Subject: Wotcha Visiting London From: Wotcha Date: 05 Feb 04 - 11:55 AM I should be in London fromb about 13 Feb thru about 16 Feb if I can figure out whether I am flying from Italy or Germany that weekend ... Any sea chantey-friendly singaround sessions going on? Will be in Central London but would like to visit old stomping grounds in N. London (Harrow). Cheers, Brian |
Subject: RE: Wotcha Visiting London From: Leadfingers Date: 05 Feb 04 - 12:06 PM I'll get in before Breezy and remind you that Herga is on Monday evening at the Royal Oak Peel Road Wealdstone - A Folk Club Not a session, but definately Shanty friendly. I will be Ooop North that weekend so wont be around. |

Subject: RE: Wotcha Visiting London From: Wotcha Date: 06 Feb 04 - 12:26 PM Ta very much ... can't make Monday, since I will be back in the air off to Naples (and maybe collecting shanties from the fishermen at Pozzouli) ... Saturday night I may toddle over to Greenwich to check out the pub showcased on the Mudcat links section. Herga Court used to be a small residential enclave on Harrow-on-the-Hill ... any connection to Herga Kitty? Cheers, Brian |
Subject: RE: Wotcha Visiting London From: Herga Kitty Date: 06 Feb 04 - 02:18 PM Wotcha "Herga" was apparently an ancient name for Harrow. Herga Court is at the top of the hill, off Sudbury Hill, Herga Road is in Wealdstone, a few roads south of Peel Road, where the Herga folk club has met for the last 41 years. I live at the bottom of the hill, and the Herga folk club was the first folk club I ever went to (though I was living in Stanmore at the time). There was (probably still is) a Herga tennis club too. Sorry you can't make it to the club - hope you enjoy your trip anyway. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Wotcha Visiting London From: GUEST,Wotcha Date: 07 Feb 04 - 12:15 PM Kitty, Thanks for the info on Herga: always learning something on Mudcat. I attended Orley Farm School (named after Anthony Trollope's novel) when they had boarders back in the 60s and early 70s ... My folks used to live at the foot of the Harrow School playing fields and school farm where you could feed their 2 donkeys if you got close enough. Took my son around the area last summer and couldn't resist showing him why a Wimpy burger is almost as memorable as a White Castle ... Do the locals still call the little park by The Parade "the Pimple"? Will probably attend the Court Sessions on Saturday night and maybe even the Cellar Upstairs event on Sunday. Ciao Brian |
Subject: RE: Wotcha Visiting London From: Herga Kitty Date: 07 Feb 04 - 02:58 PM Orley Farm School is still going. Trollope, of course, was a pupil at Harrow School for a while. I don't know about the Pimple though. I defected from the Herga club for a few years in the late 80's to sing with the Stanmore Choral Society, and the then headmaster of Orley Farm was also a member (the choirs in Harrow - Harrow Choral Society, Harrow Philharmonic Society and SCS - all met on Mondays, which unfortunately is the same night as the folk club). |
Subject: RE: Wotcha Visiting London From: GUEST,Wotcha in Italia Date: 17 Feb 04 - 02:42 PM Well, back in Naples for maybe another couple of weeks it seems. London was great -- grey, cold, and even a little rain to remind me why it is a great place to visit ... Got to sing at the Singer's Night hosted by the Court Sessions folks by the St Boniface Social Club in Tooting Bec (apparently where A.L. Lloyd was born ... or so says Dave the holder of all knowledge). A super friendly (but this week) small folk crowd with variety of traditions and styles. They really liked the sea chanteys though ... may have to go back. Cheers/Ciao! Brian |
