Subject: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: Kim C Date: 06 Jan 04 - 12:14 PM Mister gave to me: O'er His Grave the Grass Grew Green - this is a collection of tragic ballads from Topic Records' Voice of the People series And two from Custer LaRue: Appalachian Ballads, and Custer LaRue Sings The Daemon Lover. These two are fabulous and I have already learned a couple of songs from them. My friend Vernell gave me an Asleep at the Wheel CD but I haven't listened to it yet. So what new music did you get? |
Subject: RE: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: Wesley S Date: 06 Jan 04 - 01:24 PM Actually the only CD's I received this year were spoken word - not music. My wife sprang for the complete Lord Of The Rings trilogy so we could listen to them in our cars. We both have a long drive to work. However I plan to pick up the newest Tim O'Brien CD. |

Subject: RE: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: Helen Date: 06 Jan 04 - 04:03 PM From my Secret Santa, Blackcatter, I got an amazingly beautiful harp, other instruments, and vocal CD called Women of Ireland by Ceoltóirí. They are in the same class as Sileas and/or The Poozies. (You notice that there are harps, and then there are just "other instruments" in my personal universe? That's not really, really true, but....) I also bought a triffic CD for my Secret Santee, Mary in Kentucky, and I'll have to go and get a copy for myself now. I bought her a different one to start with, by an Oz classical guitar trio called Saffire, but then I had the brainwave of buying the CD by the local car-mechanic/Scottish fiddler Chris Duncan. So I get to keep the Saffire CD - I just hope I made the right choice for Mary, but I think I did. Helen |

Subject: RE: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: Jeri Date: 06 Jan 04 - 07:49 PM I bought my own CD - 'Erhu's Greatest Hits'. The erhu (Arr-who) is a musical (?) instrument similar to a musical (?) saw in tonal quality, but worse. 'Dueling Erhus' is my favorite cut, even if there's only one erhu. The banjo is played by someone who occasionally posts here. (Hi Rick!) There are no names listed on the CD, with very good reason. I was positively inspired! I can now play Dueling Banjos on my button box. |

Subject: RE: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: LadyJean Date: 07 Jan 04 - 12:41 AM My sister, the merry prankster, goes to the music store every year, and asks them for the worst CD they have. The folk in the store go to considerable trouble and effort to pick out something truly appalling just for me. Last year's was Ema Sumac. This year is something from the seventies, that I think may be poetry. I haven't gone so far as to play it. A couple of years ago a friend did me serious dirt. Now I have something I can do with the godawful CDs my sister gives me. I regift them to my friend for her birthday in March. Tee Hee. |

Subject: RE: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 07 Jan 04 - 03:36 AM I forgot, I bought myself the Nic Jones 'Unearthed' CD despite the picture on the front which, although I can see the symbolism, bearing in mind his history, is not in the best of taste. LTS |

Subject: RE: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 07 Jan 04 - 08:52 AM Secret Santa Micca sent me the Lorna Campbell CD I couldn't get thru my favourite shop (Lorna sings Ian Campbell) - it's as good as I expected it to be. AND a CD of the singing session at Towersey Barn Aug 2003. Wonderful, its just like being there & I love singing sessions. He also sent a CD-ROM (do they count? - of course, the Peter Bellamy triple referred to above has a ROM section on it) of an assortment of British & US catters. So far I've only taken a quick squizz of the pictures & haven't matched them with the very detailed index, nor have I listened to the kazoo music & other musical treats on it. But maybe I'll have the time this weekend. Tho JennyO is throwing her annual January party .. Just before chrissy I bought myself several To: me From: me pressies - a double of Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie & one by a local group Blackwood (wonderful vocals, marvelous harp, fiddle, whistles, mandolin, accordian ...) & received a free CD from an American group, Wayback, who do not want a gig at my club cos they know we are not the type of venue they need, so I can't call it payola. They are a mavellous (newgrass, whatever that is) group I would probably have never seen if I'd read about them in a program & I will be meeting them at the National (Folk Festival at Easter) I also bought a few other CDs but they've slipped my mind (oops, they must hgave been memorable), but it is well after midnight here sandra |
Subject: RE: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: Glen Reid Date: 07 Jan 04 - 11:27 AM Someone gave me a DVD of "This Land Is Your Land" Nice little trip down memory lane. The years have been better to some, more than others. I'm still trying to adjust to Bob Shane,s long silver pony tail. This DVD is a couple of years old and I was wondering if this was the inspiration for "A Mighty Wind" or vise-versa? Also when they panned the audience, I didnt see anyone under the age of 40.......any thoughts? Cheers, Glen |

Subject: RE: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: hobbitwoman Date: 10 Jan 04 - 05:08 PM I just spent two of my gift certificates on Eva Cassidy Songbird and American Tune. Love them both. I think my next purchases will be The Chieftans Down the Old Plank Road and Further Down the Old Plank Road, and the James Galway CD with Molly Mason and Jay Ungar. Can't think of the name just now - it will probably take me a few months to get all three however. So much music, so little money!! Annie |
Subject: RE: What CDs didja get for Christmas? From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jan 04 - 06:38 PM Well, it was kind of an early Christmas present - a copy of my older son's CD, titled S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D. The single is "Dad, There's a Little Phrase Called Too Much Information." You can hear samples here (click). I asked him whose dad the band was referring to in the song and album titles. His reply: "Dad, you don't need to ask." So, I'm the "star" of a single that actually charted in some of the listings. My younger son gave me Neil Young, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. They don't want me forgetting my rock 'n' roll roots. -Joe Offer- |
