctly, and there's a strong likelihood that it wasn't an entirely serious rendition; June has a very dry sense of humour I recall. But, 35 years is a long time and I can't even be absolutely certain about what beer we we drank that evening. Max J. |
Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: GUEST Date: 06 Apr 11 - 07:41 AM Firstly, Breezy, in what way did the Irish 'murder' Eric Bogle!? I've always loved her versions of 'The King Of Rome' and 'It's a Long Way To Tipperary' |

Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: Max Johnson Date: 05 Apr 11 - 02:51 PM I remember June singing 'Africa's Burning Sand' at, possibly, the Enterprise one hot and extremely close summer evening way back in the mid '70s. She'd just finished a very melodramatic line when there was a room-shaking crash of thunder and lightning outside that must have lasted ten seconds or so. There was a stunned silence for several seconds more, at which point she took a deep bow before continuing with the song. So, because I remember that one the best, it's my choice. And June was, indeed, a librarian back then. |

Seen her several times at our local arts centre - astonishing voice and such incredible intensity in performance. Fantastic. Speaking of Maggie Holland, we had her at our club a couple of years ago and she was superb. One of our most underrated writers and performers. And she almost ate the guy whose mobile went off (twice) for breakfast! Go Girl! Johnny |
Subject: RE: waht you favourite june tabor song/ From: Pete_Standing Date: 07 Jan 04 - 11:35 AM I just love her to bits. I reckon there is no finer female English trad singer (maybe forget the female bit - the finest) and she could cross the divide to jazz too. I saw her at the Holywell Rooms just over a yeat ago. She hadn't finished the first line and I realised something special was going to happen. Favourite track - hard, but the song that alerted me was Bonny Boy from the compilation Voices which I thought was the outstanding song on the CD. |
