Subject: Lyr Add: THE CLOSE SHAVE (Bob Bickerton) From: Sorcha Date: 09 Jan 04 - 11:05 AM (No clue what happened up above...) THE CLOSE SHAVE (Bob Bickerton) Come gather round you diggers who work the goldfields rare, It's of a trick was played on me which caused me to despair, I came to town the other day my hard earned gold to trade, 'Twas there I met a pretty maid, who did my heart betray. Her lips were red as roses, her eyes a deep sky blue, Her hair as yellow as the gold, she stole from me and you. She took me to a public house and there we did imbibe, In whiskey and strong porter, and dreadful stuff besides, It's then she asked me up to bed, to which I did agree, But truth to tell I fell asleep, before she earned her fee. When I awoke next morning, no trousers could I find, But scattered all around me were women's clothes so fine. My jacket, shoes and gold had gone, and all that's left behind, Is a woman's dress, a yellow wig and a shaving kit, not mine. Why did she need the wig? Why did she need to shave? It's then the truth it struck me, in a fit of blinding rage. My pretty maid's a man I cried, be thanks I fell asleep, I'd rather lose a bag of gold, than face that dirty creep. To venture in the street again, I cautiously inclined, I had a shave, put on the wig, and wore the dress so fine, And as I walked along the road, a digger gave a wink. I thought of all the gold he had, so I offered him a drink. Now you might think it sinful, oh you might think it bold, To take advantage of the lads who struggle for the gold. It's easy putting on a dress and drinking whiskey neat, But leave your shaving kit behind when they are fast asleep. Melody here,Click! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Close Shave Chords From: GUEST,999 Date: 10 Feb 12 - 05:33 PM It uses basically the same chords as the traditional song, Barrack Street. Come gather round you diggers who work the goldfields rare, It's of a trick was played on me which caused me to despair, I came to town the other day my hard earned gold to trade, 'Twas there I met a pretty maid, who did my heart betray. You can hear Nic Jones--he has a wonderful voice--doing Barrack Street at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQAvq9WZU8U If it still presenting a problem, please post back and indicate the key you'd like the chords in, ok? It's fairly straight-forward. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Close Shave by Bob Bickerton From: Splott Man Date: 19 Oct 15 - 07:41 AM I believe Bob Bickerton does this as a bush poem, so Andy Irvine may well have set the tune himself. Splott man |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Close Shave by Bob Bickerton From: GUEST,henryp Date: 20 Oct 15 - 07:19 AM The group Patrick Street evolved from a tour of America in 1985 by Andy Irvine, Kevin Burke and Mícheál Ó Domhnaill. "This tour was such fun and so successful that we decided to expand the outfit into a four-piece by adding Jackie Daly," Irvine wrote. They released their first record in 1986, and the first track was the song Patrick Street. Bob Bickerton reworked the words of the song. "I set the song in the gold rush on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand and put a few extra twists in the tail as it were. Andy heard about the song after I had performed it at the Wellington Folk Festival and I gave it to him the following summer when he was touring here." |
