I heard a small part of this song, almost a year ago, sung by an English singer. The only words I remembered were "sweet jane" and "trunk" ... and I finally found the lyrics to "Farewell Sweet Jane" on this site, which I hope is the song I am looking for. Can anyone help me to find a recording of this song? Maybe even a Lisa Null version, as the singer in question mentioned her in connection with this song?

The NLCR's recording is a truncated version of the song given as 'Sweet Jane' in the DT, with significantly different lyrics. It is an unaccompanied solo performance by Tracy Schwarz. The notes to the Smithsonian/Folkways CD indicate the Ramblers source was Aunt Molly Jackson, Library of Congress Archive of Folksong No 2573 B2 recorded in 1939 in NYC by Alan Lomax with 2 verses from 'Johnson's Boat', The Lewis Watson Chapel Archives, The West Virginia and History Collection at West Virginian Uni, sung by Sarah Workman in 1940.

Chris Wood got this song from the singing of Lisa Null and his version, under the title Sweet Jayne on the CD Knock John (RUFCD08) with Andy Cutting is awesome.

These are the lyrics Chris uses :

What I would actually like to get hold of the Lisa Null version. The "English singer" I referred to is actually Chris Wood himself, who we were lucky enough to have as a workshop tutor a couple of years ago - so thanks for those lyrics. Part of the reason I came to this list was that I got nowhere trying to find a Lisa Null recording of this song - any ideas?

Lisa Null recorded it on "Feathered Maiden," (Innisfree/Green Linnet 1006) which is long out of print. The good news is that there are plans afoot to convert her recordings into CDs, probably overseen by Sandy Paton and Folk Legacy Recordings, since he was the original sound engineer.

OK, this thread is at least 8 years old so probably no one looking. However, just in case, there is a nice recording of Farewell Sweet Jane by a duo called Sandy and Jeanie on an eponymous vinyl LP recorded in the late 70's.

It is Jeanie singing unaccompanied on this track. Jeanie, as far as I know, now resides in New Mexico and is in another duo called Bayou Seco.

So I'm back here looking for sheet music or just a chord sequence for Farewell Sweet Jane. Amazed to see your response just a couple of weeks ago. I just listened to the Sandy & Jeanie version which I have on vinyl and want to introduce the song to the band I play in, but all the versions I've heard are acapella.

FYI I heard Sandy and Jeanie in a Liverpool club in about 1966 and bought their LP.

A version of this song can be heard on the forthcoming double CD set "When Cecil Left the Mountains" which will be issued lated this month by Musical Traditions. The song is sung by Mrs Clyde Sturgill who was recorded in 1938 at the Whitetop Festival in Virginia.

WOW more information. I found a copy of the Knock John CD on ebay but Sweet Jayne does not appear to be on the track listing. So I guess there's no recording of this - just YouTube? Thanks again
