Subject: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: Ethereal Purple Date: 18 Jan 04 - 01:48 AM This year's our final year in school, and two girls junior to us are planning to sing and play the guitar at what we call the 'farewell' -graduation kind of thingy. They're planning to do 'As Tears Go By'... and want another song. Any suggestions? Something sad... and maybe slow... and sentimental. Leaving-school-ish. Or not... just a song that makes you feel really sad, and makes you cry! Preferably not too unknown :-). |

From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Jan 04 - 02:17 AM Hi, Purple - I grouped this thread with our other parting song threads - the Parting songs thread has the widest variety. You may want to try a Digital Tradition Keyword Search (click) for parting - we have some 260 parting songs in our database. I guess you can't use "parting glass" songs for a school graduation, but I have to say that When First We Met is my current favorite parting song. Good luck to you! -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: Midchuck Date: 18 Jan 04 - 08:25 PM The old Dylan one to the tune of "Parting Glass" is nice - I think it's called "Restless Farewell." Of course, it ends, "...and bid farewell, and not give a damn." So you'll probably get people saying it's "inappropriate." May those people descend to the Muslim Hell and be sodomized by demons. Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: freightdawg Date: 19 Jan 04 - 11:08 AM My senior year in high school the graduating class was given the task of choosing its "class song," as was the usual custom. The song was to be somewhat contemporary, and express to the school and our community what we viewed of ourselves, life, graduation, etc. Some joker nominated "Dust in the Wind" words and music by Kerry Livgren and performed by Kansas. It was the clear winner. The administration wanted to hold another selection, but that got our dander up and we made sure we kept it just to make a statement. Dreadfully depressing lyrics, but lovely melody. On graduation night it was performed by an instrumental group - I guess the admin. just would not allow it to be sung. It has always been a sentimental favorite of mine, and it a twisted way (the way my mind seems to work) I think it was a pretty good choice. "Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind." Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: George Papavgeris Date: 20 Jan 04 - 01:53 PM "Sound the horn" from my album "Perfect Moments" might be appropriate, for a tongue-in-cheek farewell. Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: GUEST,Guest (Mike K.) Date: 21 Jan 04 - 09:54 AM Here's To Song The candle flickers t'wards its last; Our time together's ended. The evening sped so swiftly past; No richer way to spend it. Before we head our sep'rate ways, I'd like in truthfulness to say: You've made this day a special day With songs and kindness splendid. Here's to song, here's to time, Here's to both with friends mine Here's to friends who raise their voices high. Kings have riches widely lain, Lords have lands but then again, We have friends and songs no wealth can buy. We each a diff''rent road must go To mountain, sea or city The hour has come for sweet adieus, And ah, the more's the pity. But first unite in hand and heart And sing a chorus e'er we part, For every end leads to a start, We need not part so sadly. Here's to song, here's to time, Here's to both with friends mine, Here's to friends who raise their voices high. Kings have riches widely lain, Lords have lands but then again, We have friends and songs no wealth can buy. Until our paths in future cross May blessings kindly wait you. Until that time I must alas I'll leave and then re-meet you. But often I will sit and stare And think upon this moment rare, The company beyond compare, So now farewell and thank you. Here's to song, here's to time, Here's to both with friends mine Here's to friends who raise their voices high. Kings have riches widely lain, Lords have lands but then again, We have friends and songs so no wealth can buy. We have friends and songs so no wealth can buy. Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: HipflaskAndy Date: 21 Jan 04 - 10:42 AM And so the time has come The evening at an end We must say farewell and go as friends It seems only right to say What wond'rous sheer delight To share such moments here with you tonight Chorus: May you always be happy Make the most of each new day May you all help one another on the way May your journey seem shorter Than the one that brought you here May you soon lie in arms of those that you hold dear We've weaved a tale or two All have played their part And sung to raise the rafters from the start So at this closing hour Not knowing where or when One chorus more - and we may meet again . . . Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: EBarnacle Date: 29 Jan 04 - 10:10 AM I recently used "Hello, I must be going" as sung by Groucho Marx in the movie "Animal Crackers"-- Hello, I must be going, I'm sad to say I really must be going; I'll stay a week or two, I'll stay the Summer through; But now I say to you, I must be [drop voice as low as you can go] go-ing. I generally introduce this as part of the philosophy of the great philosopher, Marx. It's amazing how few people get it until the song has proceeded into its middle. |
Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: 42 Date: 29 Jan 04 - 10:17 AM Brendan Nolan (and about 20 other performers) have put music to a beautiful poem by Holmes Hook called "Song for the Road" Our evening here is at an end the time to part is near I'm glad our roads that they did cross and come together here Your welcome it has been so warm, so before we travel on Raise your glass and raise your voice and join us in this song Chorus If your road is lonely even till the end A song that's well-kept in your heart will be a steady friend And if your way is paved with love, raise your voice in song And share it with a traveller whose road is hard and long The ways we take from this place will have many twists and bends But I've never travelled on a road that didn't have an end And when I meet some folks like you that I'd love to call my friends I pray the road will take a turn and we'll sing this song again Chorus But if I find a resting place before I'm back this way Should the road become too long and my step turn to clay If from tonight you do recall just one line of this song Then even if my road should end, this song will travel on Chorus |
Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 29 Jan 04 - 10:31 AM An old Southern parting hymn, used at many "final" services, not just funerals: God Be With You Till We Meet Again (It's probably too "churchy" for your occasion, but the tune is very familiar in the South.) I would prefer Beethovan's Ode to Joy played slowly! The perfect "going out" song. |

Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: open mike Date: 29 Jan 04 - 03:07 PM I just came across a song in the most recent Folk Nik, the newsletter of the San Francisco Folk Music Club. Going Home by Jim James. It was written when he was with the Southport Folk Club in Both, U.K. in 1984. It is on Windjammer Days CD, www.mainewindjammercruises.com In the night sky you can hear the geese cry Whe it's time for the going home song The gull on the shore's sailing homeward once more For it's time for the going home song Chorus: Travellers the wide world over May your star follow you through the night With the storm clouds at bay An the end of the day Then it's time for the going home Time we were getting home Time for the going home song The fox on the dunes looking out for the moon For it's time for the going home song The shepherd and dogs wend their way with their flocks When it's time for the going home song Chorus There'll be peace once again over valley and glen When it's time for the going home song When the mist from the sea spins its own mystery Then it's time for the going home song Chorus |
Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: GUEST,Les B. Date: 29 Jan 04 - 03:23 PM Well, from the country western arena this song might possibly work with a few word changes - it's been done by Willie Nelson and others. THE PARTY'S OVER CHORUS [A] Turn out the lights, [E] the party's [A]over. They say that all [E]good things must end. [A] Call it a night, [D] the party's over and tomorrow starts the [A] same old [E] thing [A] again. [A] What a crazy, crazy party. Never seen so many people. Laughing, dancing, look at you, you're having [E]fun. Look at me, I'm almost crying. But, that don't keep her love from dying. Misery calls for me. The party's [A] over. (CHORUS) [A] Once, I had a love undying. I didn't keep it I wasn't trying. Life for me was just one party then [E]another. I broke her heart so many times. Had to have my party wine. Then one day she said, "Sweetheart the party's [A]over". |

Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: HipflaskAndy Date: 30 Jan 04 - 05:19 AM Now then Purple Person, >>Is there any way you could send it through the net? << Technically that's a possiblity of course. I just have to work out how! I can use these PC things to some extent, but I'm gonna have to get some assistance to get the track to you over the net. (And before floods of advice starts coming in - I'm likely not gonna understand owt technical! So make it, like me, simple!) The lyric is up above here somewhere - but I'll retype it with the basic chords in place as soon as I can (there's only four! D,A, G and Bm and the most simple 'strumming' will accompany it nae bother!) meantime, another nip from the flask, and back to work! HFA |

Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: gnomad Date: 24 Apr 06 - 05:35 AM Here's one I like, though possibly not right for a school-leaving ceremony. Health to the Company Kind friends and companions, come join me in rhyme, And lift up your voices in chorus with mine, Let's drink and be merry, all grief to refrain, For we may and might never all meet here again. Chorus: Here's a health to the company, and to my lass, Let's drink and be merry, all out of one glass, Let's drink and be merry, ail grief to refrain, For we may and might never all meet here again. Here's a health to the dear lass that I love so well, Her style and her beauty there's none can excel, She smiles on my countenance, sits on my knee, Sure there's no one on earth makes me happy as she. Our ship lies in harbour, she's ready to dock, Let's hope she's safe landed, without any shock, If ever I meet you, by land or by sea, I will always remember your kindness to me. |
Subject: RE: Suggestions for a farewell song? From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 24 Apr 06 - 10:00 AM A common one in the Scottish folk scene is "Happy we've been a' thegither" (the Willie Scott version). Or sometimes "Goodnight and joy be with you all" (what "The Parting Glass" was plagiarized from). |
