Subject: BS: Should I be flattered?
From: Lepus Rex
Date: 21 Jan 04 - 07:00 AM

Alright. What the fuck?

Let's start from the beginning. Well, not the real beginning, but the beginning of what prompted this thread: A couple of months ago, I ran across an unusual post. Harpgirl, who I understand isn't terribly fond of me, had accused me of anonymously atacking Peg. The accusation was bullshit, but since the accusation was already a month or so old by the time I got around to reading it, and since I was in a pretty good mood at the time, I chose to ignore it. End chapter one.

Fast forward to the present. I haven't had much time to follow or post to any threads since... September, due to a lovely vacation, the un-lovely death of a loved one, and a general boredom with the predictability of internet forums, among other reasons that are none of your fucking business. :) I lurk a bit, but I've only been checking in maybe twice a month.

But then, this morning, I read a post by Shambles, which referenced and linked to a "witch hunt" thread, "Forums/Discussion Groups ," in which not only Harpgirl, but Big Mick as well, accused me of being some sort of master über-troll. They also linked me with Big Mick's perennial bogeyman/probable paranoid delusion, Janet Ryan/WAMSO/Matriot. Like me, a Minnesotan, and no-one I know, as far as I know. "Huh," I thought, "what the fuck?"

So I dug a little deeper. A few anon. GUEST posts attacking me in a similar way, and another accusation from harpgirl on the "BS: JFK may have saved the world?" thread. She even labelled me the "mischievious Minnesota miscreant." Ouch! That same day, she started a recipe thread called "BS: Recipes for the Crockpot: Iron Ore Stew, which she apparently dedicated to me, for some reason. Ah, I get it. Taconite. Ehh...

So, chapter three: The future.

Now, like I said, I was willing to overlook the libel in September. Water off a duck's back an' shit. But I'm going to have to ask you, Harpgirl and Big Mick, to keep your defamatory, paranoid-ass accusations to yourselves. I don't need to delete my cookie to be an asshole. I didn't when I posted "I hate America" right after 9/11, I didn't when I said "fuck the troops" last spring, and I sure as fuck didn't to post this, did I?

But I'm really not interesting in changing your opinions of me. I can count on one hand the people whose opinions of me actually matter, and neither of you is one of those people. Continue to stalk me and any other... evildoers you can dream up. Whisper your nutty little conspiracy theories to each other. Knock yourselves out. But continue to defame me publicly, and... well, I dunno. I'll dislike you even more?

No, wait. Forget I said that. I'm easy to get along with. If it'll make you guys feel better, fine, I'll admit it: It's all totally fucking true. I sit here, 24 hours a day, dreaming up new ways to attack you. I quit my job and everything. But you... you clever things have foiled my evil plans! I surrender! What was I thinking, going against the mighty Big Mick and his feisty sidekick, Harpgirl, the bestest internet detectives in the whole wide world?

So... can you shut the fuck up, now?

Seems to me, that if as he says he is not guilty of the accusations made. Then he's got every right to be pi$$ed off.
I also find it suspicious that 2 out of the three responses so far are from people employing aliases.

I tried to say this earlier, but no one listened. SILLY SEASON is here, early, and nothing makes sense in silly season, but the pattern of behavior year after year is, we all try to MAKE it make sense, till we get back to our senses.

Can't we leave it at that and have a good time?

Here we have a perfect opportunity to start a new story thread about Mick and harpy (and her alter ego Harpmaker/Harpy). Go for it!

Ya know what we need-- Mudcat flash cartoons. Just think of it! A place to let all the song challenge songs and parodies come to life-- weird life at that!

Weird deal. I guess you could try being flattered. You sound like you've just been tickled to the point where it's not very funny anymore. My cousin used to do that to me when I was a kid--it starts to get a little nauseating, I remember.

Hold it, folks. Lepus is right to be offended. I did accuse him incorrectly, and I find it necessary to apologize publicly. LR, I made a mistake.

You are not blameless in this. Your history of inflammatory posts certainly contributes to a reputation, but you generally do identify yourself. I am sorry for casting aspersions on you, however.

By the way, LR, I am not paranoid or delusionary about your intent, or WAMSO/Matriot's intent. The record is pretty clear. For whatever reason, you both have an axe to grind here. I wish that were not so, but clearly it is. I don't even have a problem with that, per se, but when anyone assumes several identities, answers their own questions, and attempts to draw unsuspecting folks into the argument so the original poster can get their kicks by spreading dissension, I do feel compelled to jump in. This has been WAMSO/Matriot's tactic, as well as several others. As best as I can tell, it has not been yours. Generally, you have come at it straight up. That is your right, and at least one knows when they are dealing with you.

I made a mistake, and I apologize. I hope you will accept it.

I am very sorry to hear about the tragedy in the loss of a loved one. I lost a beloved cousin recently, and the pain is tough to deal with at times.

Mick

I never understand how it is people can ever feel so confident about who it is posting as a nameless, or with a pseudonym, that they come out and finger anyone.

I mean, even with named members, you can never know for sure who is sitting at the computer.

So long as there is any doubt, giving people the benefit of it is a pretty good policy.

Hmm. Well, Mick, I'll gladly accept your latest apology, and thank you for your condolences (you have mine, as well). But I'll have to disagree with you that I'm "not blameless in this." I most certainly am blameless in this. I have no history of using multiple identities, or of posting anonymously. (Wait, that's a lie. Once, and only once, I did delete my cookie to post anonymously. In the spring of 2000, in my first weeks here, I deleted my cookie to refresh a thread. I wasn't quite comfortable here yet, and I felt "funny" refreshing a thread that I wasn't contributing to. Silly in retrospect, but true. Believe it or blow me.) I don't start troll threads. In fact, this is only the second or third thread I've started in four years. These accusations were completely groundless and, I believe, pretty fucking paranoid. If you have proof, or even evidence, to the contrary, I'd truly love to see it.

And I have no "axe to grind" with you, Harpgirl, or anybody else here. If I recall correctly, most of my clashes with you (and Harpgirl) have been over what I see as your poor treatment of GUESTs. If I were a GUEST, and my first thread was greeted with cryptic, off-topic shit like "The Larrivee is playing wonderfully. And I payed for it in full," followed by accusations that I was a troll in disguise and you're on to me, dammit, I probably wouldn't stick around. Would you? The Mudcat can be a mean place for GUESTs, who are of course potential new members, and I hate to see these people driven off or, worse, marginalised to the point that they actually do become angry and bitter trolls.

I hope that you realise that your position here, both officially and socially, gives you a lot of power. People trust you, and many members will take your words as fact. Given your position, and that your "detective work" seems to be based entirely on guesswork, and that you admit these accusations against me were completely unfounded, I believe that your participation in these "witch hunts" is particularly irresponsible. Unfortunately, few members seem willing to stand up to you and the rest in defense of GUESTs, so I feel that I must. Sorry, but you'll have to get used to it if you're going to "hunt."

And Harpgirl, if you wanted to know my birth name, all you had to do was ask. I mean, you must have spent hours scouring my old posts for that info, which is far from secret. Look hard enough around here and you'll probably find my birth date, my mom's maiden name, and maybe even my pants size. And if you're a really devoted stalker, both my address AND my phone number are listed in the phone book. Think about it: Doesn't the fact that you've spent who knows how many hours stalking me seem at least a little bit creepy to you? I mean, know I'm pretty and all, but I just don't understand your obsession with me... What's it all about?

Oh, and for a few of the others:

GUEST,Jim Knowledge: I had to read it three times to get it, but that's pretty funny.
GUEST,Hugh Jampton: "Leperous Rex." Original shit, dude. And no, I don't watch too many gangster movies. I write like I talk, in a flat midwestern monotone sprinkled liberally with profanity. You watch too much American TV... We're not all from New York.
Rapaire: I brought it up because claims were made about me in my absence, which is pretty fucking annoying. If someone is going to attack me, I'd like it to be accurate, and preferably in my presence.
WYSIWYG: Uhhh... Whaaa?
CarolC: Thank you. :)

As I said, when you post, Lepus, you are straight forward and don't hide. I was wrong to suggest anything to the contrary, and I apologize for that.

As to your attitude about the place, I accept that you feel you have reason. I don't agree that you are blameless in how you are received here, but you and I will just have to disagree on that.

For what it is worth, Harpgirl and I do not collaborate on anything. Any problems between you and her are just that... between you and her.

As to the actions I take against those that attempt to injure this place, or bully others anonymously, that will not change. I have no problems with nameless guests and have said so on a number of occasions. It is only when folks use the anonymity to wreak havoc that I take exception and act. In your case, I made a mistake and now I have said so publicly. My apology to you is sincere and without condition. You have been wronged, I am the culprit, and I apologize. I will leave it at that.

Lepus ... why don't you and I develope a dialogue. Help me to try and understand why anyone should be allowed to operate under a veil and disrupt a decent place. My email address is micklane@charter.net, and you know how to PM me. Perhaps we can turn this shit into something positive. Waddya say?

You did a great job and passed some time and not only did it not cost you anything, you didn't wind up in jail either!! Pretty good day huh? Works for me!

THEN, as an added bonus you get all these replies and apology type stuff! You even got Garg in doung his do, whatever that is. BTW, harpy's first message of "I will if you will" made me think she was saying something along the lines of "I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours." Why not take her up on that? Here's the deal........I'll toss a few bucks your way if I can watch when y'all do that!!! I mean, I don't want to see yours as I have seen your pictures in the Mudcat Personals and they were bad enough. No, I just want to be there to check out harpy's, maybe take a few pix, cop a feel, whatever. Let me know when so I can get some good film huh?

From reading your posts I was pretty sure those other posts had nothing to do with you. I always have thought of you as a straight shooter. I was going to defend you as a matter of fact but I stay out of those conversations because they are sickening to me.
Being there are only three of us from MN that come here to my knowledge, I almost wondered if it was me being talked about on the crockpot thread. Glad it was you!

Today, while popping in for a brief lurk, it came to my attention that harpgirl is apparently off her fucking meds again. At least ten different posts accusing me of being not only Martin Gibson (a claim she's made in the past), but something called "Susu," as well as it's husband. Two threads (1) (2), in particular, were, well... interesting. I learned all kinds of shit about myself:

Did you all know that, even though I haven't set foot in a real high school since I was expelled from Columbia Heights High School some 13 years ago, I am now a high school teacher, and not a garment screen printer? Wow! Congrats, me! And turns out I'm not really a socialist, but some sort of... right-wing "hooligan?" Neat! And I HATE senior citizens! Take that, grandma! Ooh, ooh! And I've got a Jewish girlfriend! Her name's prob'ly Rachel or something. As a result of getting a Jewish girlfriend, I no longer oppose the existence of Israel as a Jewish state, but am now a committed Zionist! She's some gal, that Rachel...

But yanno, I didn't really even want to humiliate you over this, harpgirl. What was once "sad/annoying" has become merely "sad," and is quickly veering towards "tragic." I really pity your sorry ass, I do. I know you're still pissed that I singled you out for the karolina thing back in '03, and that I mocked you last year for making up crazy-ass lies about me. I know it hurts when I publicly humiliate you, but there's an excellent way for you to avoid it: See a shrink about your mad obsession with me, get well, and back the fuck off. You're not capable of hurting me, and you're not capable of defaming me. I'm smarter than you, and you're simply no fucking match. So, surrender, or lose.

Yeah, GUEST, she did predict my response, didn't she? Which makes it even more pitiful: Not only is she paranoid, but it's as if she has no ability to resist her urges to attack me... Nutty. She really does need some help.

And Rustic, yeah, it gets confusing for me, as well... Who will I be next? Will it be the nebulous Janet Ryan/WAMSO/Matriot, the most feared anonymous GUEST on the forum and a scourge to beefy Irish men everywhere? Or will I become a seemingly kindly newcomer with poor English skills, just waiting to take advantage of your hospitality? Or will I suddenly get a craving for a kosher Hot Carl, Chicago-style? You never do know, and, sadly, neither do I. My life is Hell.

My god Lepus, harpgirl has truly gone down hill! I rarely encounter her anymore though. What rock does she keep crawling out from underneath these days?

The real irony is, when she first started going after the two of us (on her good days, she apparently thinks we are one and the same, but on her bad days, she believes we have morphed into the many phantoms haunting her days here), she claimed to be a psychologist or social worker, wasn't it? What I can't figure out is why she hasn't yet accused Rustic of being Martin Gibson yet, seeing as she too is from MN.

Sad and pathetic, like so many of the other MC members who are obsessed with "exposing" us unidentifiable MN posters. Why, just today brucie threateningly told me I "wouldn't remain nameless for long".

Apparently Georgiansilver, you haven't been around these parts for very long.

While reading over this confusing exchange of accusations, I was most amused by the contention that harpgirl is in fact a male individual named Abby. This may have had something to with confusing her with the British male harpmaker, but I don't think so.

As far as I know, her name is Abby, but she seems to be female (at least based upon the pictures she has posted here). I only wish that more babble had been posted about the supposed gender confusion. I need all the laughs I can get!

PoppaGator, there is a frequent poster here at Mudcat by the name of Abby Sale, who is also from Florida, where harpgirl lives. Since I have no clue what you are talking about, I have no idea if someone got Abby and harpgirl confused or not. More likely poor Abby got caught in the comedic crossfire of "suggestions" that since both harpgirl and Abby are from Florida, that they must be the same person (this is the logic harpgirl was using in her attempt to "out" Lepus Rex as me, since we are both from MN).

Abby actually knows a great deal about folk music, contributes the excellent "Happy" threads to the music section, etc. while harpgirl...well. She is just absolutely certain that I Am the Walrus, if you catch my drift.

What you are actually witnessing is something that seems to be dying out here at Mudcat: a very long term obsession certain members of the Mudcat community (some of whom are even named in this thread!) have for trying to "out" the identity of anonymous posters they don't like, or with whom they disagree politically, have tangled with in a nasty flame war in the past and are still holding a grudge about, that sort of thing. Highly amusing form of entertainment though it can be watch to watch folks antagonize the people so obsessed, most of us have learned to let those sleeping dogs lie, as Lepus Rex just pointed out.

Hey Lepus--I escaped the cold, but my kids both got it. Now then, what happened to Rustic?

Abby lives in Orlando near me and is a nice, pleasant man who would rather say nothing that to lambast someone. Not to say anything about/against Harpgirl, but the Abby I know wouldn't engage in such discussions as has Harpgirl.

Have not, harpgirl, and will not. Likewise, I wouldn't deny it if you claimed that I was a woman, a German spy, a dentist, a serial rapist, or an unusually clever penguin named Richard. It's a ridiculous, baseless claim, and I thus feel no need to dignify it with a refutal.

What exactly is it you're trying to accomplish? I mean, the people you're trying to convince with your lies fall in to two main categories: Those who don't give a shit (the vast majority), and those who know you're wrong. You haven't damaged my image, such as it is, and you haven't really even angered me. All you've accomplished so far is to publicly humiliate yourself once again, and to bring me back from the non-posting dead. Was that really what you wanted?
