Can anyone provide the lyrics to the original Heart of my Heart which dates back to 1920s/30s. It is needed for a forthcoming funeral

Here's what I remember from Sing Along with Mitch.

Heart of my heart, I love that melody.
Heart of my heart, brings back a memory.
When we were kids on the corner of the square,
we were rough and ready guys, but oh, how we could harmonize.

Heart of my heart, good friends were dearer then.
Too bad we had to part.
I know a tear would glisten if once more I could listen,
to that gang that sang "Heart of my Heart."

(I am not 100% sure of the line "good friends were dearer then.")

I seem to remember it as "old friends were dearer then".

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: GANG THAT SANG "HEART OF MY HEART"
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 15 Jan 04 - 09:59 AM

The song we've been discussing is properly called THE GANG THAT SANG "HEART OF MY HEART." The song it refers to is apparently a much older one. I haven't been able to definitely identify that earlier song, but I will keep looking. (I am having some computer problems that I may have to solve first.)

Lyrics and chords below copied from The Guitarguy's Golden Classics:

THE GANG THAT SANG "HEART OF MY HEART"
Words & Music by Ben Ryan, 1926
Recorded by Don Cornel, 1953 (#10)
Also recorded by The Four Lads, Alan Dale & Johnny Desmond

The older song referred to: "Heart of My Heart" has as its actual title "Song of the Rose".   Perhaps our top searchers can run it down with that info?

Subject: Lyr Add: THE STORY OF THE ROSE / HEART OF MY HEART
From: Jim Dixon

Here it is, and I must say I find the words a bit disappointing. The song seems to be a favorite of barbershop quartets, just as the above song is.

Transcribed from the sheet music images at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music:

THE STORY OF THE ROSE (a.k.a. HEART OF MY HEART)
(Words by "Alice." Music by Andrew Mack. 1899)
From "Andrew Mack's Songs as Sung By Him in His New Play The Last of the Rohans, by Ramsay Morris, Management of Rich & Harris"

A youth one day in a garden fair
A rose found wither'd and dying,
And all for love, ah! love in vain,
This rose was sadly sighing:

CHORUS:
Heart of my heart, I love you.
Life would be naught without you.
Light of my life, my darling,
I love you, I love you.
I can forget you never
From you I ne'er can sever.
Say you'll be mine forever.
I love you.

O sweet wild rose of a summer day,
Thy love has all been in vain
Loved by a maid then cast away
I echo thy refrain: CHORUS

I think the Kenneth MCKellar song Mary is thinking of is 'Westering Home' whcih contains the words 'heart of my heart' but has no other connection as far as I know.

Any one know the connection between the song, heart of my hearts, and the tune used for the Whittlesey straw bear, which came off the album 'Rattlebone and Ploughjack' by Ashley Hutchins et al?.Theyre almost identical.
