Ooops, twitchy trigger finger.

I'll be in NZ from early March up to (not including) Easter, based in Hamilton. What happens there or thereabouts that would interest mudcatters? Any folk clubs etc.?

Ahoy>! Sorry , I don't know about the NZ folk scene but in March/april there ar about 17 folk fests in Australia (including the National), If you were thinking of hopping over have a look at this site http://www.folkalliance.org.au/AFD_Directory.cfm    (I don't know how to make it all blue and clicky).   Do you come from Finland, or are you just a Sibelius fan??, Know anything about the Kaustinen fest? (I'm asking this everywhere).

Thanks Moocowpoo. It's unlikely I'll be able to get over to Oz this trip, but you never know. I've been to Port Fairy festival, but that was ten years ago.

Not from Finland; it's just a silly moniker. I'm thinking of ditching it.

Sibelius

You have just missed the Auckland Folk Festival which took place this last weekend. The next event on the calendar is not till Easter.!
You would do better to travel up to Auckland and go to the Dogs Bollix pub on a Tuesday evening, or the Devonport Folk Club (voted the best folk club in the world) on the top of Mount Victoria, every Monday night. Take it from me, there is nothing that goes on in Hamilton.

Doc

Jack is in Hamilton. I'm sure there's something happening but not a festival.
You've just missed the best one - I still haven't caught up with sleep.
The Saturday night session started at 11pm and we didn't get to bed until 4am Sunday. Then after the final concert the music continued until after 3am Monday (that's when I crashed) and then later on it took until 11pm Monday night to drive home. But it was all worth it.
Good to see ya Gurney!
Cheers,
Robyn

Thanks Doc,

I should have opportunities to get up to Auckland while I'm in the country, so I'll look out those two pubs - thanks for the advice.

Nothing going on in Hamilton, eh? Well, maybe we'll just have to start something!

Wellington FC was a monthly affair in 2000 and not the weeks I was in Paraparamumu. There are things going-on in the Hutt valley and Johnsonville (ish). Irish pubs in Wellington are worth an ask (normal speech in Kiwish). Levin is monthly and was still going in 2000, in 1995 it was buzzin and very inclusive.   Hamilton has (had) a monthly affair but it seemed to be in a private house. There were monthly things in Hawkes Bay, I did find a site that listed a lot of things, it was a link/subpage of a site with a name like musicNZ or NZmusic.
I could give you contact names but as they don't answer e-mails I am not sure if they are ignoring them or no longer there.

I gather Eliza Carthy is appearing at the Wellington Arts Festival (or something) around March 11th-ish. So seems like there are a few things to go at. I was hoping for something a little more participative - an Irish session or two would be good - but concerts will fill the void if nothing else. Thanks for the advice.

If you're coming to Hawke's Bay, we meet every Wednesday evening at the Cat & Fiddle for some Celtic Jam. Visitors are welcome to participate with tunes or songs and we've been known to play anything from Happy Birthday and Danny Boy through to fast jigs and reels or the occasional Pogues song.

Gidday Sibelius, I guess Hamilton is not the jumpingest folk scene in NZ but it is there.

First Sunday of the month sees a pub session a little out of town. Third sunday of the month is a pub session at Biddy Mulligan's in town.

The Hamilton Accoustic club is the first monday (or is it wednesday?) of the month in the back bar of the forementioned Biddy Mulligan's.

From time to time some of us get together and trade a few songs

Are you an listener or a performer?

Join mudcat and pm me, I'm sure we can find or arrange some diversion for you
