Subject: Lyr Add: FABULON (partial)
From: Benjamin Bodhra/nai/
Date: 29 Sep 98 - 04:07 AM

Buy a litre of Fabulon,
Dare we spray down,
In the scorched trail,
Of our Sunbeam Iron.

And paint your face with Revlon
To hide the frown
In the blue-blown glare
Of your Rank Television

And carry it away from Myers now
Requiring a bus alone
How can we live without these things in Cammeray
An electric toothbrush for your mouth
Roche medication for your heart
You'll be living in the locked up life in your sauna

(two lines I can't remeber)
And in the valley of silicon
Where we may drown,
And there we leapt into blind oblivion

And carry it away from Tandy's now
A computer of your own
How can we live without a VDU and a live program
(Another line gone)
A pair of ADIDAS for your feet
You'll be living to the locked up life of your wardrobe

1st verse again

Harpic Blue

John Schumann is running in the next electorate to me in the Aust. Fedral Election. Maybe I should go and bug him.

This was all done from quick memory, maybe it will jog someone else's. I'll try to listen to what tapes I can find and transcribe a few.

BB

It'samazing what you miss when you don't check the threads for a week! I just got their "Caught in the act CD" sent over from Oz; cheap compared to UK prices. I wanted the lyrics & tune to Only 19, but most of their best known songs are on there; Gregs wmusic store http://www.musicworld.com.au/. I got the words & chords to only 19 at

http://www.nobbys.net.au/~ozmc/ozbands/oztabs3/only19.txt

Finding this has been one of the high points of getting stuff off the net; I got so much help! Jonathan

An historical note. Further to Benjamin's thread above - John Schumann came within a trice of defeating Australia's Foreign Minister for the seat in the recent Australian Federal election. Although the counting of votes finishes in the next couple of days, it appears as though John has missed out by about 200 or so votes in scoring a significant political boil-over.

Regards
John

The Last Frontier

"Gladstone Pier"

And you might like this link . I think it's funny but some people may take offence. I'm providing the link as a gentle joke, and not with any nasty intentions. :-)

Ok, so I seem to have killed the thread with my third link. Mea culpa, and all that, but that link was in the New Scientist magazine in their humourous section at the end. I thought it was funny.

The point that I, and the owners of that website, want to make is that it is so easy to find what you want by looking it up in Google.com

To find the two song lyrics I used these search terms:

Redgum "last frontier"

Redgum "gladstone pier"

Hint: use double quotes around the words you want to appear together in that order, i.e. you don't want an article about how to rebuild a house pier written by someone in Gladstone, Queensland. You do want an article which has the words Gladstone Pier next to each other in that order.

A search using:    gladstone pier

gives 99,500 hits but

A search using:    "gladstone pier"

gives 64 hits - which is a lot easier to wade through.

Hint 2: if you don't find what you want first go, think of another set of search terms. If you want to narrow down the search because you got a million or so hits, add another word to the search box. Think laterally. Is there another word which you could use instead of the first one you thought of?

Hint 3: if you are looking for the name of a song or the rest of the lyrics try picking out some unusual bits of the song that are distinctive. The hardest things to find are the ones with very common words like "and" "the" or any of the thousands of common words we use in everything we say and write. Try searching for information about the band called "The Cure" for instance. Google ignores "the" even in the double quotes. You have to add something distinctive to narrow it down to the band.

For example:

Gladstone Pier

He was a sailor
Swarthy lean and proud
He could take a schooner through a big sea swell
Aloof in the mainland crowd

In this song I would start by choosing:

"swarthy lean and proud"

or even just the three words separately:

swarthy lean proud

but that gives 8,960 hits which you would then have to narrow down.

By adding the word Redgum it brings up one page with the lyrics.

So, sorry if I was offensive.

Helen

Nope, not offensive, Helen. I have already copied the "blackboard" to my picture file. I thought it was funny, and your description of search methods appropriate.

I always regard myself as a first class thread killer. Part of that is that I usually run onto something when it has nearly run its course, so most of what is going to be said has already been said.

Incidentally, I think their Diamantina Drover is a first rate song. I have heard it by Lee Kernaghan, John Williamson, and most recently Redgum themselves. All are excellent, but I think I prefer LK's version ~~ it was the first I heard, and you know how that first version of a good song seems to stick with you.

G'day Helen,

It's worth plugging the extra virtues of doing an "Advanced Search" in Google. By using:

with all of the words                song lyrics
with the exact phrase               Gladstone Pier"
with at least one of the words   redgum
without the words

I narrowed the choice to only 13 hits.

The ability to assign these values makes any search engine very powerful (if not as much fun as wandering across the Delta bottom with Mudcat!).

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Dale, I'm glad you're not offended.

I'm a first-class threadkiller too. In fact I've killed a couple of other threads in the last few days. Don't ask me how I do it, but I do.

Bob, good advice about the Advanced Search. I just find Google so damned clever that most of the time I don't use the AS. I should though. Problem is I'm an info-nut so I just enjoy the search sometimes. I find some interesting sites while on the hunt for other things.

Helen

Shake me, wake me, tell me it's a dream
I've got a B-52 on my TV screen
And a man in a tie
Pointing to the sky
Where ya gonna run to now

(... when was that written...???)
