Jonathan (Jonny) Mohun was hosting them on his Mega account for a while but I don't think that they are there any more. I do have them locally but no easy way to upload them or share them as my internet connectivity is a bit crippled at the moment :( . Maybe Jonny could re-load them, I'm not sure; otherwise someone else who downloaded them could do the same for Guest Jack ??

If there are folk out there still searching for this, I recorded all 5 episodes to video tape off our local TV station in Australia back in 91 or so - picture quality quite reasonable, audio should be very good - and later burned to DVD for my own holdings. I could make .avi files (around 1 GB per episode) from these but do not really have a good way to share them (since they are a commercial show I do not really want to put them on YouTube, although others do not seem to have the same scruples...). One option would be to use a file sending service such as WeTransfer and send them to someone who has a spare 5GB of web accessible server space for hosting - any takers? Would take me at least a few days to prepare the files, though - although perhaps not too bad given that this particular thread was started in 2004...

However beware, the copyright police might come knocking.

I have copies of the Audio tapes and the Book of the series, and at one time I had VHS copies of all the programmes, taken from the TV show in the UK. However, the VHS tapes are long gone - I think!!

Come West Along the Road did a selection from the series during the last season. That may still be up on the RTE player.

The CD (as well as the lp) turns up on ebay more or lessregularly.

I have four of the five episodes on VHS (the missus accidentally recorded over the final episode), recorded straight from the telly, which I can no longer view. The recording quality of my cheapo Panasonic gear was not exactly out of this world. I also have the three-disc vinyl set which I can no longer play. The records don't exactly match what was on the programmes, for example there is no Christy Moore on the records. Something to do with contracts or copyright or something. I'm not going to part with any of my stuff but one day soon I'll work on getting it all digitised (is that a word?)

Found this thread while searching for a copy of 'Bringing it all back home'. I still have the cassettes from the early 90's and am really hoping to find the complete 5 part series on DVD or any medium. None of the sources on Amazon has it. I would appreciate any info or leads. Thanks.

Further to Nick's post on this, I (and I suspect most folks) can handle either PAL or NTSC DVDs/tapes, as well as any old region... but the key lies with the kind soul who has a copy of the series and is okay about doing some sort of trade/deal/whatever. The commercially available DVD/VHS/CD/MC copies of some of the performances are okay, but a long way short of the whole thing.

Just to keep this one active...

although PAL vhs tapes will not usually play on US machines with NTSC there are some multiregion vcrs out there - Samsung did one - but the expense is not practical (pay your local tape transfer company!).

I've done PAL vhs to dvd transfers - PAL dvds will usually play on American computers but may not play on tv dvd players depending on age and functionality. Converting the NTSC (or reverse) in that transfer process is usually fine but does create a slightly jerky movement due to the frame handling. A similar effect happens converting PAL/NTSC vhs using something like the Samsung.

The really important thing with dvd is the region code (US is 1, UK and similar 2). Home burned ones should be region 0 (ie region free).

Does anybody have a copy of the whole 1991 series (ie the 5 x 60min programmes that went out in the UK and Ireland on BBC & RTE television) that they can make available for trade. DVD would be brilliant, but decent VHS tape copies would of course do.

To return to the content of the DVD rather than technicalities, my reading of the amazon site is that it is a "selection" from the series rather than complete.

I'd rather wait for a complete series edition but I guess that licensing issues and permission from performers may well be a problem. I guess the current DVD is only those parts where thse issues were easily resolved.

I do have a rather tatty VHS tape of the series taped from air somewhere which I must look at again sometime.

Works well for me and very reasonably priced for a 'known' brand (Deawoo) you have to type in a code to get it to change regions but it means I can get DVDs from the US. Which means I can buy from Amazon.com. Some older titles titles are hard to find in the UK so this works well for me. I have not had a problem with PAL/NTSC using this method, the TV seems to pick up the signal fine without any adjustments, if the correct region is set on the DVD player. I suppose for a US buyer the voltage on the unit and the scart plugs might be a problem though.

PAL and NTSC are standards for different countries. They are incompatible. Basically, PAL has 625 lines of resolution and NTSC has 525.

As Geoff said, there are players in the UK that will play both, but they are not as readily available in the U.S. There are issues with conversions that contribute to that, and the few mult-standard decks that are availabe in the U.S. are very expensive.

I'm honestly not sure about computers. Your program that plays DVD's in the computer might be able to give you the answer.

PAL and NSC are both formats for specific TV broadcast and receiving equipment. In the UK we use PAL, which has a higher number of lines making up the picture than is used with NTSC, the American standard. Over here, we can currently buy VCR players which will display both PAL and NTSC videos on our PAL television sets. I don't know the details, as I don't have one of them. I also do not know whether one would display a PAL video on a NTSC television set, or whether it is just so that we can watch tapes imported from the USA. That said - the equipment is probably made in Japan, so may be designed to convert both ways.
My old computer was a Commodore Amiga, which used a TV as default monitor, and could be set to use PAL or NTSC for its display.

Yes, I was afraid of this... a friend told me that it may not be available in any format that can played in the US. I'm not sure what PAL or NTSC is but I assume that PAL is a European standard that won't work in a US DVD player? How about in a computer?

"The review" - you can guarantee that anything is going to get at least one crappy review, very often masses of crappy reviews, regardless of whether it's good or not. It's much easier to write an entertaining knocking review. And of course it is highly unlikely that any paper would have a programme about any kind of folk muisc reviewed by anyone who knew the first thing about it.

It was a pretty good series, with some great music included.

try the above link to order the DVD through the Amazon website. I've got the CD's somewhere there are some cracking tracks on them. I remember turning on the telly when it was first broadcast just catch the last song and then the credits. I had just thought "That was good, I'll have to watch next weeks episode." when the presenter piped up and says "That was the last in the series of bringing it all back home..." AAARRRRGH! still have yet to order a copy for myself maybe a nudge in the right direction to the missus for me birthday.

In 1991 there was a BBC / RTE five part documentary film series about the journey, influence and development of Irish music called Bringing it all Back Home. There is an accompanying book by the same title by Nuala O'Connor that is quite good, but I would love to see the documentary. Anyone know a source for this?
